4 Dossier de presse - IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL PARIS

The Atelier des Lumières, a digital art centre in Paris, is presenting the IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL, a festival devoted to immersive digital design.

During the Toussaint (All Saints’ Day) holidays, from 18 au 24 October, the Atelier des Lumières will present works by some of the most influential artistic collectives in the world of the digital arts. These works, which have been specifically adapted to and designed for the Atelier des Lumières, will be presented for six evenings, as of 7 p.m. Each competing work will be appraised by a professional jury and the visitors.

These evenings will be held in conjunction with the immersive digital exhibition ‘Van Gogh: Starry Night’, which will be presented during the day.A special prize-giving evening will be held on Thursday 24 October in the presence of the artists, the jury, and the Festival’s partners.

THE ATELIER DES LUMIÈRES

« THE IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL IN PARIS » THE LEADING FESTIVAL DEVOTED TO IMMERSIVE DIGITAL DESIGN

FROM 18 TO 24 OCTOBER 2019 FROM 7 P.M. TO 11 P.M.

The 11 artistic collectives will use techniques that combine video, photography, motion design, and sound spatialisation. The works must not only use all the Atelier’s technological power (140 video projectors, 50 speakers, 3,000 m2 of projection surface, etc.), but also present a completely immersive and original artistic concept. For the first time, the Atelier des Lumières is holding a competition between digital design professionals by involving digital art enthusiasts and visitors (who can vote there and then on a dedicated mobile application), and a professional jury. This first festival will provide an opportunity to present digital design as a form of artistic expression in its own right.

Digital design involves ‘digital sculpting’, a process of using computer-generated images to design living spaces and create interaction with the public. The projected images, combined with sound design, make it possible to create unique immersive worlds.

THE IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL:

> 6 evenings from 18 to 23 October> the works will be projected continuously, from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. > a 4-minute-long immersive show per artistic collective on a theme of their choice > a 50-minute screening period> 1 prize-giving evening on 24 October

BRUNO MONNIER, PRESIDENT OF CULTURESPACESAND FOUNDER OF THE ATELIER DES LUMIÈRES

By creating a venue devoted to immersive art in the heart of Paris, Culturespaces has taken one more step towards cultural democratisation and innovation.

Since the Atelier des Lumières opened in April 2018, it has welcomed visitors from all walks of life and provides visitors with a veritable artistic experience that combines art, music, and aesthetic pleasure.

Modern technology has provided new ways of bringing together works that are dispersed around the world, enabling visitors to discover them, and sharing them. It is a new way of apprehending artists and their works.

We would like to go even further through more innovation, by improving our technology, and by working closely with digital artists. That is why we have launched the Immersive Art Festival, which enables the general public to discover works by digital design artists. We are giving a voice to international artistic collectives and we are also pleased to present the work of the École des Gobelins in Le STUDIO.

With this festival, we wish to establish digital design as an art in its own right and participate in the debate on immersive art.We are hoping to hold another edition of this event and extend it to all our digital art centres.

6 Dossier de presse - IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL PARIS

MICHAEL COUZIGOU, DIRECTOR OF THE IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL

Why are you holding this festival?

For almost forty years, digital art has become a new artistic movement in the world of contemporary art. This art encompasses many more forms of expression, which are often defined by the technology used: generative art, virtual art, audiovisual art, digital installations, and so on.

The IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL aims to highlight the work of ‘digital designers’ and ‘motion designers’. DIGITAL DESIGN and MOTION DESIGN are a form of artistic expression, which is gradually making its mark in the world of the contemporary visual arts.

Thanks to technology, the artists can now free themselves from the frame and the screen. Their creative scope has become limitless. The ‘motion designers’ are primarily creative graphic artists—illustrators who specialise in digital art. Their working tool is a computer: thanks to design and 3D modelling software, the motion designers can bring digital artistic works to life. The technical complexity of the Atelier des Lumières is a veritable challenge for the festival’s artists. The idea is to screen a four-minute project on a theme of their choice. The difficulty lies in the storytelling, the production of the images (like a choreographer or a stage director), and the production of the content, whose files are enormous.

The difficulty of creating 360-degree works

The artists, who produce these immersive projects, have to invent a new artistic language, a new form of storytelling that places the visitor at the centre of the experience. The difficulty of the exercise—for the artists—is whether they can really create something from the perspective of the visitor who will enjoy this immersive artistic experience.

The artists must master the technical complexity of the Atelier des Lumières. But they will also have to create a story that will be projected onto the Atelier’s walls: the architecture of La Halle will become the support for this work. The industrial elements—the tank, chimney, storeroom, and the pool—are screens and elements that will play a key role in the screening of the artistic projects. La Halle and its architecture will become key elements in the creation of the works. The creation and production of the soundtrack (sound design) is very important: sound is undoubtedly the most immersive element of human perception. The artists will produce an original work, composed and created by them. Others will perhaps choose familiar music, which will also captivate the visitor and perfectly complement the artistic theme.

