IMC Charitable Foundation 2016 Annual Report3

In nearly two decades of charitable involvement, we have built lasting relationships with individuals and organizations that are improving lives through diligent effort and a commitment to making a positive impact. We are inspired by the difference that our charity partners are making and we seek to apply the high standards we set everywhere in our business to our donations and volunteer projects.

We remain committed to investing in the local communities where we live and work, with a particular focus on education and other programs that help young people develop to their fullest potential. Also, in recognizing the world’s increasing interconnectedness, we believe we have a role to play in supporting organizations in developing countries that are providing access to better education and health care. To that end, we expanded our international reach in 2016 by investing in three new projects that have developed a bold vision for improving lives in the developing world.

In this report, we are pleased to share details about some of the exciting work we funded in 2016 to build stronger schools, healthier families, and more vibrant societies. We are grateful to all the IMC employees who have brought their passion to these projects, and to all our charity partners who are applying their expertise to make a positive difference in the world.

Kind regards,

Rob Defares, Wiet Pot, Brian Hitchcock, Jan Willem Köhne, Scott Knudsen

FOREWORDOne of our core values at IMC is to take responsibility for others as well as ourselves.

This priority is evident in the way we tackle problems as a team and achieve results together.

It also underscores our commitment to actively supporting charity work and making it a visible

and vibrant part of IMC’s culture.

44 IMC Charitable Foundation 2016 Annual Report

2016 SUMMARYAt IMC, we believe that businesses and those who work for them should contribute towards

a better society. We embrace this through a joint commitment and shared responsibility

to fund the charitable foundations in each office and make that work visible and inclusive.

In 2016, we made more than 50 grants through our local giving program and supported

3 large international projects. We also empower individuals’ charitable interests by

matching employee donations and providing grants to the good causes in which they are

actively engaged. We supported over 250 charities identified by our people in 2016. Our work

is organized in three main areas: Global giving, local giving, and employee involvement.

Room to Read

In 2016, we chose to support Room to Read (www.roomtoread.org), a 17-year-old international literacy organization whose bold vision of a world transformed by educated children inspired us to invest in their work.

IMC is funding Room to Read’s expansion into additional communities in the eastern African country of Tanzania. Tanzania has a population of more than 53 million people, almost 90 percent of whom live on less than two dollars a day. Because a large portion of the population is under the age of 14, improving the education system is a challenge and a major opportunity to alleviate poverty.

We will support Room to Read’s work to train teachers, publish books in local languages, and build libraries that offer more children the life-changing effects of a strong education. The following table depicts the specific impact that our funding intends to achieve:

GLOBAL GIVINGOur largest single donation unifies IMC in support of one global project.

We hold an annual Trading for Charity event across all three offices where the proceeds

from an entire day of trading are donated to a cause that is chosen by our employees.

Save the Children: Reading Is the Future

Fred Hollows Foundation and Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia

2016 marked the second and concluding year of Reading Is the Future, the project that was funded by our previous Trading for Charity day. This initiative, sponsored through Save the Children (www.savethechildren.org), provided materials and training to over 13,000 students and 225 teachers at 34 schools in Haiti in the wake of the devastating 2010 earthquake. Fourteen IMC employees visited the project in Haiti over the course of two years to observe the work in action and deepen our understanding of IMC’s impact.

In addition to Trading for Charity, IMC’s Sydney office expanded our global giving reach with two new grantees in 2016. We funded the Fred Hollows Foundation (www.hollows.org), which works in 24 countries to eradicate avoidable blindness, supporting efforts to expand eye care services in rural and remote areas of Nepal, where 50% of people live below in poverty and there are 60,000 new cataract cases annually. We also provided a grant to Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (www.hamlin.org.au), which aims to eradicate obstetric fistula and reduce maternal mortality by training skilled midwives and putting them to work in rural Ethiopia.

