Some would say that Epiphany is the day the Wisemen showed up at Joseph and Marys stable with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. Biblically speaking, this is probably not accurate. According to scriptural clues, the Wisemen showed nearly two years after Jesus was born. Others think of Epiphany as the day Jesus was presented in the temple and greeted by Simeon and Anna. This too is Biblically inaccurate. Luke tells us that Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple on the eighth day after his birth, not the twelfth day. So what then is Epiphany? An epiphany is a sudden, shocking insight in which we often give God credit for whatever that insight might be. It is different from a theophany which is when God appears to someone. When Moses saw the burning bush, he experienced a theophany. When Simeon and Anna met baby Jesus in the temple, they had a theophany and an epiphany. The theophany was that Jesus was in their presence. The epiphany was that they somehow knew that baby Jesus was the son of God. We celebrate the day of Epiphany with the reading of the Wisemen and their interactions with Herod and then the Holy Family. Their first insight came to them through the star they followed. Their second insight came to them after talking to Herod when God revealed to them that Herod meant harm to the Christ child and the Wisemen advised Joseph to take his family down to Egypt to be safe. As we move through the Christmas season and into the season of Epiphany, remember that the gift of Jesus that we received on Christmas Day isnt a one-day-only event. It is more than a season or even a life. It is eternal. Happy Epiphany!

We all know The Twelve Days of Christmas, that song that seems to drag on

and on. But do you know when the twelve days of Christmas begin and what they

signify?

Traditions vary, so depending on which tradition you follow, the first day of

Christmas could either be Christmas Day itself or December 26th (otherwise known as

St. Stephen’s Day). And if you count out twelve days, you end on either January 5th

(known as the Twelfth Night in some cultures) or on January 6th, also known as

Epiphany.

Some cultural histories report that the Christmas celebrations actually went on

for twelve days. Why twelve days? No one is really sure, but one guess is that there

was one day of celebrating for each of the twelve disciples.

For us modern Christians of the Western world, the twelve days of Christmas

has become nothing more than an annoying song. For Immanuel and the ELCA, the

twelve days of Christmas is the actual Christmas season. They are the only days that

some would say it is appropriate to sing Christmas songs. The season of Christmas

ends with the beginning of the season of Epiphany.

But what is Epiphany? Some would say that Epiphany is the day the Wisemen

showed up at Joseph and Mary’s stable with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.

Biblically speaking, this is probably not accurate. According to scriptural clues, the

Wisemen showed nearly two years after Jesus was born. Others think of Epiphany as

the day Jesus was presented in the temple and greeted by Simeon and Anna. This too

is Biblically inaccurate. Luke tells us that Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to the temple

on the eighth day after his birth, not the twelfth day.

So what then is Epiphany? An epiphany is a sudden, shocking insight in which

we often give God credit for whatever that insight might be. It is different from a

theophany which is when God appears to someone. When Moses saw the burning

bush, he experienced a theophany. When Simeon and Anna met baby Jesus in the

temple, they had a theophany and an epiphany. The theophany was that Jesus was in

their presence. The epiphany was that they somehow knew that baby Jesus was the

son of God.

We celebrate the day of Epiphany with the reading of the Wisemen and their

interactions with Herod and then the Holy Family. Their first insight came to them

through the star they followed. Their second insight came to them after talking to Herod

when God revealed to them that Herod meant harm to the Christ child and the

Wisemen advised Joseph to take his family down to Egypt to be safe.

As we move through the Christmas season and into the season of Epiphany,

remember that the gift of Jesus that we received on Christmas Day isn’t a one-day-only

event. It is more than a season or even a life. It is eternal.

Happy Epiphany!

Preschool Scholarship Donations

Wee Care Preschool is currently seeking scholarship donations for our 3-year-old program. Tuition for the 3-year-old program is $100 per month (Sept-May). In the past we have been able to give full tuition scholarships and we would like to be able to contin-ue to do so for the future. You can designate this on your giving envelopes and write “preschool scholar-ship”. If you have questions, you can contact Lindsey O’Loughlin, board president, or any other member of the Wee Care Preschool board.

Wee Care Preschool hopes everyone had a safe and very Merry Christmas! It’s hard to believe that the new year is upon us. Our Christmas concert was a great success. Thank you for all that attended! We also collected over 400 items (over 700 pounds!) for the local food bank - doubling our goal. Class resumes on Thursday, January 3, for the four-year-old class and Friday, January 4, for the three-year-old class.

Milk Moola is a year round fundraiser that Wee Care participates in. If you get beverages from Kwik Star that have a cent value on the lid or top of the bag, please save these and deposit them in the cardboard box by the preschool. Scholastic is a great program that everyone benefits from using. Wee Care gets points for every book ordered that we can use for supplies for the classroom. To order, go to https://clubs.scholastic.com/home and set up an account. You will have to enter your name, email, and phone number as well as a classroom code - ours is LVZN8. If it asks for a child’s name, please put your name (the person ordering) so that we know who to get the item to. Catalogs are available online to look at or you can select the age or grade level of the child you are shopping for. These books are great for Christmas and birthday gifts! In fact, Wee Care, with the support of those in the community, will be purchasing a $1 book every month for every child in our class to take home! We couldn’t do any of this without your help and appreciate any and all contributions. Thank you in advance for your continued support with all of these programs!

