INTEGRATION OF THE YOUTH SECTORIN ILOILO CITY LOCAL GOVERNANCE

June 19, 2010Iloilo Provincial CapitolILONGGO YOUTH AGENDA PAPER

SCAP Iloilo City Chapter has been an entity to reckon with in the previous election with thelaunching of the First Time Voters’ Project (FTV) in Iloilo City last August 29, 2009. Engaginggovernment agencies such as the Comelec and the National Youth Commission, SCAP Iloilo Citywas at the forefront of voters’ registration and education campaign in campuses andcommunities.

Allied with local organizations such as the Movement for the Advancement of Student Power, Task Force Pride, Akbayan! Youth among others, SCAP Iloilo City now tasks itself to maximizeyouth participation in local governance and transformative politics.

The struggle for the youth sector for maximum participation in politics and governance has beenetched in the country’s history. Youth movements during the Spanish, American and Japanese

eras and during EDSA Revolutions 1 and 2 showcased that young people have always been in theforefront of transformative struggles.

With the closure of the 2010 elections and the installation of the new administration, thechallenges for the youth continue beyond the polls. SCAP’s intention of maximizing youthparticipation stretches to local governance with the collectivization of separate youth andstudent movements into one progressive force.

Below are the results of the consultation among more than seventy (70) youth andstudent leaders coming from more than twenty (20) youth organizations. Theseresults will serve as one among many materials for local city officials in integratingthe youth sector, the largest stakeholder of Iloilo politics, into local governance.
