Message from the Principal,
It is hard to believe that the first quarter of the 2016-2017 school
year has come and gone. I hope you were able to join us at
Parent/Teacher Conferences. If you were unable to attend log in
to ParentVue to review your child’s grades.
Each school year we schedule three activity nights for students to
have fun socializing with their peers. Activity night activities in-
clude: dodge ball, ping pong, basketball, volleyball, swimming,
video games, movie and a concession stand. We supervise each
activity night by using Frontier Trail staff. We can always use
additional help. Please look at your calendars and let us know if
you can help on Friday, November 4 from 3:30-5:00 p.m. Parents
have asked if there are ways they can volunteer and help at Fron-
tier Trail. This is an excellent way to get involved. Please email
Scott Appell at or Dr. Smith at [email protected] or
[email protected] if you want to volunteer.
As students move through the middle school years, things can get
complicated. Balancing schoolwork with outside activities is a
challenge for each student new to middle school. Your child’s
social growth and desire for independence and privacy put a pre-
mium on the time you have with them. As a middle school princi-
pal, I see the choices and behaviors that students face every day
regarding academic, physical growth, time management and so-
cial relationships. Our students need guidance more than ever in
making decisions yet they want and need opportunities to develop
appropriate levels of independence. For parents this requires a
fine line between over-protection and too little support. Parents
are their advocates, yet they must learn self-advocacy skills. Stu-
dents need help and support finding solutions to their problems
from their parents and school staff. They also need freedom to
learn from their mistakes while still having you close to support
them even when it sometimes involves consequences. It is not
easy and often frustrating but having you as the “guide on the
side” pays dividends. Please continue to share special times with
your child throughout this year knowing they need your support
regardless if they tell you they need it.
Educationally Yours,
Dr. Smith

The William Allen White Award is our state book award. What makes our state award unique is
that students do the voting. To be eligible to vote, students must read two books off the list. Students
will hear about the books during the month of November in their language arts classes. Encourage
your child to read from the list and be ready to vote at the end of March. To access the list go to:
http://www.emporia.edu/libsv/wawbookaward/.
Reading Seminar classes hear book talks once a month. This month featured some of the new
titles we were able to get from the Scholastic Book Fair. We were able to get over $500 in books from
our Fall Book Fair.
Box Tops have been steadily coming in. Our October Jag Time contest brought in over $200. As
the holidays approach, be on the lookout for the BoxTops symbols on products you usually buy, cut
them out and send them to school. This is a no-cost fundraiser for the library. Extra money earned
goes for materials for the library.

New Middle School Counseling Curriculum
Who says counselors aren’t teachers? FT counselors have been con-
ducting lessons with all grade levels of students throughout this first
semester. Topics include career awareness and preparation, traits of a
successful student, how to identify bullying behaviors… just to name a
few.
One of the most productive portions of these lessons is the discussion it
creates among students. They work through scenarios, discuss
situations they’ve seen, how best they can manage themselves, as well
as improve the environment around them. Thank you to Ms. Smith
and Ms. Colson for bringing sound instruction on problem solving and
collaboration to all FT students.
Food Drive for Johnson County Christmas Bureau
FT Leadership 1 classes are sponsoring a Canned Food
Drive and Stucco is doing a Coat Drive to benefit the Johnson
County Christmas Bureau. It will be held thru November 4.
The Johnson County Christmas Bureau provides food, clothing,
personal items and gifts for qualified low-income individuals
and families in Johnson County. This year, Frontier Trail
students and staff want to reach the goal of 2,500 food items
(2-3 cans per student) to be collected and donated to JCCB and
200 coats. Leadership 1 students will also have the opportunity
to take a field trip to the center and help with sorting on
December 1st 9:00 am to 12 pm. Food items that are especially
appreciated are soup, canned spaghetti, ravioli, peanut butter,
cake mixes, and boxed granola and breakfast bars. Please put
these dates on your calendar and pick up a few extra items at
the grocery store to donate.
Students and Parents, for FREE entrance into the
November 1st and November 3rd girls
basketball games, bring in TWO (2) canned food items per
person or a coat or jacket for each game!!

THE COLD WEATHER IS COMING!! As cold, stormy weather approaches, we want to remind you that the front office closes at 4:00 pm. Students who stay in the building after-hours need to make advanced arrangements for transportation in the event of inclement weather as the office phone may be unavailable. Our regular phone policy allows students to use the front office phone from 3:10 pm until 4:00 pm. Students in the building after that time will need to have made prior arrangements for pick up.

Please remember to help your child log their community service hours
into the Career Cruising Website. A flyer is attached explaining how to
complete this process. All 7th and 8
th graders have been show and have
started the process. 6th graders are beginning to be shown and will
know how to complete it by the end of November. Don’t feel you need
to wait. Just follow the instructions on the flyer. See your counselor for
any questions!
Direct Nurses line: 913 780-7212
September was screening month. Vision and hearing
screening was done with 8th graders.
Parents were notified only if your student failed a screening. Dental screening
was done for 7th and 8th grade students. Parents were given an opportunity to
have dental services provided through the school. Those parents who opted for
that will be contacted by the Health Partnership Clinic to set up an
appointment. Please call me for any questions.
6th grade students will be required to have an updated Tetanus shot as incoming
7th graders. Please keep this in mind when going to the doctor in the coming
months.
A new sports physical is due every school year after May 1. That physical is
good for any sport you do at school: football, volleyball, basketball, cheer, drill
and/or track. Lastly, please urge your child to eat breakfast or bring a breakfast
bar to school. Often children come to me mid-morning hungry.
