Weather

English speakers love to talk about the weather. It is a way of breaking theice(starting a conversation). People talk about the weather on the phone and inperson. Friends and family talk about the weather before they discuss what'snew. Co-workers talk about the weather before starting a hard day of work. Evenstrangers discuss the weather. Learn the proper vocabulary and expressions, andyou will find it easy to start a conversation anytime and anywhere with anyone

you meet!



Useful words in alphabetical order:

below freezing t`s supposed to go below freezing this weekend.

blizzard The airplane couldn`t take off because of the blizzard.

boiling hot It was boiling hot in August.

breeze There is always a breeze near the ocean.

chilly It`s a bit chilly today, you better wear a sweater.

cloudy It may look cloudy,but the sun will come out later on.

degrees It`s about minus 10 degrees tonight.

drizzling You don`t need a raincoat. It`s only drizzling now.

fog/foggy We couldn`t see the bridge because it was too foggy.

forecast According to the forcast,it will be very windy tomorrow.

freezing cold It was freezing cold last night.

hail Hail destroyed my car.

heat-wave During the hear-wave we cooled our beds with ice packs.

humid/humidity It was very humid in the last two days.

Icy The roads are icy so please be careful.

Overcast The sky is overcast this morning.

partly cloudy Tomorrow`s forecast is partly cloudy with a light drizzle.

rain/rainy/raining It´s been rainy all day.

raining cats and dogs It`s no fun walking around when it`s raining cats and dogs.

snow/snowy/snowing We are expecting snow in the next 2 days.

Sunburn I got an awful sunburn on my back.

suntan/tanned You look so tanned. Have you been on holiday?





Margo: Oh geez, you’re drenched! It wasn’t supposed to rain today.

Ali: I know. I looked at the weather report last night and it was supposed to be a nice

day. That’s the last time I trust those weathercasters! I hate getting caught in the

rain. I’m soaking wet.

Margo: When I felt a raindrop on my head this morning, I should have known that we

were in for a big rainstorm. Right then, I should have gone back into my house to get

an umbrella, but as usual, I was running late.

Ali: I can’t believe I have to go out on sales calls today. I’m not looking forward to

getting back in my car when it’s raining cats and dogs out there.

Margo: Somebody in this office must have an umbrella you can borrow for the day. I’ll

go see.

Ali: Thanks. It looks like it’s only drizzling now. Maybe it’s letting up.

Margo: Don’t count on it. It’ll be pouring again in a minute. Let me see if I

can round up an umbrella and maybe even a raincoat.

Ali: Thanks. I’ll be in the bathroom wringing out my clothes. What a miserable day!

Winter Weather

I grew up in Minnesota where the summers are hot and humid and winters

are bitterly cold. Living in Los Angeles now, it's sometimes hard to describe topeople how winter weather can be in chillier climates. In L.A. most of the year, theweather is sunny, clear , and warm. In one of my favorite movies, LA Story ,the weathercaster pre-recorded his weather forecasts because the weather wasthe same everyday!

Well, that's an exaggeration, because even in L.A., it can sometimes be quite cool inthe winter and some areas around the beaches can have dense fog andoccasionally drizzling. But, that's nothing compared to Minnesota. In winter, they getsnow flurries and blizzards, when as much as 3 feet of snow can fall. As I kid, Iwould build snowmen and make angels on the ground. That part was fun. But Ialso froze my buns off !

And, of course, one thing that Minnesota has a lot of in the wintertime is snow.Sometimes, we get so many inches of snow, we have to shovel and plow our wayout of our houses. The worst is when there is freezing rain and sleet and the roadsare slippery. Needless to say, there are a lot of fender benders on the road withthis kind of weather. Luckily, Minnesota doesn't get any hurricanes that far north, butother parts of the country are hard hit by those every year.

Well, I have to say that it's nice not to have to scrape ice off my windshield in the

mornings, but I do miss the white Christmases.

In Seattle, it will be rainy and windy tomorrow morning with rain falling

until late in the afternoon. On the east side of the mountains in Spokane,

the sun will shine and temperatures will reach 30 degrees Celsius. In the

evening, the weather will become windy and cloudy. In the mountains,

you can expect snow above 2,000 meters.
