WWhheenn iiss BBiibbllee MMeemmoorryy EEffffeeccttiivvee?? Effort and time spent investing God’s Word in a child’s heart is always effort and time well spent. However, we suggest that Bible memory is most effective the plan addresses these three questions:

What Does that Mean? The first is comprehension or understanding.

Boys and girls have to “get” the meaning of the passages they are storing in their hearts. Without even a basic understanding of God’s intended meaning, it’s just a string of words; like memorizing the ingredients of mayonnaise.

What Does it Matter to Me? The moment that question is personally and meaningfully answered for the child, the words begin to become treasure. They move from words to the Words of life!

This is when life-changing Bible memory happens.“Give me understanding, and I will keep your law and

obey it with all my heart” (Psalm 119:34).

How Does that Verse Go Again? Long-term, even life-long recall of God’s Word is our ultimate dream for our children. While we have no absolute control over this, our chances increase when

the passages, pace, and program we present to our children are carefully considered and faithfully implemented.“. . . it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your

lips” (Proverbs 22:18).

“Great for churches, families,

day schools, home schools, and everywhere else boys and girls

around the world are becoming followers of Jesus Christ.”

TThhee IImmpprreessss KKiiddss AApppprrooaacchh The approach we recommend in this plan has been developed and tested for nearly 10 years. It helps children grasp the meaning and relevant life application of the passages. And long-term retention has been very encouraging. The Impress Kids’ Bible memory selections are mostly cohesive Scripture passages (i.e., a group of verses). We believe this approach allows children to interact with verses in the context of more complete ideas. We think this makes the verses more understandable, meaningful and memorable. The Impress Kids program presents twenty-four passages of Scripture over a six year period. Children in each grade, from 1st through 6th, are given four passages per year. Children focus on each passage for twelve to thirteen weeks, or one passage per quarter. We have observed this approach provides the necessary time for mastery, and for real-life situations to unfold, and consequently for real understanding and life application to be fixed in children’s minds. The standard approach to Bible memory selection is to assign children single isolated verses with a frequency of one or two new verses each week. This is a common model where the weekly Bible curriculum drives the pace and selection of verses. We’ve observed this usually results in short-term recall and shallow understanding of the verse and its relevant life applications. The Impress Kids’ twenty-four passages consist of eighty four verses. This is significantly fewer than many other programs. As mentioned above, we believe the measure of effective Bible memory is not greater volume, but understanding, application and long-term recall. Those who wish to assign or offer additional verses to children; we’ve carefully selected and listed companion passages with each main passage. This will allow your children to stay focused on the themes of the main selections.

PPaassssaaggee SSeelleeccttiioonnss Prayerful and diligent effort has been given in the selection and arrangement of the Impress Kids plan. Children’s spiritual needs relevant to age and normal correlated life experience have been considered, as well as children’s normal cognitive development. The scope and sequence of passages selected for this plan have been guided by the following biblical and practical considerations: Biblical Considerations – The apostle Paul loved Jesus Christ and His church. And we know that Paul wanted believers’ faith and lives to thrive. When John Tice sought to select passages for kid’s to invest in their hearts, he examined two of Paul’s recorded prayers for two specific churches; the believers in Ephesus and in Colossae. These passionate prayers are recorded in the Letter to the Ephesians and the Letter to the Colossians (Ephesians 1:15-19 and Colossians 1:9-11, respectively). John reasoned that Paul’s “prayer lists” for the new believers he loved would provide good structure for a Bible memory program for the young believers John loved (John was serving as a children’s pastor at the time). This is what resulted from that study:

1. A spirit of wisdom and understanding – Eph 1:17; Col 1:9 Include truths that impart spirit of wisdom and understanding. 2. Reveal the nature, character, will of God – Eph 1:17; Col 1:9,10 Promote truths that reveal who God is, what God is like, and what His will is. 3. Personal Salvation – Eph 1:18 Emphasize truths that clearly show how children can be saved, and ground children in the certainty of their salvation. Additionally, children will be equipped to share the offer of salvation with others. 4. Anticipate our future hope – Eph 1:18 Promote truths that stimulate children’s anticipation of Jesus’ return and eternity with God. 5. A growing faith and empowering relationship with God – Eph 1:19; Col 1:11 Choose truths that nurture mature faith and encourage a dependant empowering relationship with God. 6. God-worthy character and living – Col 1:10 Select truths that describe and encourage God-worthy character and living, with hearts intent on pleasing God, motivated by love for God and His calling on children’s lives. Also, where possible, the selections are Christ-centered. Jesus alone is the “radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being” (Hebrews 1:3). His purpose, among others, is to make the Father known (John 1:18). Therefore, Jesus Christ is emphasized in the Bible memory selections.