“I have something that I can give back, skills that I can share, and opportunities that I can create for other people. I think it’s really important to share those and really celebrate the things we can do together.”Ciara, Chicago

ASIA-PACIFIC Bear Cottage – IMC Superhero Day

Bear Cottage (www.bearcottage.chw.edu.au) is a hospice that provides state-of-the art care facilities where parents and siblings of children with life-limiting conditions can stay together. It is a home away from home for families in need. We raised funds and awareness for Bear Cottage by holding a Superhero Day in the office where more than 50 IMC staff, their partners and children transformed into Spider-Man, Zorro and others to show their support.

LOCAL GIVINGOur local giving is focused on longer-term, larger donations to charitable organizations

that improve access to opportunities for young people. We provide support primarily through

financial grants and also by sharing access to networks and expertise. Below you will find

some examples of our activities from the past year in our three regions.

IMC Charitable Foundation 2016 Annual Report8

IMC Sky HighA two-year program for at-risk youth, IMC Sky High expands the horizons of students aged 13 to 15, improves their employment options, and promotes health and well-being. The program is run by the International Research Centre for Youth Futures and operates in close collaboration with schools, teachers and principals. IMC Charitable Foundation funding has enabled Sky High to run concurrently a research program whose outputs and outcomes will be used to develop knowledge about re-engagement and participation in learning.

OzHarvest

Robotics Programs

IMC continued its support for OzHarvest (www.ozharvest.org) and their flagship ‘Cooking for a Cause’ program, volunteering to cook restaurant-quality meals with donated ingredients for the estimated 1 in 10 Australians who rely on food relief each year. Our funding had a social and environmental impact in regional and metropolitan locations across the country, including immediate and ongoing health and well-being benefits, relieving the burden on local charities to enable them to redirect vital funding to education, employment, and rehabilitation programs.

IMC funded both the Technology and Learning Centre at Canley Heights Public School and the Robotics Club at Old Guildford Public School. Our volunteers helped to train teachers in making the most of these technologies, introduced novice students to coding, and coached more advanced students from Old Guildford Public School towards their first-ever entry in the FIRST Lego Robotics League. Students and teachers have been energized by their involvement in robotics, which brings coding to life and allows them to work together to overcome challenges.

EUROPE

De SchoolschrijverDe Schoolschrijver (www.deschoolschrijver.nl) aims to improve Dutch language capabilities of primary school children who usually do not come into contact with literature and books. Professional writers visit the supported schools every week for half a year to explore the world of language together with the children. They cultivate an interest in reading, introduce new vocabulary, and spark children’s imaginations.

“It feels really amazing to have an employer that supports my drive to help people in need, and it is great to be part of an organization where the administrative side of charity is taken care of and I can easily join events and get my donations matched.”Julien, Amsterdam

SAGA High Dosage Tutoring

SAGA Innovations (www.sagainnovations.org) operates a simple model: daily, individual math tutoring by trained tutors. It has proven to be very effective in helping students make significant gains in their math abilities. The IMC Charitable Foundation first funded SAGA’s expansion into several schools in Chicago, and is now supporting a program to provide tutoring in the Netherlands as well.

Collaborating with The Bridge Learning Innovations on implementation, and the University of Amsterdam on evaluation, IMC is supporting SAGA’s high dosage tutoring intervention for underprivileged secondary students at the Mundus College in Amsterdam. The program’s goal is to help students achieve statistically significant increases in their performance in standardized math tests.

Gamechangers Academy The objective of Gamechangers Academy (www.gamechangers-academy.nl) is to create a “level playing field” for Moroccan-Dutch youth via coaching and support. The program focuses on 20 key talents that will enable Moroccan-Dutch young people to participate in society and develop to their fullest potential.

“We all come from different backgrounds and not everyone is given the same opportunities as others, so being able to share that experience and speak about students’ passions and where they can see their future is very special.”Rachael, Sydney

IMC Weekendschool

Since 1998, IMC Weekendschool (www.imcweekendschool.nl) has offered supplementary education on Sundays to low-income students, introducing them to professionals from a wide variety of careers. This year we funded a new program, IMC Fundamentals, aimed at integrating the success of the Weekendschool curriculum into the mainstream Dutch education system.

