It’s hard to imagine beating the AZ heat

without air conditioning as we move from

cooled houses to cooled cars, jobs and

stores. Most of us take A/C for granted

(that is, until it’s not working!) Here are

five facts about A/C you may not know:

• The first A/C wasn’t invented for comfort.

In 1902, Willis Carrier designed this equip-

ment for a Brooklyn publishing company to

keep temperature and humidity low, thus pre-

venting paper expansion and contraction.

• Movie theaters became A/C’s trailblazers,

advertising, “Refrigerated Air.” Studios quickly

recognized a trend and began releasing their

blockbusters during

summer.

• Your kids should be

especially grateful

for A/C. While sum-

mer vacations began

for kids to escape the

heat and help with family obligations, schools

continued the tradition after getting A/C.

• Governments also shut down during the

summer heat, leading some historians to

blame federal bureaucracy growth on A/C as

our lawmakers stayed in session longer!

• And it wouldn’t be the same Vegas that we

know today. Before A/C, the Northeast was

our nation’s economic powerhouse. Popula-

tion explosions and job opportunities in

states such as AZ, NV, FL and TX are directly

attributed to the development of A/C.

“In these tough economic times, we need to

look out for each other so I’m sharing a quick

story that saved me over $6,000 this year!

Earlier this summer I had what I thought was

a reputable air conditioning and heating

company doing my preventive summer

maintenance. He told me I needed to replace

my A/C unit. I called a friend who

recommended Steve for a second opinion.

Steve came to fully inspect my unit, not

knowing what the other company had said.

Afterward, he said my unit was running great.

I then told Steve what the other company said.

He told me that I was his 4th customer in two

weeks who told him a similar story. Honesty

and integrity are difficult to find these days

and should be rewarded so I hope you’ll call

him with all your heating and cooling needs.”

Ceiling fans can make the temperature in an area feel

about 2° cooler. Remember to turn off the fans when

you aren’t in the room to save on your electricity bill.

Check your filters monthly by vacuuming, washing or

replacing. If you use disposable filters, we recommend

pleated filters. The greater surface area gathers more

dust and last roughly 2-3 months. These are also better

for the home’s air quality as well as your health.

For about $125 you can have a KickStart device installed

on your A/C unit. Units equipped with a KickStart use

less energy at start up and prolong the life of your

compressor.

Finally, schedule your annual A/C check-up in the

spring. Just like a regular medical exam, your check-up

doesn’t guarantee your unit will run perfectly throughout

the season. This is a preventative maintenance designed

to reveal small problems that could lead to major,

expensive problems if left unattended.

Sunny windows make air conditioners work 2-3 times

harder. Close shutters, blinds and drapes, especially on

south and southwest windows.

Invest in solar screens or outdoor shades to help block

much of the sun’s heat before it enters your home.

Set the thermostat to the desired setting only. Setting

your thermostat at 78° instead of 73° can save up to 20%

of your operating costs.

Setting your thermostat to a colder initial setting won’t

cool your home faster. This can actually cause

excessive cooling and unnecessary expense.

Plant trees or shrubs to shade outdoor units but don’t

block airflow to the units. A unit operating in the shade

uses up to 10% less electricity than if in sunlight.
