Let’s talk the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration, OK? As time goes on, I get asked more and more about what’s happen-ing. The Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration will held Wednes-day, April 16th through Sunday April 20th in two locations on the same days. Those locations are Charlotte Motor Speedway and Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Celebrating in two locations will allow many more Mustang enthusiasts to celebrate the 50th with us! Here are some of the things that are being discussed and asked about right now that we can share with you.

Who Can Attend the Mustang50th Birthday Celebration?

The Mustang Club of America is honored to be hosting the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration and is dedicated to making sure that all Mustang enthusiasts, vendors and supporters of the Mustang, all past, present and future models, have a place at the Celebration. Also, that everyone is welcome, even people who are not Mustang owners but who may have another Ford con-nection. With that thought, although we would really appreciate you becoming an MCA member or a sponsor of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration, to attend, bring your Mustang or par-ticipate in any of the planned events, you will not have to be an MCA member. All clubs and groups associated with the Ford Mustang will be welcomed. However, there may be some special events put on by different clubs or groups in attendance that may require your membership in their club or organization to partici-pate in their portion of the Celebration.

Why Two Locations Instead of Just One?When the Mustang Club of America took on the responsibility of hosting the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration, one of the things everyone wanted was for as many Mustang enthusiasts, clubs, vendors and organizations as possible to be able to attend and celebrate this once in a lifetime event. Since the past Mustang Anniversary Shows had all been held in the east, this made in-volvement from enthusiasts and other people and organizations in the west very expensive; both in travel cost and travel time. Also, many Mustang enthusiasts from the west wanted their Mustang to be at the Celebration and it just wasn’t possible. Be-cause of this, many Mustang enthusiasts and others felt left out of the past Mustang Anniversary Shows. When the MCA started looking at how best to serve all Mustang enthusiasts and every-one associated with the Ford Mustang, we looked long and hard at having a single Celebration in the center of the United States. We concluded that doing that would only keep a lot of enthusi-

asts from the east away and wouldn’t be enough of a change to encourage many enthusiasts from the west to attend. We also looked at holding one Celebration in the west but that would put those from the east in the same position as we were trying to cor-rect for those enthusiasts from the west. Therefore, the two show Celebration was adopted because it was the best way we could see to encourage as many enthusiasts to attend. We hope that will include you and your many Mustang friends!

Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration Pony Drives:Before I talk about the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration’s Pony Drives, let me say this. If you are wanting to go from your home to the closest Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration location but want to travel with other Mustang enthusiasts, be sure to check with the local Mustang clubs in your area. Many of them will be putting together caravans to both locations the week of the 50th Celebration. You can meet with them and travel as a part of their group. If, on the other hand, you’re wanting the full experience of driving on a Pony Drive for a longer distance with other Mustang enthusiasts and attending many different shows and meets along the way, then the Mustang 50th Birthday Cele-bration’s Pony Drives are designed for you! So read on.

The beginning of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration will be the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration’s Pony Drives. The Pony Drives will be cross-country driving events which will take place the week before the offi cial dates of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration. The week before the start of the Mustang 50th Birth-day Celebration, we are planning a huge Mustang Pony Drive to bring everyone who participates in it together at a location near Mustang, Oklahoma. The actual location, hotels, events and hun-dreds other details are still being fi nalized and everything will be reported in a future update. Mustang is just a few miles south of Oklahoma City so I’ll use it as a reference point for this update. This will be the place where all of the enthusiasts who participate in the Pony Drives will come together for the weekend and will be the kick off party of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration! Be sure to take some time off work and drive your Mustang to Mustang! More details including routes, hotels, lunch stops and more will be available soon.

Schedule of Events:The offi cial event dates of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebra-tion will be Wednesday, April 16th to Sunday, April 20th, 2014. However, there may be reasons to have access to both facilities the day before and the day after the Celebration. The schedule of events is not set in stone, but there will be certain days set aside

for scheduled activities as outlined here. At this time, this is what we have talked about for a loose schedule. The fi nal schedule will be presented after we’ve planned it out with the local MCA Regional Clubs that will be hosting the Celebrations. This pre-liminary schedule, which may change due to minor differences in the locations, mainly pertains to both locations.