In addition to classes on Sundays, students now have access to volunteers who visit classrooms during the week to discuss their jobs. This enables teachers to create connections between the IMC Fundamentals lectures and regular lessons. An initial evaluation of the program found that teachers are more motivated, and students gain confidence and get higher grades in their regular school subjects.

UNITED STATESPartnership with Corkery Elementary

Personalized Learning at Brooks College Prep

The school building at Corkery Elementary is over 100 years old, and the adjacent soccer field and playground, which are used frequently by neighborhood families, were in disrepair. IMC collaborated with several other funders on a Space to Grow project (www.spacetogrowchicago.org) to install a high-quality turf field, new playground equipment, and a school garden where students can learn how to grow food. When the project was complete, we celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony and a soccer game between IMC employees and students.

Teachers are using technology more than ever in their classrooms, and one promising application is personalized learning, which allows students to pursue their interests and advance through a curriculum at their own pace. IMC provided funding to the non-profit organization Leap Innovations (www.leapinnovations.org) to implement a whole-school embrace of personalized learning at Brooks College Prep in Chicago. The effort supports achievement by focusing on mastering specific competencies, increasing flexibility in how classroom time is used, and enabling students to monitor their own learning progress.

“It’s great that we bring kids into the office because the more that they see it and experience it, the more of a real concept it becomes and something to strive towards.”Janitza, Chicago

Cruyff Court

VOCELStudies have shown that low-income children typically acquire much less language ability by age three, which significantly impacts their educational outcomes later in life. IMC has made a three-year commitment to VOCEL (www.vocel.org), which offers high-quality early childhood education in an under-resourced neighborhood on Chicago’s west side. Their program includes classes for parents as well as regular measurement of children’s language exposure using a device described as a “Fitbit for words.”

IMC funded the construction of a soccer field in a densely populated, low-income neighborhood in Chicago in partnership with the Netherlands’ Johan Cruyff Foundation, the Chicago Park District, and Urban Initiatives. The Cruyff Court is used every day by the adjacent school for health and fitness programs as well as by many adults in the community who did not have facilities to play their favorite sport.

“I think the way IMC does charity is the way charity should be done. Charity is interwoven with the DNA of the company and it comes from an intrinsic motivation to give back.”Jeroen, Amsterdam

EMPLOYEE INVOLVEMENTWe support and encourage IMC employees to develop their own philanthropic interests

through our Make-Your-Mark program. Also, we organize volunteer activities with our

grantees and other organizations to further our impact and to provide opportunities for

deeper understanding of the challenges in our communities.

MAKE-YOUR-MARK Any employee can request that the IMC Charitable Foundation matches a set amount of personal donations per year to registered charities. We also make contributions to honor the effort of an IMC employee when they are regularly volunteering with an organization or participating in an event to benefit a cause of personal significance.

Additionally, we employ Make-Your-Mark grants in each office to encourage our employees to take action to achieve their personal philanthropic priorities by supporting a charity close to their hearts or homes. IMC employees nominate charities that they feel deserve the IMC Charitable Foundation’s support, and explain their recommendation. The local charity committee or office colleagues vote for the charities they feel are most deserving of support.

Sky High Trading & Finance Workshop

High school students got to try their hand at entrepreneurship and learn some of the fundamental concepts of trading as they operated “sandwich shops” in an activity that temporarily turned IMC’s break-out room into an open-cry exchange. Traders volunteered to be buyers and sellers of ingredients, and were impressed with students’ creativity as they figured out how to outdo the competition and make the most of their resources.

“I want to make meaningful contributions to help people, and to be allowed to do that through the workplace is fantastic.”Oswin, Sydney

ASIA-PACIFIC

VOLUNTEERING

Talk to any software developer at IMC, and they’ll have a story to share about someone who introduced them to their first line of code, and how that moment of inspiration changed their life. When we asked our developers how they felt they could best add value to students’ lives through the IMC Charitable Foundation, many told us they wanted to inspire others in the same way.

Through partnerships with local schools, IMC implemented after-school coding and robotics programs for students and coding training for teachers, laying the groundwork for the introduction of coding into class time in future years. More than 60 students visited IMC’s offices in 2016 to be mentored in coding by IMC staff.

