False Heroes Last weeks essay [Saints: Heroes & Heroines of Simplicity, 01/31/21] was a reflection on Sanctity using the example of St. Margaret of York. She has a lot to say about courage and clear sightedness from her eloquent espousal of Christian Witness. But we can also learn a lot from great sinners, not by following their example but by learning from their mistakes and going the other way! If the wages of sin is death (Romans 6:23), we can learn from them the traps and provocations of the evil one. A book I heartedly recommend on this subject is The Screwtape Letters by C.S. Lewis. It contains a brilliant collection of fictional letters between Screwtape, a senior devil, and his nephew, Wormwood, who is just beginning to tempt unsuspecting human beings away from the way of goodness to the way of destruction. One would think that this is difficult to do: How does one tempt a person away from the delights of living a righteous Godly life to a life of uncertainty, pain, yearning and ultimately disappointment? Unfortunately, it is quite easy since we are burdened with the results of Original Sin! And so, the devil can count on the tendency on our part to make wrong choices. After all, Adam and Eve gave up eternal joy for a piece of fruit! Following this inverted logic, we often admire people who have a lot of money, or can do whatever they choose, or have power over others, or seem to be enjoying themselves to no end. These are what I call baseline sinners. Many people make idols of these types; in fact, most people do! They mistakenly think that these things can bring happiness. But they cant. We have been made by God to seek the ultimate happiness which is God. Anything less than the infinite joy that only God can give will, in the end, disappoint. St. Augustine put it perfectly when in his book Confessions he wrote in a prayer to God: Our hearts are restless until they rest in Thee. This is one of the major truths in life, but most people dont seem to be aware of it. People settle for lesser goods like wealth, power, honors, pleasure; leaving them, at most, very unsatisfied and depressed or at worst addicted. Until we find God, we are condemned to despair and the Is that all there is? experience.
On the other hand, having great Saints that point beyond themselves to another realm of life (heaven) and who exhibit virtue in heroic proportions is just what humanity is asking for.
But, since the banishment of Faith and the real Saints, the public tends to idolize (notice the word!) a singer, or a rock star, or an athlete, so that by personalizing their attraction to them they can bask in their greatness and work hard to be like them, even if it is to be an unquestioning fan (short for fanatic) who looks past the idols moral failings to the area that attracts them. What does it matter, if a great baseball player cheats or drinks or is far from a wholesome example to the young, as long as he continues to hit the ball and field well? But ones moral failings do matter. In some sort of contradictory way, many in the media get this; but, unfortunately, instead of pointing to examples of true greatness, they appoint themselves to be grand inquisitors and look desperately to find something bad about the person so they can expose them as frauds. However, like all inquisitors, they reveal more about themselves than who they are trying to purify. In conclusion, I would invite anyone who wants to be inspired to be better than they are to go to the Saints. Put away your idols, whether they are from the screen or the playing field. The Saints are endlessly fascinating and lead lives that are not only great on earth, but have lasting power to open up horizons to the hereafter.
