Board of Directors Meeting MinutesIllinois Angus Association - 12/15/14

The December meeting of the Illinois Angus Association Board of Directors meeting was held at the Northfield Inn & Suites in Springfield on Dec. 15, 2014. The meeting was called to order by President Kevin Rose at 10:35 a.m. Members present were: Anne Ruyle-Chaffin, Alan Miller, Brett Par, Doug Turner, Kevin Rose, Kevin Eathington, Lee Stremsterfer, Richard Hurst, John DeRycke, Ryan Schlipf, Trevor Kuipers, Carla Jurgenson, Tyler Schleich, Greg McClure, Sheri Adcock, Garrett Lampe, Aaron Schafer, Keith Kramer, Jim Marsh, and Casey Jentz. Members absent Cheryl Day, Luke Lemenager, Robb Fanning, Scott Anderson, Tyler Rhode, Gary Simpson, and John Kirchner. We had two special guests in attendance Reid Blossom and Jill Johnson from the Illinois Beef Association (IBA).

The minutes were presented and a motion to approve was made by Trevor Kuipers and seconded by Greg McClure. The motion carried. Doug Turner gave the business manager’s report. He informed the group that there is the possibility that the Association could have a financial loss of around $1,500 for the year. Partially due to $500 higher expenses than expected. A motion to approve the report was made by Kevin Eathington and seconded by Alan Miller.

The Sale Committee report was given by Lee Stremsterfer. The committee brought to the board for approval rule changes that they would like to see made to the eligibility requirements for the Illinois Angus Futurity. They are as follows:

1. First line: take out the word “bred”. Should now read – Only an animal which is Illinois born, and… 2. Second bullet point referring to ET: Delete the first sentence. Should now read – conditions are met: “The animal resulting… 3. Under Spotlight Eligible Heifers: Change date to Dec. 31, 2014 (This will already be out of date once the 2015 sale is over, and we will need to update these each year) 4. Add the following: All potential carriers of known genetic defects must be tested. 5. Update the Revised date to December 2014

The motion to approve the rule changes was made by Kevin Eathington and seconded by Tyler Schleich. The motion passed.

Greg McClure gave the Show committee report. He informed the board that Andrew Foster will be our Judge at the Illinois Angus Futurity.

The Finance Committee report was given by Carla Jurgenson. Her committee reviewed the finances as presented by Doug

Turner and recommended their approval. Carla Jurgenson made the motion. It was seconded by Aaron Schafer and passed.

The future of the Illinois Angus News was discussed by the board. Ernie Bingman informed President Rose that his company would no longer be the publisher of the magazine. Reid Blossom and Jill Johnson, of the IBA, were involved with the conversation. This item was tabled for discussion at a later time. There was no report from the Promotion, Banquet, or Nominating Committees.

Sherry Adcock told us the details of the most resent junior board meeting. The American Angus Association has approached our juniors about either co-sponsoring the 2018 National Junior Angus Show with the Wisconsin juniors or hosting the Eastern Regional Show in 2017. Casey Jentz represented the American Angus Association. He informed us of the successful annual convention held in Kansas City, Mo. Reid Blossom gave the IBA report. He informed the board about the IBA’s desire to reestablish the Illinois Beef Checkoff. This money would be used to help fund educational opportunities. They are asking for a $.50/head checkoff. The IBA believes that this would equal around $300,000 in additional money. They are asking for the official support of the Illinois Angus Association. This was made into a motion by Ryan Schlipf and seconded by Trevor Kuipers. The motion passed unanimously.

Old Business was not addressed or discussed.

In New Business:Lee Stremsterfer brought to the board’s attention that the Land of Lincoln Livestock Breeders Association is looking to change their requirements as to what is considered Land of Lincoln eligible. The IAA board decided to send a letter of support to have eligibility be 7/8 purity or higher to be allowed to sell in the Land of Lincoln Champions sale at the Illinois State Fair. This motion was made by Garrett Lampe and seconded by Carla Juregenson. Motion carried. Ernie Bingman has made a request to be allowed out of his current contract with the Illinois Angus Association. He still owes the IAA $500 for the last month’s publication. Alan Miller made a motion to allow Mr. Bingman out of his contract. Brett Parr made the second and the motion passed. Doug Turner told the board that the showring for the Illinois Beef Expo Junior Show would be changed this year. The ring will be split in half the length of the ring. Heifers will show on the east side and Steers on the west.

A motion to adjourn was made by Alan Miller and seconded by Keith Kramer. All were in favor. The meeting adjourned at 12:30 p.m..
