Mind Map - Richie Benaud Immersive

• By using Mindomo, I have been able to give a structure to the Immersive Web Experience.

• The numbered boxes are the main path for the story, starting with the load screen, and moving through Growing Up, Playing Career, Media Career, Retirement, Obituary, and Summary.

• The offshoots from each section, refer to additional content, which will take many forms including text, audio and video.

• By using this mind mapping technique, I can assess how straight forward the IWE is, and make adjustments where I, or any viewers, make a suggestion to make the finalised product a much more user-friendly experience.

• In using Mindomo, I feel that the end product has a logical structure, and will enable the viewer to access the content in a way that is easy on the eye and ear.

Richard Benaud OBE

• Richard Benaud OBE, more usually referred to as Richie, was an Australian cricketer, player and captain between 1952 and 1964.

• After retirement, he forged a media career, firstly in newspaper journalism, and then moved into radio and television commentary.

• Played a large part in the introduction of World Series Cricket, with Kerry Packer in 1977.

Home Screen

• The home screen sets the tone of the immersive web experience.

• When this screen has loaded, an audio file plays which is a collection of ambient sounds from a cricket match, including sounds of leather ball on willow, and gentle applause from the crowd.

• The reason for this is to help the viewer to imagine they are sat at a cricket match watching a game.

• The audio plays throughout the page to give a consistent theme.

First Section

Click to add text

• The first section after the load screen is designed to be a brief introduction to Richie Benaud for those who may not have seen or heard his work.

• By keeping the introduction brief, it allows the viewer to choose the pace and route in which they engage with the content.

• The ideal pace of the content is specifically designed to be a gentle one, to reflect the way in which Test Match Cricket is played.

• This is a deliberate design feature to engage with lovers of the game, and also to pull in a new, untapped audience.

• There will be a floating navigation bar at the bottom of the screen, but one that will not intrude on the text area.

Second Section

• The general theme described in the initial Mindomo mind map, is to follow Richie Benaud's journey from childhood through to his death in 2015.

• By using that path, it is one that is logical to me with a general progression like someone growing up, and hopefully the viewer will also see this in the same way.

• In the finalised immersive web experience, I will also include links to various outside hosted content. So, for example, I would include on this page, links to the Australian town of Penrith, Louis and Richie Benaud's cricketing statistics, the Cumberland cricket team, and an external link to the Parramatta High School website.

• I want to create an immersive web experience, but one that the viewer can engage with as much information away from it as well.

Third Section

Third Section

• In the third section of the immersive web experience, the first of the video clips is introduced to accompany the text and audio.

• The embedded video has the option to play at the viewer's request, rather than an autoplay facility. This allows the viewer to make the choice to engage with the clip if they choose to.

• Once they click to play the video, the ambient sound file will pause until such time as the video ends, or the viewer chooses to pause the content.

• Within this section, there are further details of Richie Benaud's playing career, including links to First-Class and Test Match Statistics, Test Match Scorecards, and other players that played in the same team and the opposition team in the same matches and series .

Fourth Section

Fourth Section

• In this section, the focus changes to Benaud's career after retiring from playing Cricket.

• There are links to his printed work, books and newspaper articles over many years, as well as audio/video links to his commentary work and interviews given over a 55 year period.

• In addition to this, I have featured other content, including work by impressionists, and parody work, most notably by Billy Bermingham in the Twelth Man tapes and DVD's

• The younger audience who view this immersive web experience will know Richie Benaud from this work in this field, rather than his considerable first-class and test match career.

Fifth Section

Fifth Section

• In the fifth section, the IWE covers the World Series Cricket saga in which Benaud was an major player.

• Kerry Packer was dissatisfied with the way in which cricket was covered in Australia, so together with major players in the game, including Benaud, persuaded the biggest names in the game to play in this "rival" series.

• Much has been written about the saga, the wounds it created and the changes to the game that is instigated.

• There will be links to relevant content such as Kerry Packer, Coloured Clothing, Video of the games, and the documentary, HOWZAT - The Kerry Packer Story.

• This section is a recent addition to the Immersive Web Experience, with the sad passing of Richie Benaud in April 2015.

• There will be coverage of his funeral, and tributes from his peers and fans around the world.

• Links to audio/video, online and printed tributes, and social media engagement will be added.

• It will add gravitas to the Immersive Web Experience, as it will focus on the celebration of his life, rather than just being an obituary.
