MOOCs The New EraProfessional Education serves as Georgia Techs production arm for massive open onlinecourses (MOOCs). Working collaboratively with other Georgia Tech units like the Centerfor 21st Century Universities (C21U), the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching andLearning (CETL), and the Council for Educational Technology (CET), we have quicklyadapted and scaled numerous programs for the MOOC format. With Georgia Tech coursescarrying nearly 10 percent of online education provider Courseras total MOOC enrollmentand the program having grown so much over the last year, Georgia Tech has built across-departmental team to support faculty in creating and delivering MOOCs. To further

support faculty in developing MOOCs, a satellite studio has opened in the Klaus AdvancedComputing Building. Centrally located on campus, the Klaus studio allows faculty toproduce MOOC content and experiment with new education delivery approaches. Thenew studio will act in tandem with Professional Educations main production complex forinteractive instructional media at the Georgia Tech Global Learning Center.

Changing the Face of English as aSecond Language (ESL) Instruction

Three faculty members of the Georgia Tech Language

Institute were awarded Georgia Techs 2013 CurriculumInnovation Award by the Center for Excellence in Teachingand Learning. Dr. Lauren Lukkarila, assistant director ofthe Language Institute, and lecturers Crystal Followill andKaren Peterson were recognized for improving the quality ofeducation at Georgia Tech through pedagogical and curricularinnovation. By restructuring ESL reading and writing curriculumat the advanced levels, the trio was able to enhance learnersreading comprehension, critical-thinking skills, and academicwriting abilities. Reading and writing courses, previously taughtseparately, were combined under the new curriculum. Thisgives students preparing to seek admission to U.S. universitiesthe opportunity to develop more advanced academic skills bysimulating the standard American task sequence of reading-discussion-writing. This innovative curricular change hasfar-reaching implications for English as a second languageinstruction, and the Language Institute is setting the standardfor the global learner.
