T his has been an exciting year for IMI. On July 1st, 2013, we ocially came into being with no oces, a group of(highly successful) programs scattered across the campus, a lot of enthusiasm and not much else besides.

A year later, our ve graduate and two undergraduate degreeprograms are housed in the superb new Innovation Complex. As you’ll read in this, our rst annual report, we now have 1,300students studying in these programs, taught by an IMI faculty of 73 world-leading scholars and professionals who combine their IMI teaching and research with their primary roles in a multi-disciplinary array of departments across the University’s three campuses. All of this activity is supported by more than two dozen dedicated sta.

We have put on academic and professional conferences, as well as a dizzying array of events for our students and the community. Nor are we stopping there. We have plans to add to our graduate programs, and we’re in the process of setting up I-CUBE, our business accelerator that will stimulate and nurture a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst UTM’s students.

IMI programs are united by a single unifying concept: we produce mission-ready managers, from programs that combine the experiential teaching of management with that of aparticular science, industrial sector or profession. Currently these include (at the graduate level) professional accounting, biomedical communications, biotechnology, innovation, andsustainability, but we plan to add more.

IMI is, in other words, a business school with a dierence. This rstyear has been pivotal in shaping the future for this innovative institute and I look forward to our next steps as we build on this successful launch.

CULTIVATING LEADERS

The Institute oers professional master’s programs in biotechnology, biomedicalcommunications, accounting, innovation and sustainability - and undergraduateprograms in accounting, nance, marketing, and human resource management, along with a new PhD certicate program in professional development. Theseprograms will be housed in the new Innovation Complex, a four-story facility thatlets students in dierent programs learn with and from each other through sharedcourses, joint projects, and mutual study and social spaces.

The Institute for Management & Innovation (IMI) is ready for the future. A primary focus on innovation will help students develop the knowledge, creativity, collaboration skills and leadership abilities to take bright ideas – theirs and others – and put them into action.

“The typical structure within a university is to divide into manageable units asdepartments, but this (siloing) often means that expertise across departments is not widely shared,” says Ulrich Krull, Vice-Principal of Special Initiatives at UTM and theperson who proposed the Institute. “IMI and the Innovation Complex encouragethe elimination of silos so that communication across key sectors, such asmanagement, can be facilitated.”

08

IMI inaugural Director Hugh Gunz says the initiative will ultimately bolsterMississauga’s economic development. “We’re seeking to help Mississauga advance new partnerships in the business community, attract international talent and compete on a global scale.”

Page 10: IMI Annual Review 2013-2014

“At the University of Toronto Mississauga, we recognize the important role that innovation plays in the global knowledge economy,” said Professor Hugh Gunz, IMI’s inaugural Director. “In IMI, we have created a better ecosystem for training future innovators, entrepreneurs and managers who are essential for sustainable prosperity in our region. Our graduates will have the capacity to invent, innovate and transform new ideas into practical solutions for the Mississauga community and beyond,” Gunz said.

IMI LaunchJune 11, 2014. On hand for the launch were Mayor Hazel McCallion of the City of Mississauga and U of T’s Vice-President of Advancement David Palmer. “IMI graduates will apply their multidisciplinary knowledge to the sectors that are driving today’s growth,” said Professor Deep Saini, Vice-President, University of Toronto and Principal, U of T Mississauga. “This signature institute will generate new knowledge, build on our core professional programs and foster a culture of innovation.”

Page 11: IMI Annual Review 2013-2014

2014“It is imperative that we take a proactive role in growing and nurturing a highly skilled and talented labour force that promotes and supports innovation in business and education,” said McCallion. “The result will be a community with an

and investment from around the world.” The launch featured a panel discussion on innovation and competitiveness with Dr. Howard Alper, chair of Canada’s Science, Technology and Innovation Council; Dr. Ilse Treurnicht, CEO of the MaRS Discovery District; and Dr. Jason Field, president and CEO ofLife Sciences Ontario.

“U of T and the City of Mississauga share a dynamic partnership that has evolved over more than 40 years, and has helped create one of the most vibrant communities in Canada,” said President Meric Gertler. “Together, we are developing a framework for innovation to foster economic growth and build a great future for Mississauga”. “Beyond the borders of this campus, IMI will build a competitive advantage for regional and national industries,” Saini added. “That is the key to prosperity in the21st century, and UTM is poised to play its part.”

Plans for modifying the DIFA Program into a Master of Forensic Accounting (MFAcc) are underway.DIFA alumni have been surveyed and are extremely supportive, with 63 indicating their desire toupgrade their DIFA to an MFAcc. In addition, the DIFA program has been accepted as theeducational preparation for the new professional designation for forensic accountants, the CFF

However, negotiations to arrive at the transfer from a Canadian designation, the CA•IFA to the CFF,which were undertaken by Chartered Professional Accountants of Canada, have taken several yearsand many applicants chose to wait during this transition period. As a result, an entering class wasnot enrolled in 2014. Since the rst DIFA class graduated in 2003, the program has graduated266 alumni.

The MMPA program has a target enrolment of 85 students per year, and since it extends over 2.3 years, in the summer term we have well over 230 MMPA students studying on campus.

CPA Education Program, we have introduced several courses that will integrate learning and practice. Based on these and other changes, MMPA students will be exempt from all but thelast CPA (Capstone 2) module, which is just before the new CFE (Common Final Exam). In addition, we are in the midst of replacing our 16-month program with a new 12-month MMPA Program to begin September 1, 2015.

Master of Biotechnology

The Master of Biotechnology (MBiotech) program continues to be Canada's undisputed leader in

together the best in laboratory and classroom science, management, and an impressive array of full-time, paid internship opportunities. This academic year, all 39 students of the Class of 2015 secured internship placements, and a further 41 candidates were accepted into the new, incoming class, bolstering our total to 80 students. This year also saw the program diversify its teaching mission to include new electives for its students focused on patent law, creating new life science products, and the impact of biologic drugs in therapy. In terms of its unique value proposition, the program continues to attract high quality applicants, with this year's incoming cohort selected from among 153 candidates that achieved A- average grades in their undergraduate careers. Our vision for the future is to diversify our relationships with new and existing internship partners to grow and protect the range of hands-on career opportunities available to MBiotech students, and to adapt the learning experience to best equip students as the biotech industry continues to mature.

I chose UTM’s Management program for two reasons: First, it gave me an opportunity to experience and be a truly global citizen given its multiculturalism. Second, I believed that the talented faculty and resources such as the Finance Learning Centre would make

my learning experience exceptional.

The Management program has surrounded me with driven individuals who will eventually be

difference-makers.

I love its multicultural student body and staff as well as the myriad of on-campus opportunities available through student groups such as the Undergraduate Commerce Society.

I personally like UTM's Commerce program because it gives me a broader and deeper knowledge of commerce, while giving me a diverse perspective. At the same time, it equips me with the