Tuesday, April 15th – Admission to the track for vendors to be able to get their displays in place and set up. MCA will set up our booth and be ready for registration for the next day. No planned activities for this day and no admission for spectators.

Wednesday, April 16th – This day will be the fi rst offi cial day of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration. Vendors will be ready to sell. We will encourage the Pony Drives to plan a late morn-ing or early afternoon arrival and provide them with a place that they can all gather before going their separate ways. We will encourage all vendors to be open for business as there will be enthusiasts arriving by the hour.

Thursday, April 17th – As April 17th, 1964 is accepted as the birthday of the Ford Mustang, this will be the actual 50th birth-day of the Mustang! We will have the Opening Ceremonies fol-lowed by a host of activities that are still to be planned. At some point during the day, we will have a birthday party, complete with birthday cake and the singing of Happy Birthday to the Mustang. Various clubs will have activities that they are respon-sible for including Pony Trails around the local areas and other Mustang related events. Today, this schedule is incomplete but the emphasis will be on the celebration of the Mustang’s 50th birthday. Possible on track activities, parade laps and other driv-ing activities will also be happening.

Friday, April 18th – The event will be in full swing. There will be track events such as road racing, drag racing and pa-rade laps. Other activities will be detailed in forth coming press releases. There will be displays of Mustangs and by Mustang groups, vendors to buy parts, cars, shirts from and many other things to keep Mustang enthusiasts happy and entertained. Fri-day evening, we will have a themed dinner with some form of entertainment as yet to be determined.

Saturday, April 19th – More of the same format as on Fri-day. Saturday evening we will have the Saturday Night Ban-quet. This will be the big social event of the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration and will include guest speakers and entertainment, as yet to be determined.

Sunday, April 20th – Sunday will be the last day of the event but there will be scheduled activities that will be presented

later. First thing Sunday morning there will be Easter Sunrise Services held at both tracks. The Reverend Michael Finn of Columbus, Georgia will conduct the service in Charlotte. Mi-chael has offi ciated at Anniversary events for many years and we welcome him back. We are still seeking someone to conduct the services at Las Vegas but ample time remains for this. In the afternoon, we will have the Closing Ceremonies.

Monday, April 21st – There will be no planned activities. Mon-day will be set aside just for teardown and removal of all of the vendor displays and removal of vehicles.

MCA’s commitment level to making the Mustang 50th Birth-day Celebration the “Super Bowl” of all Mustang car shows is extremely high. I hope everyone realizes this and feels the same way we do. We will be making monthly press releases that you can follow by coming back to the MCA website at www.mustang.org.

Keep in mind that there’s always going to be information that’s not ready to share with everybody and here’s why. The worst thing that we can do is to put out information that is not factual. If we have something in the planning stages and make that infor-mation available to everyone, it becomes accepted as fact. If that plan falls through and doesn’t become something that will hap-pen with or at the Mustang 50th Birthday Celebration, it could adversely effect many people. In view of that, we will try our best to only report things that we have total confi dence in that are going to happen.

I would also encourage you to come back to the MCA website and keep up with what we report. If something happens and we have to make a change, we will let you know there, fi rst. I would also encourage everyone to contact us through the proper chan-nels before going online and putting into print things that are not, or may not be, correct. We will do our best to be as open and honest as possible so that you can discuss everything freely from a correct perspective and on target.

one day you’ll either have to share your Mustang with them or build them their own! But you know what? Building my kids Mustangs with them was some of the best times I’ve ever had!

