I think that thedefendant is entitled to have the ordersin question annexed to the petition, under the provisions of sections 1100and 1102 of the Civil Code. Such orders

of labor. It is very evident that thework of attending to applicants at thewindow during the two or three hoursimmediately prior to the departure ofthe mail steamer for the Coast is toomuch lor one clerk. If the PostmasterGeneral could see his way clear to giveadditional facilities on those occasions,h iving special reference to the rusli ofbusiness, we believe it would be advan-tageous to the public and the depart-ment. Either the entire duties of thepresent clerks might be divided as theyare, or one window might be reservedfor the sale of stamps solely and exclu-sively, other things, such as weighingletters, answering inquiries, etc., beingtransferred. When people are underthe necessity of waiting ten, fifteen ortwenty minutes before they can beaerved, it scarcely admits of argumentthat some change is urgently needed. -

Ifit had been alleged that the defendant, being the owner or consignee or theauthorized agent of the owner or con-signee of the liquors in question, hadwithdrawn them without securing orpaying the duties payable on them, inthat case I think it is clear that debtwould be the proper form of the action.(United States vs. Lyman, 1 Mason,481.) til res Congregate --Some Cheap Places.Kocha is a Hebrew word signifying

"clean," and a kocha restaurant is one wherehc Mosaic law regarding the preparation offood is observed to the letter. There are sev-r- al

of these places in Now York, all of themwell patronized, for a strictly orthodox Jewseldom eats elsewhere away from his owntable.

The Dalmonico of the Israelites is Lustig. His restaurant is on Mercer street, in theheart of the dry goods district, and his chefis a German Jew. Herfe at midday thewealthy Hebrews of the vicinity congregatefor luncheon. For forty cents an admirablemeal is served in the German style of cook-ing. It consists of several courses, barleyor chicken soup, boiled beef or Hamburgersteak, with fried jotatoes and sauerkraut, veal cutlet, roast duck or broiled chicken, with salad, and a compote of prunes anilraisins or some delicate pastry. A dish ofthe choicest fruit and a jar of celery standsalways on the table. A small cup of blackcoll'ee completes the meal. No butter isserved with the bread. No milk or milkproduct is allowed in the restaurant, theMosaic law expressly forbidding the eatingof milk and meat in any form at the sametime. For this reason the Jew drinks hiscofTee clear or abstains from it altogether.

At noonday Lustig's is always crowdedwith Hebrews of a distinctively Germantype. A spirit of jollity pervades the place, and for a time all thought of business is castaside. This is especially true on feast days, when, the menu is considerably amplified. On such occasions poultry of all kind isserved; turkeys, ducks, chickens, geese, t nipe, juail, whatever fowl is in season can be hudresh, and cooked deliciously with herbs and

spices. On fast days Lustig's and all thstrictly kocha' restaurants are closed.

On the great east side of the city, in Essex,Norfolk, Ludlow and adjoining streets, thereare many so called kocha restaurants. Theyare kocha, however, only in name, as the ser-vice is filthy and the food scarcely tit to eat.Any one passing through the Jewish quartermay see them. They are mostly small roomsin the cellars or upon the ground floors oftenements, furnished with a few woodentables and chairs, with a bill of fare, printedin Hebrow characters, hanging outside ihedoor. In the windows the shrunken car-casses of geese are allowed to hang untilblackened with exposure.

A substantial meal, such as it is, can bepurchased in any of these places lor fromeight to fifteen cents. A favorite dish herois a fish stew, strongly flavored with garli'?and redolent with odor. A strictly orthodoxHebrew would turn in horror from such res-taurants, for the underlying principle of theMosaic law concerning food is cleanliness.New York Evening Sun.

Oftentimes disease, or partially de

pepsia. His story of how he went fromone physician to another in search of acure that his wife and little ones mightnot come to want is very patiietic andtouching. Finally he became too ill tokeep his situation and had to give it up.This was a sad calamity. He was appalledto think of how he should be able to live. But God raised up friends who helped tokeep the wolf from the door. He thenwent to the seaside at Walton e,

hut neither the change, nor the physicianswho treated him there, did any good. Allbeing without avail he visited London, with a sort of vague hope that some ad-

vantage might happen to him intlie me-tropolis. This was in October, 1885.

