First Trace

TEXT:This is a photo document of a soldier dragging out a fellow soldier who has been seriously injuredin times of battle. What I find to be the most unique about this photo is that it captures the moment of life

and death for a solider. Being brave enough to even fight for your country is one thing, but then having the

courage to risk everything you have to save someone else is beyond what I can truly imagine. This picture is

so special to me because it is the perfect example of the saying No man left behind. As seen in the picture,

the soldier being dragged out has been injured to the point where he can no longer stand and use his legs.

This photo is about the will to survive and the power of trust in one another.

READER:The intended audience for this picture is really aimed at anyone who is in a situation where they find themselves down andhave doubts about making it out. I am apart of this intended audience, maybe not in this exact situation displayed but there have been many

times in my life where I have been in a bad place and had to rely on the people around me to bail me out of my troubles. This picture has

opened me to change in a way that I had not seen before. What this photo means to me is that no matter how bad a situation could get, for

example a bomb exploding and losing the ability to walk, never give up hope and always believe there is a way out.

AUTHOR: This photo was found on the United States Army website. What caused this photo to be published was the strong messaged

it displays about trust in others. When you join the army you are not only fighting for our country but also joining a brother hood. They are

trying to show you how strong they are mentally and physically, you will not be betrayed or left to die. A credential that this picture

possesss is the confidence in trust and loyalty of soldiers.

CONSTRAINTS:Some limitations that this picture might have is a misunderstanding of reason. The person who took this pictureand put it on the website might have difficulty with the reader when it comes to figuring out what this photo means. The reason for this is

that the reader could take this picture many ways which might be what is intended, but one way the author does not want the reader to take

it is in the way of this is what will happen if you come to the army. Seeing a picture like this of a solider being dragged out while

wounded might effects someone who is nervous about getting hurt. In actuality the author is just trying to show the power of loyalty and

trust that the army displays. These constraints are visible through refutation because people may see this as an attack on their assertions and

consider this a negative image of the army even though that is not what the idea is truly for.

EXIGENCE:What caused this photo to be displayed is the well known fact that the army is a scary and dangerous work environmentto partake in. The involvement the author partakes in is to show that no matter how bad things could possibly get, there will always be

someone behind you who will do their best to get you out of every situation the same way you came in.

TEXT: This is a photo document. What I find to be extremely unique about this photo is the way that the Jew is standing up and staring

directly into Hitlers eyes. The time period that this photo was taken in was back during World War II. This is a special picture because it

displays courage and bravery of one person against all odds. This is a photo of a Jewish man who has been imprisoned due to Hitler

concurring Germany. The man is standing up tall staring straight into the eyes of the man who has probably killed his whole family and

plans to kill him. You can see in the background of the fence the rest of the prisoners all sitting down, hands folded over knees just

watching this man stand in front of Hitler and the guards.

READER: The intended audience for this would be anyone interested in World War II or anyone interested in major parts of history. I

fall into this audience because growing up in school I had to learn about the invasion of Hitler in Germany and I am familiar with a lot of

the things that happened to the Jews while they were in his camps. I am offered a change by this picture. In all my research I have never

read about a prisoner taking a stand. The picture may not look like a lot but just the way the prisoner is standing and staring into the eyes of

Hitler shows the inner power and strength people have with in themselves.

AUTHOR: Found this image on Play-Maker.com. Who ever posted this on the site had the purpose of sharing this crucial piece of

information for better understanding of what happened and to show people a different side of the holocaust hey might not have known

before. Some credentials this picture has is that it shows what people are made of even when they have nothing left to their name. This man

has been beaten and starved and instead of sitting down and being quiet like he was told, along with everyone in the background, he stands

up and stares down Hitler as he walks by.