Practical Considerations – As a children’s Bible memory program, several practical considerations were applied. Children’s spiritual needs relevant to age and normal correlated life experience were considered. Passages have been selected and placed in sequence based upon children’s age-specific literacy and comprehension abilities. Whenever possible we chose passages that were naturally easy to memorize (e.g., the parable of the two builders, Matthew 7:24-27). When the passages were placed in sequence, we attempted to connect theology- and life-related passages. For example, a passage about the presence of God (theology) connects well with a passage about prayer (life). That’s why Psalm 139:7-19 and Matthew 7:7-11 are placed back-to-back in our plan. Whenever it made sense, effort was given to balance the exposure of truth topics across the six year scope. This allows children who are introduced to the program in third grade, for example, to be exposed to as many topics as possible and to avoid unnecessary gaps. Children who begin the program in 1st grade and continue through 6th grade will receive the most benefit. GGoodd iiss ssoo GGoooodd Psalm 100:3-5 Recommended Age and Grade, Sequence and Quarter: 6-7 years old, 1st grade 1st Passage, Fall (1-1, Fall) Impress Kids’ Title: God is so Good Main Selection: Psalm 100:3-5 3 Know that the LORD is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the LORD is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations. Companion Verses: Psalm 106:1-2Psalm 107:1 Psalm 146:2Genesis 1:1Psalm 139:14 Summary and Benefits: The opening passage of this memory plan presents children with a clear invitation to “know that the Lord is God”. This passage echoes the opening message of the Book of Genesis, “It is He who made us, and we are His.” These are great cornerstone truths for young children who are forming their views of self, others, and the world. Along with the truth that God is Creator, this verse presents four foundational truths about God: God is to be praised. God is good. God’s love is sure. God is faithful. These are rock solid truths young children should treasure in their hearts and build their lives upon.

3 Know that the LORD is

God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture.

4 Enter his gates with

thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name.

5 For the LORD is good and

his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

GGoodd’’ss LLoovvee MMaaddee aa WWaayy John 3:16 Recommended Age and Grade, Sequence and Quarter: 6-7 years old, 1st grade 2nd Passage, Winter (1-2, Winter) Impress Kids’ Title: God’s Love Made a Way Main Selection: John 3:16 16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. Companion Verses: Psalm 103:8 Romans 3:23 Romans 5:8 1 John 4:19 Mark 16:15 Summary and Benefits: This well-known Bible verse builds upon God’s “enduring love” from previous passage (Ps 103:3-5), introducing His love in action, “He gave.” God’s love that brings hope and salvation through His Son, Jesus Christ, is presented at the very beginning of this memory plan. Locking this verse in young children’s hearts is especially valuable for at least two reasons: It captures the gospel message simply and in fewer than thirty words! Also, it is arguably the best known Bible verse in the world, so we thought we’d better include it!

16 For God so loved the

world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep. 27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one can snatch them out of my hand. 29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one can snatch them out of my Father’s hand. Companion Verses: Romans 6:23 1 Peter 3:18 John 5:24 John 6:37 Summary and Benefits: Jesus’ personal words in this passage reinforce in children’s hearts that Jesus Christ is a Person. This is an important truth to grasp and we hope that it will help children develop a genuine and personal relationship with their Lord. This passage builds on the truth of eternal life and its security based upon the Father’s greatness and strength.

The previous passages have introduced Jesus as the “Son of God” and “Good Shepherd.” This passage introduces the command to love others. Children lock in the truth that their relationship with Him is closely connected to their relationships with others.

37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the

I am going there to prepare a place for you. 3 And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am. 4 You know the way to the place where I am going.” 5 Thomas said to him, “Lord, we don’t know where you are going, so how can we know the way?” 6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” Companion Verses: Acts 4:12 John 11:25-26 1 John 5:11-12 Summary and Benefits: Jesus describes heaven as, “my Father’s house.” He also says He is preparing a place. An inviting picture is conjured in the minds of children as they imagine the Father, the “house” the “rooms”, and Jesus’ preparation. This passage builds on the truth that God desires to be with His people. Jesus teaches that He is the way to the Father. Jesus’ importance is reinforced in children’s minds as He reveals that He is the way, the truth, and the life. This is intentionally a recurring theme of this memory plan.

(Acronym for Ask, Seek and Knock) Main Selection: Matthew 7:7-11 7 Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened. 9 Which of you, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a snake? 11 If you, then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him! Companion Verses: Isaiah 65:24 Jeremiah 29:12 Jeremiah 33:3 Summary and Benefits: Children are accustomed to asking. This passage capitalizes on that introducing a spiritual truth and a

glimpse into the goodness of God. This will be a favorite memory verse for children as it’s full of promise and has easy imagery. This passage builds on the understanding of the Father in heaven and presents an open-door policy to Him. The Father’s goodness is reinforced further as He is shown as being approachable and welcoming prayer.