Registration opens for the 2019-2020 school year on January 9. Please see the right side of this page for more information! Nicole Schmitz Director/PK4 Teacher, Wee Care Preschool [email protected]

Boots for Kids Shalom Circle is collecting new or used boots in good and clean condition for children who have a need of them at the elementary schools. A box is located in the entry for your donation. Thank you!

Minutes/Actions Church Council Minutes November 27, 2018

The council meeting was called to order at 7:00pm by President Ron Oline. Members present were Ron Oline, Brittany Gosse, Paula Fleming, Erin Kelchen, Dennis Enright, Aaron Losey, Emily Cahalan and Pastor Greg DeBoer. Council members were given an opportunity to share highs and lows. Devotions were read by Ron. A motion was made and seconded, the following resolu-tion was adopted, “Be it resolved to approve the Oc-tober Minutes of the Church Council Meeting.” Treasurer Daryl Johnson presented the Financial Report for October. General fund monthly expenses were $32,722.68 and general income was $23,634.31. Year to date expenses were $127,500.57 and year to date income was $99,226.17. A motion was made and se-conded, the following resolution was adopted, “Be it resolved to approve the October Financial Report as presented.” Gene Budzine presented bids for snow removal. It was discussed how volunteers were unable to always be available when snow removal was needed. After dis-cussion, a motion was made and seconded, “Be it re-solved to approve G & L Lawn Rangers, LLC for snow removal.” Dennis shared that the couches in the narthex were re-moved and replaced with couches donated by Gary and Marieta Gissel. Mike Hulseberg is working on putting windows in the office doors. Emily shared that All Things Members are currently fi-nalizing shirts. Paula shared that Preschool board may have resolved their substitute teacher problem. Aaron shared that Youth board collected 128 boxes. A group of youth and adults went to Minneapolis to help sort through boxes. Gina is happy to share that there are regularly 25 students attending SWAG. She would like to have some adult help. The board discussed op-tions. They would like to seek a volunteer, but, may need to offer a salary to the person. They are thinking the person would work 2 ½ hours per week. They would like to be able to offer $10 per hour. After discus-sion, a motion was made and seconded,” Be it re-solved to seek a volunteer or paid person to help with SWAG at 2 ½ per week.” If they are unable to find a volunteer, they will use their funds for salary. They would seek to amend their budget if needed.

Brittany shared that Worship and Music is looking into a licensure for movie and media clips. The cost is $255 per year. They will see if there are enough items they would like to use to offset the cost. Other-wise, they can pay for rights on a as needed basis. Pastor Greg is working on the profile for the church. He will contact the council when he has gone through the rough draft. Ann Gerrietts from Mission Investment funds has sent her thoughts on our church wants and needs. Worship and Music will be making some visual changes to the alter area of church. Property will be implementing a few of her ideas. The council dis-cussed an idea for more room for the youth of the church. The council will be looking into these ideas. A new booster has been added in the church for bet-ter WIFI reception. Julayne is ok with using her personal cell phone as needed for church related messages. The council briefly discussed the focus statement. Brittany Gosse and Emily Cahalan have volunteered to be administrators for our Facebook page. `The council discussed areas in church that would add more space for the youth groups. The meeting was adjourned at 9:20pm, followed by The Lord’s Prayer. Respectfully submitted by, Paula Fleming Council Secretary

services providers overworked and underpaid. Former refugees

striving to build new lives.

These are all issues faced by Iowans. Join us to make sure they

are heard at the Iowa State Capitol.

Please consider joining Lutheran Services in Iowa (LSI) and the

three Iowa synods of the ELCA for Lutheran Day on the Hill, an

annual day of advocacy in Des Moines to uplift the needs of our

neighbors. The event will be held on Tuesday, February 19. Visit

www.LSIowa.org/advocacy next month for event details, online

registration, and an online toolkit for your congregation.

If you are new to advocacy, come learn more about the

legislative process and your role as a citizen. If you’ve attended

before, join us again. We hope this year’s schedule will also

allow you more opportunities to connect with legislators. If you

would like more information, please contact Deb Whitford, LSI’s

director of philanthropy and church relations, at

[email protected].

Our Mission: Lutheran Services in Iowa responds to the love of Jesus Christ through compassionate service. LSI is an affiliated social ministry partner of the Iowa congregations of the ELCA (Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) and a member of LSA (Lutheran Services in America). We proudly serve people of all ages, abilities, religions, sexes, gender identities, national origins, ethnicities, races, and sexual orientations. Building a New Home

After spending almost 20 years in a refugee camp in Nepal, Na-

rayan and Chandra are grateful for the life they have built for

their family with support from LSI’s Refugee Community Ser-

vices.

After marrying in the camp, Narayan and Chandra resettled to

Des Moines in 2009. Everything was new. Everything was differ-

ent. Their child, Aaman, was a newborn, and they found them-

selves overwhelmed with medical bills. Chandra desperately

wanted to pursue her medical career. At the time, it seemed

impossible.

But LSI helped Chandra enroll in college classes. Narayan start-

ed volunteering at LSI as an interpreter. Later, he became a full-

time case manager with LSI, where he continues to lift up former

refugees by connecting them to resources, educational activi-

ties, and supporting them as they pursue citizenship.

“LSI supported me and allowed me to provide for my family. It

helped us establish ourselves in Iowa,” he says.

Chandra now works as a lab assistant in an Iowa pediatric clinic.

Narayan and Chandra have become homeowners and feel con-

fident, independent, and established in their new community.