Dossier de presse - Atelier des Lumières 7

An ambulatory and contemplative artistic experience

We have been conditioned by the cinema for more than 120 years: spectators seated on rows of seats in a cinema watch a screen. Watching television at home is the same thing. The artists want to take the visitor into a completely immersive world. The interplay of the images and their screening in the exhibition space will encourage the visitors to stroll around La Halle. The architectural elements, highlighted by the interplay of images and the immersive soundtrack, will be the key components of the experience.

VISITOR VOTING

During the festival, each visitor is invited to download a dedicated application (Apple Store or Android) free of charge. After viewing all the works by the artistic collectives, the visitors can vote there and then for their favourite work via the application.Visitors’ votes will represent 50% of the mark awarded for the ‘Immersive Art Festival’ First Prize.

11 PROJECTS IN COMPETITION

SPECTRELAB (France)

PRESENTATIONSpectre Lab is a multidisciplinary creative studio. Coming from various backgrounds, the Parisian team masters both the artistic and technical aspects of a project (concept, scenography, technical definitions, 3D animations, production…). The studio is involved in all types of projects, from the most intimate to the most complex or large-scale.

NOTE OF INTENTSoft Shadows

Light is a physical phenomenon essential for human vision, but it also has a strong symbolic significance associated with knowledge in all human cultures. Traditionally, the opposition between light and darkness is associated with the opposition between good and evil. But this very Manichean vision must be overcome and the reality of what surrounds us is much more nuanced: everything is about variations, vibrations, halftones.

We propose a visual journey from the depths of the earth to the celestial vault questioning this balance, this unstable coexistence between shadow and light.

NOTE OF INTENTDatamonolith

What would happen if the consciousness of the world’s oldest data on origins and artificial intelligence converged to create a hybrid public architectural art? DATAMONOLITH is an artistic project born of the encounter between ancient archaeological data and an algorithm of artificial intelligence. The Turkish archaeological site of Göbekli Tepe is perhaps the oldest temple dating back over 14,000 years. The discovery of this site has challenged our knowledge of early human architecture, and archaeologists have collected a lot of scientific data. These data are compiled in a «GAN» (Generative Adversarial Networs) to create images from these archaeological data. We offer a total immersion in the heart of these data.

NOTE OF INTENTPortal

In 2014, while researching techniques for their latest audiovisual performance, a secretive team of artists, physicists and philosophers chanced upon a wondrous technology that allowed them to unpick the strands from which the very fabric of reality is woven. 24 Dossier de presse - IMMERSIVE ART FESTIVAL PARIS

During the festival, the GOBELINS, the School of the Image, Cutback Live (which specialises in visual scenography), and the Atelier des Lumières will present a student project—specifically created for Le Studio in the Atelier des Lumières—, which will use immersive motion design to illustrate a selection of twelve songs by the artiste Orelsan.

Twenty-four students from the 2018–2019 Graphic Motion Design class (combined with work experience) at the GOBELINS have worked on this project in order to present twelve one-minute-long works. The ensemble was presented during an evening event to honour the students and will be continuously visible in Le Studio, from 18 to 24 October 2019.

Working in pairs, the students had to conceive a project (in three weeks) that combines typography with the creation of large-format images, and that highlights the theme and musicality of the song attributed to them by drawing lots. The work was carried out in two phases: an initial phase of designing the lettering to present the song’s title, and then the creation of motion typography in order to immerse the visitor in a visual and sensorial experience. In addition to the technical difficulty, the students had to free themselves from the artiste’s existing music videos.

The public can visit two distinct areas in the Atelier des Lumières: LA HALLE and LE STUDIO.

IN LA HALLE: - Long programme: ‘Van Gogh: Starry Night’ The immersive exhibition retraces Vincent van Gogh’s creative years that transformed the history of art and painting. From sunny landscapes to nightscapes, portraits, and still lives, masterpieces evoke the highly emotional and poetic inner world of the artist, who was unrecognised during his lifetime. This is a visual and musical journey that offers a fresh insight into van Gogh’s painting and chromatic richness. By Gianfranco Iannuzzi, Renato Gatto, and Massimiliano Siccardi. With the musical collaboration of Luca Longobardi.

- Short programme: ‘Dreamed Japan: Images of the Floating World’ The Danny Rose Studio will be presenting an ongoing immersive exhibition about the imaginary Japanese works and scenes that held such fascination for van Gogh. From the iconic Great Wave by Hokusai to the ephemeral beauty of cherry blossoms, visitors are invited to have a contemplative experience in van Gogh’s imaginary Japan. By the Danny Rose Studio. IN LE STUDIO: - Verse: an original production for the Atelier des Lumières Exclusively created for the Atelier des Lumières, Verse transports visitors into the centre of the universe. In an area dedicated to contemporary works, Le STUDIO gives digital artists carte blanche to give vent to their creativity. Light snacks are available in the bar.