Our long-term vision is to build a sustainable and scalable model providing training, introducing coding to the classroom and building interest clubs at schools so that all students have opportunities to learn these valuable skills.

The Prisma Foundation

Prisma (www.prismanet.nl) provides sports and cultural activities for around 1,400 people with cognitive disabilities in Amsterdam who are unable to join mainstream sports and other clubs. For a number of years IMC has financed sports activities, including swimming, fitness, horseback riding, and soccer, and in 2016 volunteers participated in cooking and bowling events.

“I do volunteer work because I like to help people and try to make their lives a bit brighter or easier. Volunteer work also serves as a good reminder to myself to appreciate what I have.”Boyka, Amsterdam

EUROPE Cooking in Another Kitchen

Throughout the year, IMC volunteers joined Cooking in Another Kitchen, serving hot meals to the homeless at Stoelenproject (www.stoelenproject.nl), a night shelter in Amsterdam. The project is run by Amsterdam Verbindt, an initiative aiming to bring the people of Amsterdam together to care for each other. It offers a safe shelter to around 45 homeless people from mid-September to May.

Hour of Code

UNITED STATES Gardening

Empty lots in Chicago can become sources of healthy food when local organizations set up community gardens and invite neighbors to care for a plot. IMC employees volunteered with the Peterson Garden Project (www.petersongarden.org) to plant crops in the spring and then harvest leftover herbs and vegetables in the autumn. Surplus fruits and vegetables were donated to a local soup kitchen, which used them to prepare nutritious meals for people in the community.

In Chicago, we devote time and resources throughout the year to hosting students in our office so that they can be exposed to a high-tech environment with a college-educated workforce. In December, for example, we hosted 45 students aged 10-13 for an Hour of Code (www.hourofcode.com), part of a global campaign to expand access to learning computer science and increase participation by women and underrepresented minorities. Each student team, working with an IMC employee, created an app.

“There is a visible excitement out of the students when they come to the office for the first time. You can tell that it motivates them to be more excited and more committed to learning and developing their skills.”Kevin, Chicago

ABOUT THE IMC CHARITABLE FOUNDATION

CONTRIBUTORS

HistoryThe growth and development of IMC’s Charitable Foundation mirrors that of IMC’s core trading business, which started in Amsterdam before expanding to Chicago and Sydney. In 1998, IMC was instrumental in launching IMC Weekendschool, in Amsterdam. Today Weekendschool provides supplementary, motivation-based teaching for more than 1,000 children at 10 locations in the Netherlands, and IMC remains among the project’s major benefactors and partners.

In Sydney, where IMC launched in 2002, we extended our commitment to young people by tailoring the approach to the unique needs in the community. We have established strong relationships with several charities that provide both academic support and experiential growth to students in and around Sydney.

In 2008, our Chicago office began taking action to help young people in the community develop to their fullest potential. We identified education as a key lever in this work because the public schools lack sufficient resources to meet the needs of a student population that is 80% low-income. Supporting schools, funding programs that teach life skills through sports and other experiences, and investing in education technology comprise our primary philanthropic focus in the United States today.

Charitable Status Each of IMC’s separate local charity foundations has the status of a registered charity in the region (Asia-Pacific, Europe, Unites States) in which it is active.

Board The IMC Charitable Foundation has a governance structure comprising a Global Charity Board and local charity teams operating in our three main regions: Asia-Pacific, Europe, and the United States. Our Global Charity Board comprises IMC co-CEOs Rob Defares and Wiet Pot, as well as the Managing Director of each IMC office: Brian Hitchcock (Asia-Pacific), Jan Willem Köhne (Europe), and Scott Knudsen (United States).

Local Charity Committees Local charity committees in each of our offices are responsible for advising on the implementation of our charity strategy. These teams, which include volunteers from all parts of IMC, stimulate engagement by employees by reviewing proposals for grants and organizing charity events. Larger grants are brought forward and reviewed by the Global Charity Board.
