The NetBackup version model

• Major releases – single digit number ( e.g. 6.0, 7.0)

– Applied as full product builds allowing upgrade from a previous version or a fresh install

– The release date of a major release determines the EOSL date for all minor versions of that release

• Minor release – single dot version numbers (e.g. 7.1, 7.5)

– Applied as full product builds allowing upgrade from a previous version or a fresh install

• Feature supplements to major and minor releases – double dot version numbers (e.g. 7.0.1)

– Applied as an update to the previous major or minor version

• Patch releases – triple dot version numbers (e.g. 7.1.0.4, 7.5.0.5)

– Applied as an update to the previous version

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Why upgrade to the latest version of NetBackup?

• When a version of NetBackup is “end of support life” (EOSL) you can no longer log support cases for that version

• A product version goes EOSL 7 years after the GA release date of the major release

– NetBackup 6.0 was released on October 3rd 2005

– All versions of NetBackup 6.x reached EOSL on October 3rd 2012

– Only versions of NetBackup 7.x are currently supported

• Once a version goes EOSL you have two options:

1. Upgrade to a supported version

2. Take out a support extension

• Extensions are valid for 1 year beyond EOSL

• Extensions are chargeable – contact your account team for more details

NetBackup 6.5 is now “end of support life”

General best practices when upgrading

• Always check compatibility before upgrading

• Always upgrade to the latest version including the latest patch

– If there is a compatibility issue upgrade to the latest supported version and plan your server migration

• Plan the upgrade and factor in appropriate down time

• On master servers:

– Always make a full catalog backup with a retention of several months before you start the upgrade

– Disable backup policies

• Upgrade your systems in the correct order:

1. OpsCenter server

2. Master server

3. Media servers

4. Clients

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

A significant structural change in NetBackup 7.5

• Problem

– Over the last few releases new features have been added

– Image metadata has been split across two databases

– This impacts performance and scalability

– It also prevents us from adding further new features

• Solution

– We need to put all the image metadata into a single location

– We’re doing this in NetBackup 7.5

– Conversion occurs as part of the upgrade process

IM B11 – Upgrading to the latest NetBackup release 14

Catalog conversion?

Please! No!

Not NetBackup 6.0 all over again!

Not this time...

We’ll show you how.

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Catalog conversion occurs after the upgrade completes

• Catalog conversion occurs after the upgrade completes

• Conversion occurs in two “phases” which run in parallel – Phase 1

• Initiated automatically when the upgrade completes

• Migrates SLP controlled images and DSSU controlled images

– Phase 2

• Initiated automatically as part of the regular cleanup job

• Migrates image metadata and removes old files from image database

• Can be manually initiated with the command:

bpimage –cleanup –allclients

• The conversion process has been extensively tested with “real” catalogs containing up to 10,000,000 images

17 IM B11 – Upgrading to the latest NetBackup release

Page 18: IM B11 Upgrading to the latest NetBackup release B11_0.pdf · SYMANTEC VISION 2012 Agenda IM B11 – Upgrading to the latest NetBackup release 2 1 Where are you today? 2 General upgrade

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

How long is the migration going to take?

• The migration time depends on the number of images in your catalog

• Conversion runs at around 75 images per second on most master servers

• You can determine the number of images on your system by running the following command:

– On UNIX systems:

bpimagelist -idonly –d "01/01/1970 00:00:00" | wc -l

– On Windows systems:

bpimagelist -idonly –d "01/01/1970 00:00:00" | find.exe /C " ID: “

• Alternatively, obtain the migration_check tool from your BCAM or account SE

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Considerations when planning your upgrade

Determine the number of images in the catalog

Minimize SLP back log

Reduce DSSU content (if possible flush DSSUs)

Tune Sybase (server.conf)

Disable OpsCenter data collection

Disable backups and restores (if possible)

If you have a large catalog (> 1,000,000 images) use the “Guided” conversion method

Always apply the latest triple dot patch when you upgrade

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Things to Avoid During Catalog Conversion

• Do not run catalog backups while migration is in progress

• Do not run OpsCenter data collection while migration is in progress

• Minimize the use of query commands etc. while migration is in progress

• Minimize the running of backups and restore while migration is in progress

– During Phase 1 migration Capacity managed duplication and DSSU staging won’t run

Catalog Migration – Frequently asked questions

• What if my catalog is inconsistent?

– Corrupt image headers will be moved to the db.corrupt directory

– These images will not be migrated

• Can I stop the phase 2 migration and restart it?

– The cleanup job that is migrating the images can be cancelled and the next cleanup job will continue where it left off

– You can also manually start a cleanup job

• How do I know if the migration has completed? – Use the nbemmcmd –listsettings on the master server

• Phase 1 migration has completed when SLP_DSSU_MIGRATION_STATE is set to "1“

• Phase 2 migration has completed when LIST_FS_IMAGE_HEADERS is set to “0”

Catalog Migration – Can I see it running?

• How can I tell how far the migration has got?

http://www.symantec.com/docs/DOC5198

IM B11 – Upgrading to the latest NetBackup release 24

Phase 2 migration can be seen in the cleanup job in the job monitor

SYMANTEC VISION 2012

Review/update your disaster recovery plan

• Partial catalog recovery process has changed:

– Image “dotf” files are restore to the catalog

– Relational database is restored to the staging area

– Image meta-data must be exported and imported:

• cat_export –all –staging –source_master <source master server>

• cat_import –all

– Do this before running:

• nbcatsync –backupid

– On an average catalog is adds 3-4 hours to the recovery time

• Partial catalog replication is more complex:

– Image meta-data must be periodically exported, replicated and imported when needed

– Partial catalog replication is NOT recommended for 7.5 and above
