Why We’re Raising FundsDaegan is a 16-year-old boy living with a heart condition and additional health complications. He loves 80’s music and all things transportation. Daegan’s love for transportation encompasses trains, planes and buses. When asked what he’d wish for, he was keen to share his ideas! He wished to have the opportunity to fully enjoy all that a train has to offer. He envisioned taking a train and be able to eat, sleep and spend time touring the train. He would love everything from checking in, following the schedule, handing in his ticket and looking out the window. Having the opportunity to sleep on a train would be the icing on the cake.

All aboard! Daegan’s wish came true exactly how he envisioned. To start, he had the opportunity to experience multiple forms of transportation on his way to Vancouver. Daegan was picked up in a Limo and driven around town, stopping at McDonald’s before boarding the train from his home town to Toronto. In Toronto, Daegan was the first to board and explore “The Canadian” before it left for Vancouver. While on board, Daegan experienced every aspect of train life. He was “put to work” with various jobs such as opening the doors and making announcements. He enjoyed a variety of “train food,” slept on a train and even had a shower!

Daegan’s mother told Make-A-Wish®, “it isn’t about the destination for Daegan, it is about the journey.” Throughout his journey, Daegan made friends with all the Via Rail employees. When asked what was the best part, he said “everything.”

Although our travel wishes have been postponed, we continue to grant every possible wish that is safe to complete (with the proper social distancing measures), such as online shopping sprees, computer wishes, backyard playsets and trailer wishes. It is so heartwarming to see the families we are able to reach at this time, with your support.

In the following pages you will see details and results of last year’s calendar, and a snapshot of our plans for an even more exciting 2020 Calendar of Wishes.