7 Ask and it will be given to

Where can I flee from your presence? 8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. 9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, 10 even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast. Companion Verses: John 4:24 Isaiah 41:13 Jeremiah 23:23-24 Summary and Benefits: One of the earliest questions children ask about God is, “Why can’t I see Him?” This verse provides an answer, at least in part, by teaching children that God is Spirit. “Is God always with me?” is another common question asked by boys and girls. This passage presents the truth that God is everywhere present at the same time (omnipresent). Equipping children’s hearts with these two truths about God is a huge benefit to them. Children can take great comfort that no matter where they are (dark, scary, or lonely places), they are never alone. Though they cannot see Him, they can rest knowing God is everywhere they are. This passage reinforces personal security and the accessibility of God.

7 Where can I go from your

Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?

8 If I go up to the heavens,

you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

9 If I rise on the wings of the

10 even there your hand

will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven. Companion Verses: John 8:12 Psalm 19:14 Ephesians 2:10 Colossians 3:17 Summary and Benefits: Children want to know they are needed. Not unlike adults, they desire to be important and to have a purpose. This selection presents the truth that children of God are His representatives. Therefore, wherever they are in the world, children are charged with the purpose of bringing honor to God. The investment of this truth in their hearts will motivate children to be more aware of their attitudes and behavior as they see themselves in this new light – God’s representatives! The previous truths the children have memorized should promote a ready desire within children to bring glory to their Father in heaven.

Companion Verses: John 13:17 James 1:22-25 Psalm 119:11 Psalm 19:7 Summary and Benefits: The simplicity and imagery of the two builders is fun for children to memorize. Jesus’ comparison between the wise and foolish builders, presents the consequences of obedience and disobedience. It also provides children with a memorable definition of wisdom: knowing and obeying truth. The truths of this passage build upon the previous passage (Psalm 18:30-32) by showing the importance of the Word of God and that His Word is to be obeyed. Also, the strength and security from the “Rock” of the previous passage are further illustrated here.

24 Therefore everyone

who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock.

25 The rain came down,

the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock.

26 But everyone who hears

these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand.

27 The rain came down,

the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.

Companion Verses: Psalm 73:24-26 Romans 8:28 Jeremiah 32:17 Summary and Benefits: This well-known psalm is a treasure to invest in children’s hearts. God makes it very clear that He is passionate about being with His children and about His children being with Him. Most children love new things and this passage presents the future reality when all things are made “new”. Children are very curious about heaven, making this passage a favorite for them to memorize. The final statement reinforces the faithfulness of God’s Word.

Companion Verses: Jeremiah 17:7-8 Psalm 32:8 Colossians 3:17 Philippians 4:6 Summary and Benefits: Trusting is God is the only way of life for the Christian who seeks to please God. As children grow they become more and more responsible to make decisions. This passage helps children know they are not without help. God invites them to seek His guidance in daily life. Children are encouraged to acknowledge God in all their ways placing their trust or confidence in Him. Children are instructed to fear God which always results in departure from evil. This is great preparation for the passage to follow, “Say ‘No’ to ungodliness” (Titus 2:11-13).

5 Trust in the LORD with all

your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

6 in all your ways

acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

Titus 2:11-13 Recommended Age and Grade, Sequence and Quarter: 9-10 years old, 4th grade 2nd Passage, Winter (4-2, Winter) Impress Kids’ Title: God’s Grace Teaches Me how to Live Main Selection: Titus 2:11-13 11 For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men. 12 It teaches us to say “No” to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age, 13 while we wait for the blessed hope—the glorious appearing of our great God and Savior, Jesus Christ. Companion Verses: 1 John 1:5 1 Peter 2:24 Galatians 5:22-23 1 Corinthians 10:31 Summary and Benefits: Nine to ten year-old children are becoming more aware of worldly “things”. They are more exposed to temptations and peer pressures. This verse introduces the truth that the same grace that provided salvation, also calls us to self-control and godly lives. This truth, impressed upon their hearts, provides license and authority to say “NO” when faced with temptations that will distract, deceive, and destroy. The passage ends with attention on the “blessed hope” – the appearing of Jesus Christ.

11 For the grace of God that

brings salvation has appeared to all men.

12 It teaches us to say “No”

to ungodliness and worldly passions, and to live self-controlled, upright and godly lives in this present age,

13 while we wait for the

And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when he appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. Companion Verses: Ephesians 5:1 1 Peter 1:23 Ephesians 2:8 Philippians 3:9 Summary and Benefits: This passage powerfully describes the all-out love of God that makes us His own children. That is what we “are” currently. What a welcoming, belonging, value affirming, identity forming concept for children to hold on to. “The World” – Communicates the distinction between children of God and the world. This verse coordinates nicely with the previous selection (Titus 2:11-13) with more truth about Jesus’ physical return.