CONSTRAINTS: The limitations this photo has is that the time period it was taken in was years ago that no one can tell you their

first person story. Anything you hear from the time this picture was taken until now has been passed down and re-written. Some limitations

that might occur when the reader is processing this picture is that they might not fully understand what is going on in the picture without

past knowledge of the holocaust or any events of the time period. These limitations are noticeable, simple because if you do not know

anything about World War II or Hitler, when someone views this photo they will just see a skinny man staring at a man with a suit, thats all

it will mean to them. People could rebuttal this picture by saying that the prisoner was not standing up to show how brave and powerful he

was, but possibly because hitler commanded him to stand up in order to kill him or set and example.

EXIGENCE: The holocaust is what caused this picture to be taken. What the photo is telling us is the inner strength of someone who

has been pushed down against their own will but refuses to stay down and take the beating. This photo will hopefully bring a positive

message to people and show them that it is never to late to give up and you should always stand up for yourself even when it seems

impossible.

TEXT: This is a photo document. What I find to be unique about this photo is that the solider is

somewhere in the desert but is still holding up the American flag and supporting his country. I find this

picture special because it symbolizes American pride and shows that the U.S. army will stop at no lengths to

protect us.

READER: The intended audience of this picture would be any American citizen who loves their country and has high respects for the

men and women who serve to protect us everyday. I am a big part in this intended audience because my uncle served in the United States

Army over seas for many years and honoring our country is a very big part of my family tradition. I think this picture and I represent son

similarities such as not giving up or losing hope for what you truly believe in. The power to stand tall at the end of the day and raise our

flag over a mountain shows tremendous courage and loyalty. I am not changed by this photo simply because I have always believed in what

this photograph is representing. Showing loyalty to our country is something I have grown up a custom to.

was prompted to post it in order to show respect and honor our troops who risk their lives everyday to protect us here in out country. Some

CONSTRAINTS: An obvious constraint about this photo right off the bat is that anyone who is not an American or a strong

supporter of our troops might not respect this picture in ways others do. Another limitation to this is that we do not know where exactly this

photo has been taken so we cannot be to sure as the reader that this wasnt just a staged photo. Regardless if it was staged or not as the

reader I still find it amazing and powerful. Limitations other readers might find is that this picture is small and a tad blurry, so you can

easily make out the flag and the soldier to understand what the photo is representing but possibly enlarging the picture or finding a clearer

copy would help people see what the publisher really wants people to notice.

EXIGENCE: What caused this picture to be taken and posted online was our love and support for our soldiers over seas and all

around our own country who continue to risk their lives in order to protect us from harm and war. The publisher of this photo is involved in

the army in many ways but I would have to say the number one reason this picture was posted is just a reminder to the public that we

should never give up hope. The army will always be there to protect us and raise our flag high with respect and power at the end of each

day.

Reflective Conclusion

EssayMany times in the past I have seen extremely long descriptions written out on a number of different subjects. Sometimes the more youwrite does not help people understand what you are trying to get across. Pictures can be very helpful when examining information in many

ways that written genres cannot provide. One of the many traits of a photo is that it is a visual. Everyone can take something from looking

at a photo and create their own thoughts and ideas based on what they have seen. Another wonderful aspect of a photo is that the artist or

publisher who delivers the picture can catch the attention of his intended audience quickly with the clever ways they choose to display their

image. Once a publisher captures the attention of the reader, their next step is to drive the audience to a specific topic. After the reader

figures out what the picture means to them, they tend to think about why this picture was taken or drawn to begin with. Pictures are

tremendously more personal to people than written texts because pictures can hold a symbolic meaning. A picture of firefighters in New

York City holding up the flag at ground zero after the World Trade Center attack of 2001 holds an extremely symbolic grip on the family

members who lost loved ones that day, as well as the rest of the country. As I stated previously, pictures can symbolize different things and

have more than one meaning depending on the viewer. For example, take that same picture of the firefighters holding up the flag. If

someone who lives in the Middle East were to see this picture, the symbolic message they would receive would be how strong America

really is in overcoming any situation that is handed to us. To understand the big picture of what every photo means (no pun intended) would

be impossible. Pictures are personal to different people and share numerous ideas.

