MENTALHEALTH(SRILANKA)In light of the conclusion of Sri Lanka’slong‐standing civilwar, manywere leftphysicallyand mentally scarred by the violence andupheaval. All of this and more have had atremendous impactonthepeople’sabilityto livemeaningful lives and to create a sustainablefuture for themselves. Returnees have gonethrough severe trauma and have endured thecollapse of strong, binding structures like homes and income sources thatprovided livelihoods for generations. Issues of guilt, depression, aggression, domestic violence, antisocial behavior, and fear are commonplace. As a result,IMHOmadementalhealthatoppriorityin2010,supportingsucheffortsasmulti‐disciplinary intervention teams, counseling, construction & development ofpsychiatricunits, supportforkeymentalhealthstaff, sponsorshipofWorldMentalHealthDayactivities, andmicrocreditinitiativesformentalhealthpatients.

The lossofpropertyand incomeremainsamajorobstacle inthe way of full recovery. Small‐scale microcredit & livelihood empowermenteffortshavehelpedpeopleworldwidetoemergefrompovertyandreclaimtheirlives, theirhealth, and their futures. The same is true in Sri Lankawhere IMHOhas been supporting a number of such initiatives in the most affected areasaimedathelpingthesevulnerablepeoplestorebuildtheirlives.
