ILLUSTRATION (COMMUNICATION ART) WHAT IS ILLUSTRATION? Illustration is all about two things: beautiful artwork and effective visual communication. Illustration, therefore, is a creative discipline defined by purpose rather than media. Illustrators may work in any combination of media or style imaginable from realistic oil paintings to highly stylised digital characters; it’s all about telling a story and doing so through creative, arresting artwork. Illustration is prevalent in almost all forms of printed and digital media, far from being a niche area, illustration is a broad and exciting field. Illustration may be seen in books, graphic novels, album artwork, newspapers, magazines, posters, websites, concept artwork for animations, films and games, advertising, surface design for products, exhibition and community arts.