Essay

The definition of power is simply the ability to do something in some way. What does that really mean though? Does that mean anybody

who does a simple task is powerful? The meaning of power is interpreted differently by different people. Some would say President

Barack Obama is powerful, and on the other hand, some would say Snooki of the television series Jersey Shore is powerful. Although these

two examples are very far from each other they are both correct examples of people who hold power. Barack Obama is powerful to many

because he is the President of the United States and as citizens of America we see him as a leader, although some people might disagree

with his views and see him as a threat. Snooki is powerful due to the mass amount of fame she has attracted on a popular television show,

although others might see her as a joke. The bottom line is to gain power you must be in a position where mass amounts of people will

listen to what you say and follow the actions you take.

EssayThe topic of power that I have selected to cover is the power of war. Most of my pictures are soldiers who are staying strong in their loyalty totheir country and fellow soldiers. There are, however, a few photos of Adolf Hitler taken during World War II where I discuss a different type of

power. I have discovered a few things in this project in the process of viewing photos and examining them for traces of power. One of the many

things I have found is that most of my pictures deal with the power of individual people and how staying true to yourself and your peers can

benefit you in the end. Another discovery I made during this process was taking note of two different types of power. One was power within

individuals and the other, power in numbers. An example of someone finding power within is the picture in my slide show of a Jewish man in a

concentration camp standing up at the fence staring Hitler straight in the eyes as he walked by. Everyone behind the man in the picture is sitting

down watching, while this brave man took a stand for himself against the person who probably has killed his whole family. Courage is powerful.

An example of power in numbers also involves Adolf Hitler. My slide show includes a representation of Hitler giving one of his many speeches.

You can see him standing over a crowd of thousands who are staring up at him and listening. Hitler had the power of numbers on his side and

was able to persuade his followers to do evil deeds. Adolf Hitler created an army and managed to kill off millions of people with the power of

numbers and followers he had. Discovering this aspect of the project made me realize that not all power is good, and many times power can lead

to a tremendous amount of trouble.

EssayI would like my audience to accept the material I have gathered to gain knowledge of war and soldiers, as well as the many different ways

power is represented within an army. When people think about the army they usually think Army Strong. That is the logo branded on our

U.S. Army. I wanted to show my audience that there is more to the army then just lifting weights, doing push-ups and shooting guns. I

wanted to provide a more in-depth look at the U.S. Army through a collection of photographs. These photographs display power in the

United States Army in times of crisis in various ways. Mixed in with power from our army, I used a few photographs from World War II

displaying what I call negative power and how it can be used to manipulate people to do the unthinkable. Overall I wanted to open the

minds of my audience and take them through a time of history and heartache with the examples of power through war.

EssayIt is hard for me to choose just a couple graphics that were personal to me because I found connections among many pictures I chose for

this project. The photograph of the soldier dragging a wounded soldier out of what looks to be the middle of combat really touched me

personally. The image shows a different side to the army. Instead of a soldier blowing something up with an enormous gun, he is sacrificing

his own life to save another fellow soldier who has lost the ability defend himself. This showed me that there was a lot more to the army

then I had originally thought. Through this photograph, I saw a type of brotherhood form between soldiers that I had not known existed.

The army was a team and they showed heart in this picture by never leaving a soldier behind no matter what the circumstances. The power

to not give up on one another is huge in a time of life and death. It also showed power in loyalty to his fellow soldier that this is more than a

job. Its your life. Another photograph that personally affected me was the picture of a soldier holding a young child closely to his chest as

if he was protecting it from an explosion, or possibly checking its heartbeat to make sure the young child was still breathing. This showed

me that there was more to the army than just kil ling. Seeing a soldier caring for another, rather than focusing on killing another, showed me

that there is a lot more going on in the army then what I had first thought. The power to love and care is displayed in this photograph.

