There are 700 names, dated and cross-indexed forconvenience, and most have the locality from which theycame.

At times the faded handwriting was hard to inter-pret. There may be differences as to the interpretationof some.

This was undertaken in an attempt to preserve therecords and to make them available to many who areinterested in the early years at Mad.etta.

In 1788, Washington County included nearly half of the present stateof Ohio. In 1797 other counties were formed. Middletown and Newtown aretownships no longer in Washington County.

The office of Probate Judge existed in 1789 under the territorialform of government and the office was held by governmental appointment.The officers were appointed by the governor. (Thomas J. Summers' Historyof Marietta)

The first marriage recorded according to an old newspaper clipping inCampus Martius Museum is that of Hon. Winthrop Sargent and Rowena Tupperwho were married Feb. 6, 1789. John Sparks, who searched thru some oldnewspapers, found the item.

The first marriage in book one in Probate Court is that of John Whiteand Presilla Devol. An examole taken from the book is as follows:
