A soli 20 km da Bergamo e 60 da Milano, l’Altipiano si concede facilmente ai suoi ospiti. Dal capoluogo, dove si trovano le stazioni di treni e bus, l’autostrada A4 e l’aeroporto internazionale di Orio al Serio, il percorso in auto o in autobus è davvero breve. Ma L’Altipiano può contare anche sul collegamento al fondovalle, in soli 8 minuti, grazie a una panoramicissima funivia: ecco il vanto di iniziare una vacanza con stile!

Located just 20 km from Bergamo and 60 km from Milan, the Plateau indulges its guests. It is only a short car or bus ride away from the main city, where you can fi nd the train and bus stations, the A4 freeway and the Orio al Serio international airport. It can also count on a direct link with the bottom of the valley, through a panoramic cableway which takes just 8 minutes: there is no better way to start.

L’Altipiano narra miti di antichi sentieri e passaggi di uomini in armi o pacifi ci; a raccontare di come nacque il borgo di Selvino intervengono gli storici: intorno all’anno Mille, Salvino Grittis fuggì da Bergamo, scossa dalle discordie civili, raggiunse l’Altipiano e costruì un villaggio che prese il suo nome. Nei secoli l’abitato crebbe in popolazione ed ebbe economia fl orida. A partire dal secolo scorso, gli abitanti di Selvino seppero, con intraprendenza, cogliere la bellezza del luogo e individuarono nel turismo il loro futuro. Diedero inizio così alla lunga tradizione d’accoglienza che fa oggi di Selvino una delle località più amate delle Orobie.

The Plateau narrates tales of ancient footpaths trodden by fi ghters and men of peace; historians tell us how the village of Selvino was founded: around the year 1000, Salvino Grittis fl ed from Bergamo, which was rocked by a civil discord; he reached the Plateau and built a village which took after his name. Over the years, the population of the village grew and the economy fl ourished. In particular, during the last century, our citizens began to use their great spirit of initiative to promote the beauty of the area carving out a future in the fi eld of tourism. This gave rise to the long tradition of hospitality which today makes Selvino one of the most-loved localities in the Orobic Alps.

Appena preso il versante dell’Altipiano che scende verso la Val Serina si incontrano Rigosa e Sambusita. Sono due delle frazioni che compongono il Comune di Algua, paese dalla storia complicata, che oggi raccoglie anche le frazioni di Pagliaro e Frerola. Curiosamente il suo territorio è diviso a metà e, nel punto più vicino, le due parti distano quasi 2 km. Il suo nome deriva semplicemente da “acqua”: la zona è ricchissima di sorgenti e torrenti, tanto da essere tra le principali fornitrici dell’acquedotto di Bergamo. Nel 1888 una frana chiuse il corso del torrente Serina e formò un suggestivo laghetto, ancora oggi esistente.

On the side of the Plateau which descends towards the Serina Valley, we reach Rigosa and Sambusita. These are two small villages which form the Municipality of Algua, a town with a complicated history, which now also incorporates the little towns of Pagliaro and Frerola. Oddly, its territory is divided in halves and the two parts, at their closest point, are almost 2 km apart. Its name derives simply from “acqua” (water): the area is full of springs and torrents, making it one of the main suppliers of Bergamo’s aqueduct. In 1888, a landslide blocked the course of the Serina torrent and formed a charming little lake, which can still be seen today.

Furono i Celti, col loro passaggio, a segnare l’inizio della storia di Aviatico, il cui nome signifi ca “viandante”. Collocato in una posizione riservata, il borgo visse secoli di tranquillità e da esso nacquero le frazioni di Ama, Amora e Ganda. Le prime due portano nel nome la loro origine di luoghi di rifugio costruiti dai pastori: Amaca nei secoli divenne Ama e Dimora mutò in Amora. Diversa, invece, l’origine di Ganda - in celtico “gant” e cioè “frana” - che nacque sulle pendici della Cornagera, sbriciolate da un antico terremoto. Aviatico deve il suo soprannome di “paese da fi aba” al bellissimo paesaggio e alle sue ricchezze naturali che non conoscono stagioni.

It was the passage of the Celts that marked the beginning of Aviatico’s history, a name that means “wayfarer” .Situated in an outer position, the village enjoyed centuries of serenity and spawned small towns such as Ama, Amora and Ganda. The names of the fi rst two reveal their origins as places of refuge built by shepherds: over the centuries, Amaca (hammock) became Ama and Dimora (dwelling place) became Amora. A different origin can be attributed to Ganda - “gant” in Celtic, meaning “landslide” – which was founded on the mountainsides of Cornagera, devastated by an ancient earthquake. Aviatico owes its nickname of the “fairy-tale village” to its beautiful landscape and natural richness, which can be admired all year round.

Il monte Purito che giunge con un suo versante a lambire il centro abitato di Selvino è attrezzato d’estate come un immenso parco verde, mentre d’inverno diviene uno spettacolare stadio del bianco.