EssayThe child looks to be bleeding at the leg and I cannot see any other part of his body. The soldier has the child wrapped in a blanket and held

close to keep comfort and stabilize the well-being of this child until further help can arrive. Another photo that almost made me shiver

when seeing it was the picture of an American soldier, in what looks to be a foreign desert, standing on top of a sandy hill holding up the

American flag. This photograph strikes me on a personal note because I am a strong believer and supporter of my country and to see a

soldier in full uniform holding up the nations flag after a victory showed me that we are strong and will not be stopped regardless of any

tough times we have to endure. The photograph also demonstrated a different type of power I have yet discussed in my project, the power

of having faith in ones country and being able to stand there tall and proud with our flag after seeing friends die in the war you have

fought. In addition to standing up for your own country, this picture represents the meaning that even though there is not an army behind

this man, that will not stop him from taking pride alone on that hill with the flag held high.

EssayThere were a ton of images in this project that were helpful to learning more about my topic of war and power. One of the most helpful

photographs I found throughout my process of discovery was a photo of soldiers entering a dangerous environment and making sure that

the first thing they did was get the small children to safety. Although I do not believe this picture was taken on American grounds, the

soldiers in the image below show tremendous power in understanding the difference between people who are risks to their lives and little

children of the country who need to be saved. It is not easy to enter a country full of people who want to see you killed in war and have the

ability and mindset to clear the children out of the way before the innocent get hurt. This taught me that although the soldiers had the ability

to kill everyone, they understood the innocence of the children which is power of respect and power to develop their instincts. Another

interesting picture that taught me something was the photograph of the man who stood in front of four massive army tanks to stand up for

what he believed in. This taught me that although everyone might want something to change or have something that is bothering them no

matter how big or small, your voice will never be heard if your actions do not reflect your words. The man in this image has obviously

taken a stance for what he believes and not only shows the power of freedom, but also the power of determination and valor. Seeing this

mans courage taught me that no matter what the issue is, if you disagree with a topic or procedure you have the ability to take a stand.

EssayThe image that benefitted my understanding the most would have to be the image of the two soldiers who are crouching down next to each

other in what looks to be a way of handling difficult situations after possibly losing a fellow soldier during a battle. This made me

understand that war is not just people shooting and kil ling, war isn't a win or lose type of deal. In times of combat, hundreds of soldiers die

on both sides of the battlefield. This pictured showed me that these individuals are more than just soldiers. They are people with feelings

just like me and you. The way this picture made me feel was different from all the rest. Seeing a soldier cry shows me that they are just as

human as I am. The only difference is they dont get to mope around for months and stay depressed. They have to be ready to fight the next

minute and lose more friends within the next second. This showed me the true power of losing someone you love in the name of defending

a great cause. It cannot be easy to see friends drop as often as these soldiers do and that made me understand in more depth the power to

not only defend our nation, but the power to stay strong and true to who these soldiers are as people.

EssayThe process of completing this project has taught me many things. The best part of this process has been breaking down sections and

completing them one at a time. If this project was handed to me in a check list form from day one, I would not have had a clue how to

begin my analysis. The way we eased into the project day-by-day and week-by-week made a difference not only in the amount of work I

was able to accomplish, but also in the quality of my work. Another benefit of this process was my ability to choose my own topic.

Although you (the teacher) gave us the general topic of Power, we (students) got to choose how we wanted to represent that topic. This

opened many doors from which to choose our ideas. The fact that I chose war to demonstrate power has taught me many things I did not

know before I started. My in-depth research revealed that there are many viewpoints beyond what may have been intended in the depiction

of power. This insight will affect the way in which I will approach projects in the future. For example, I will look at and study the material

from as many different viewpoints as I can, instead of treating a project with the mindset of one perspective. Overall, I picked up many

things from this project that I will continue to use and improve upon as time progresses.