1 How great is the love the

Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Companion Verses: 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17 Matthew 6:19-21 Summary and Benefits: These two verses are packed with powerful truths great for children’s hearts. It’s a passage about belonging and anticipation. The first verse sets children’s hearts on their real and enduring home – heaven. The second verse sets children’s hearts on their Savior whose power is limitless and by His power will bring transform our bodies to become like His body. Companion Verses: Romans 3:10-11 Isaiah 53:6 Romans 5:8 Mark 16:15 Summary and Benefits: This clear message of deliverance is a potent for children hearts and reinforces the message of redemption through Christ. It is especially good for children who are a little older and more aware of their failures and shortcomings. It names two worlds: dominion of darkness and the kingdom of the Son. Children of God have been rescued from the former and have been made citizens of the latter. The truth of our allegiance to God’s kingdom connects nicely to the previous passage (Phil 3:20-21).

Companion Verses: Psalm 119:105 Joshua 1:8 Hebrews 4:12 James 1:13 Summary and Benefits: “I know” is commonly heard from preteens. This is normal as children get older, they become more self reliant. This passage, lovingly and firmly appeals to children to listen and obey God; to follow wisdom. The benefits for regarding this instruction are protection and guidance. The previous selection (Colossians 1:13, 14) informs the child that they are brought into the Kingdom of the Son. Here, they are instructed to live as children of that kingdom by following wisdom and turning from evil.

10 Listen, my son, accept

Companion Verses: Isaiah 55:6-7 1 John 1:9 Psalm 32:1 James 1:13-15 Summary and Benefits: The previous passage, Proverbs 4:10-15, encourages children to turn from evil. However, as preteens become more exposed to the lures of the world, they will not always turn. Hiding this passage in their hearts will help them know what to do on those occasions when they give way to temptation. Children are encouraged to have hearts that are sensitive to God, willing to agree with Him when they sin and respond in confession and repentance.

Companion Verses: James 2:10 Romans 6:23 1 Peter 3:18 2 Corinthians 5:21 Psalm 34:14 Summary and Benefits: Preteens normally lack confidence putting their feelings into words. Their silence is compounded further on occasions when they are burdened by shame and guilt. Psalm 51:1-2 provides a prayer of confession, giving the broken heart words to say. This is a great passage for children to have ready in their hearts. This passage reveals that God is merciful, loving, compassionate and ready to forgive. This selection is a great follow up to the previous passage, Proverbs 28:13-14, which encourages confession and repentance.

Companion Verses: Isaiah 9:6 Jeremiah 32:17 John 1:1-4 Hebrews 13:8 Summary and Benefits: Whatever preteens may have learned about Jesus previously, this passage is likely to realign their image! Colossians 1:15-18 declares Jesus supreme over “everything.” He is Creator and sustainer of all things. He is God and supreme over all authorities, earthbound and otherwise. He is the head of the church. Jesus, who is supreme over all things, is presented as the ultimate servant in the next selection (Philippians 2:4-8). These truths underscore His worthiness of worship, trust, obedience, service . . . all!

15 He is the image of the

16 For by him all things

Companion Verses: Matthew 11:29 1 Peter 2:21 1 Corinthians 11:1 Ephesians 4:32 Summary and Benefits: Being a servant is usually not on the top-ten life aspirations of most preteens; yet, this passage reveals Jesus as the “supreme” servant and example to follow. Children are challenged to imitate Jesus’ attitude of servant hood, humility and personal sacrifice for the sake of others. The contrast between Jesus’ supremacy over “all things” (Colossians 1:15-18, previous selection) and His ultimate “death on a cross” is awesome and, potentially, life-changing.

4 Each of you should look

not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.

5 Your attitude should be

the same as that of Christ Jesus:

6 Who, being in very nature

God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped,

7 but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness.

8 And being found in

appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

Main Selection: 1 John 4:9-12 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us. Companion Verses: 1 John 4:15-16 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 1 John 2:2 Summary and Benefits: This passage brings into focus the demonstration of God’s love – the sacrifice of His Son to provide atonement for our offenses. With God’s example as the backdrop, children are challenged to follow by loving others. Children learn from this passage that by loving others, they become an extension or conduit of God’s love to the world around them. These truths are reminiscent of several of the great truths children memorized earlier in the program (e.g., John 3:16, Matthew 22:37-39, Matthew 5:14-16).

9 This is how God showed

his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him.

What better way to conclude the program than with the prayer Jesus modeled for His disciples. 10 your kingdom come,

your will be done on earth as it is in heaven.

11 Give us today our daily

bread.

12 Forgive us our debts, as

we also have forgiven our debtors.

13 And lead us not into

temptation, but deliver us from the evil one. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.’”