How wonderful, indeed, are the ways ofProvidence, which dashes down our high-est hopes and then helps us when we leastexpect it.

While in London, he stated his conditionto a friend, who strongly advised him totry a medicine which he called Mother.Seigel's Curative Syrup, saying it was gen-uine and honest, and often cured wheneverthing else had failed. He bought abottle of a chemist in Pimlico, and beganusing it according to the directions. Hedid this without any faith or hope, andthe public may, therefore, judge of hissurprise and pleasure when after taking afew doses he felt grett relief. He could eatbetter, liis food distressed him less, thesymptoms we have named abated, thedark spots which had floated before hieyes like smuts of soot gradually disap-peared, and his strength increased. Beforethis time his knees would knock togetherwhenever he tried to walk. So encouragedwas he now that he kept on using MotherSeigel's Curative Syrup until it ended incompletely curing him.

In speaking of his wonderful recoveryMr. Richold says it made him think ofpoor Robinson Crusoe, and his deliver-ance from captivity on his island in thesea; and added, "But for Mother SeigelVCurative Syrup the grass would now begrowing over my grave."

Our readers can rest assured of the stricttruth of all the statements in this most re-

markable case, as Mr. Richold (now resid-ing at Swiss Cottage, Walton-on-the-Naze- ,)

An Irreligious Mussulman.Osman's chief characteristic is a reel; less

disregard for the conventionalities of sociallife and religion; he never seems to totherhimself about either washing his person orsaying his prayers. Somewhere. rot faraway, every evening the faithful are sum-moned to prayer by a muezzin with the mostmusical and pathetic voice I have heard inall Islam. The voice of this muezzin calling"Allah-il-A-l-l-a-- h" as it comes floating overthe houses and gardens in the calm silence ofthe summer evenings is wonderfully im-pressive.

From the pulpits of all Christendom I haveyet to hear an utteranco so full of pathosand supplication or that carries with it thoimpressions of such deep sincerity as the

"Allah-il-A-l-l-a-- h" of this Afghan muezzmin the Herat valley. It is a supplication tothe throne of grace that rings in my parseven as I write months after, and it touchestho heart of every Afghan within hearingand taps the fountain of their pietymagic. It calls forth responsive prayers andpious sighings from everybody around mybungalow everybody but Osman. Osnvmcan scarcely be called imperturbable, for hhas his daily and hourly moods and is ofvarying temper, but he carries himself al-

ways as though conscious of being an outcastwhom nothing can either elevate or detile. When his fellow Mussulmans are piouslyprostrating themselves ami uttering religioussighs sincere as fanaticism can make themOsman is either curied up benea cb a pome-granate bush asleep, feeding the horse or at-

Tobacco in Venezuela. An impression seems to prevail abroad that

the ladies of Venezuela, being direct descend-ants of the Spaniards, are great smokers. Ihave made particular inquiries, but havefound the contrary to be the case. How couldit be different ? The caraquennas show suchexcellent taste and so much refinement thatthey could not possibly stoop to such vices. It seems, however, that certain elderly ladiesoccasionally enjoy a good cigar when amongthemselves, but never in the society of gentle-men. Probably they would indulge in it alittle more if cigars and tobacco weiv betterin Venezuela. But there are no good cigarsto be had.

The native tobacco, although grow?i inlarge quantity, is far below the average, andHavana cigars are very exiensive. Of ciga-rettes, American or Turkish are almost un-known, and but those of Havana moke ereused!. Among the women of the lower classescigarette smoking is far more common, andwomen of a certain, or, to express it moreplainly, of an uncertain, age indulge a greatdeal in cigar smoking. A curious and verygeneral habit among them is smoking cigarsinverted, with the burning end inside thymouth. I have seen tjiis frequently in theWest India Islands, at Curacao, and o rnongthe women of Venezuela, but I never r.ouVedmen indulging in this risky practice. Theysay cigars taste much better if smoked in thisway, but I must leave it to the readers to'.o--