Il monte Poieto domina il paese di Aviatico a cui è collegato anche da una divertente cabinovia. Offre ampi spazi, giochi per bambini, la riserva dei daini e un ristorante di grande effetto panoramico.

La Cornagera, fatta di canaloni e pareti, offre un’importante palestra di roccia e incredibili panorami che spaziano dalla alte vette bergamasche fi no alle Alpi e poi sulla valle fi no alla pianura.

Monte Purito which touches the village centre of Selvino; it is an immense green park in the summer, and a spectacular stadium of snow throughout the winter.

Monte Poieto dominates the village of Aviatico, to which it is also linked via an enjoyable cableway. It offers wide-open spaces, playgrounds for children, a deer reserve and a restaurant of great panoramic effects.

The Cornagera, with its gullies and cliffs, offers an important rock climbing wall and incredible panoramas, which sweep from Bergamo’s highest peaks to the Alps and from the valley to the plain.

Punteggiano le radure dell’Altipiano: i caratteristici roccoli, postazioni dei tempi in cui la caccia era, più che un lusso, una necessità, oggi sono preziosissimi punti d’osservazione per studi ornitologici.I misteri del cielo. L’osservatorio Astronomico delle Prealpi Orobiche, a 1200 m. sulle pendici del monte Poieto, ha un potente telescopio che di notte spinge l’occhio fi no a 350 milioni di anni luce tra le stelle e di giorno permette l’osservazione del sole in luce bianca.

These structures are dotted around the Plateau’s open spaces: the characteristic bird snares, date back to times when hunting was a necessity more than a luxury. Today, they are valuable observation points for ornithological studies.The mysteries of the sky. The Orobic Alps Astronomical Observatory, at an altitude of 1200 m on the slopes of Monte Poieto, has a powerful telescope that, by night, magnifi es the stars 350 million light years away and, by day, allows the observation of the sun in white light.

La storia dell’Altipiano è legata allo sci alpinismo di altissimo livello. Fu qui che, agli inizi del ‘900, i pionieri di questo sport meraviglioso trovarono un habitat ideale e partirono alla conquista dello sci mondiale. Con la fondazione dello Sci Club nel 1952, Selvino divenne inesauribile fucina di campioni e in mezzo secolo ha regalato alla Nazionale ben 23 atleti, tra cui le medaglie d’oro olimpiche Paola Magoni, Deborah Compagnoni e Daniela Ceccarelli. Lo Sci club è il grande vanto di Selvino, ha un ineguagliabile albo d’oro che gli è valso il massimo riconoscimento del Coni, la stella d’oro al merito. La sua Scuola sci è classifi cata tra le migliori d’Italia per l’avviamento dei bambini, gestisce nel periodo estivo la pista di pratica su erba e nel periodo invernale la pista con innevamento artifi ciale.

The history of the Plateau is linked to downhill skiing at the highest level. It was here, at the beginning of the 1900s, that the pioneers of this wonderful sport found their ideal environment and set out to conquer the world of skiing. With the foundation of the Ski Club in 1952, Selvino became an inexhaustible breeding ground of champions and over the last half-century has provided the national team with 23 skiers, including Olympic gold medallists Paola Magoni, Deborah Compagnoni and Daniela Ceccarelli. The Ski Club is the pride and joy of Selvino; it boasts an unparalleled roll of honour which has earned it the Italian Olympic Committee’s highest award, the gold star of merit. Its ski school is amongst the fi nest in Italy in terms of training children; in the summer, it offers a practice slope on grass, and in winter an artifi cially snow covered slope.

Sono tanti i fatti, gli eventi e i personaggi che hanno fatto la storia e la cultura delle nostre comunità. Dall’arte del grande pittore Enea Gherardi, detto “il Talpino” o il “Raffaello Bergamasco”, fi glio di questa terra, fi no alla storia dell’eroe garibaldino Daniele Piccinini (che qui aveva casa). Fa parte della cultura anche la speranza che la casa di Sciesopoli seppe restituire a un migliaio di bimbi ebrei orfani, sopravvissuti ai campi di sterminio. E poi ci sono i luoghi della fede: le chiese e i santuari dell’Altipiano raccontano l’essenza di un territorio ricco di spiritualità e amore per l’arte. Le parrocchiali, ricche di opere di eccellenti artisti, come le cappelle medievali sono l’ineguagliabile corollario di uno dei più antichi santuari della bergamasca, quello dedicato alla Madonna del Perello.

There are many historical facts, events and important people which have contributed to the history and culture of our community. From the art of the great painter Enea Gherardi, known as “il Talpino” or the “Raphael of Bergamo”, a native of the area, to the history of the heroic follower of Garibaldi, Daniele Piccinini (who had a house here). Another part of this culture is the hope that the house of Sciesopoli was able to give safety to thousands of orphaned Jewish children, survivors of the concentration camps. Then we have the places of faith: the churches and sanctuaries of the Plateau narrate the essence of a territory rich in spirituality and of a love for art. The churches, abounding in works by excellent artists, like the medieval chapels, are the peerless corollary of one of the oldest sanctuaries in the province, the one dedicated to the Madonna del Perello.