These pictures give you a small glimpse of the wonderful Mustangs,Shelbys and Cobras that were at Mini Nats this year. I hope you enjoy them. You can also go to the club website at www.norcal-saac.org for more information and how to join the club. The rest of Saturday and Sunday were spent giving rides and talking Mustangs and Shelbys with our friends, family and customers. We made some new friends, got reacquainted with some old friends and left on Sunday in the late afternoon just in time to spend a couple of hours backed up in traffi c trying to get into Vallejo and onto California Highway 680 for the trip home. We got home just before dark and it was a wonderful, full, weekend!

Our sincere thanks to the Northern California Shelby Club for hosting such a won-derful event and we look forward to attending again next year. So should you!

then you are in a really dangerous area so slow down. And if you see a yellow fl ag being held and suddenly the person holding it starts waving it wildly, then I hate to have to tell you, but you’re probably the dangerous area that they are telling the other drivers to slow down for! Yes, the fl ags are a whole language, all by themselves! OK, enoughs enough. So much for the teaching part of this article. From now on, just fun stuff!

After getting out of the drivers meeting and back at the Mustangs Plus and Restomod Shop booth, I got into my truck and headed off to fi nd a quiet spot where I could make a telephone call. I quickly found out that there are no quiet spots at a racetrack! The reason was that I had been asked to be a call-in guest on Drivers Talk Radio which is a web based radio show about cars that is hosted by former race car driver and automotive journalist Rick Titus. Many of you who are Shelby schooled know that Rick is the son of the late Shelby team driver Jerry Titus who could do things with a race car that I couldn’t do in a ten acre parking lot! Rick has hosted the show for several years and if you’re interested in hearing the show I’m featured in, go to www.driverstalkradio.com and click on episode #638 in their archived section. About 8 minutes into the show Rick, Tracy and Mika introduce me and we have a wonderful 1\2 hour or so talk about the Mustang 50th, Mustangs Plus and how the race track to us “old guys” will always be Sears Point Raceway! Ah, it’s nice to have others who share your opinion, even when you’re right!

Upon returning to our pit area, all of our crew was there (crew being code for wives and family!) many of whom had slept in. This was good because they had kept the children with them (children, you ask?) and we didn’t have to worry about running over them while we were getting the cars ready to go in the morning and sitting up the parts displays. That is, we didn’t have to worry about running over our children! Families and kids are always welcome at these events so there’s never any shortage of children. The parents and grandparents are always eager to please. If you ever fi nd yourself short of a kid, many of them will be glad to loan one to you for an hour or two! Honestly, Mini Nats is a wonderful way for families to do something together. My kids, who are now young adults with children of their own, have been to track events and Mini Nats with me almost their entire lives. Now, we’re raising and bringing another generation to the track and getting them involved. Just remember. Like me,

August 3rd to 5th, 2012 @ Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point near San Francisco, California - The Northern California Shelby Club held their 28th annual Mini Nats at Sonoma Raceway at Sears Point and what a terrifi c Shelby and Mustang event it was! 2012 is the 50th Anniversary of Shelby and Shelby American made Mini Nats one of their scheduled stops on their coast to coast 50th Anniversary of the Cobra Tour. That made this Mini Nats even more spe-cial, if that’s possible!

Now, you many be thinking, “OK. A great car show! I can see a car show online or at a local show near my house. There’s always a show with fast cars to look at somewhere close to home!” If that even entered your mind, let me set you straight. There’s a reason

that the Nor Cal Mini Nats is held each year at a race track somewhere in Northern California and that’s so the “fast cars” can be driven fast! And this year was no different. The sounds and smells of race cars fl ying around the track for the entire weekend is something that anyone who love cars and has a pulse gets excited over. Call me strange, but I’m one of those guys! That’s Mini Nats in a nutshell, to me.

Friday was a full track day run by the driving group “Hooked on Driving” and their founder, David Rey. As such, getting the Mustangs Plus trucks and trailers into the paddock and set up on Thursday evening proved to be impossible for us. So we opted to wait until af-ter the Hooked on Driving event was over to drive over and set up the Mustangs Plus and Restomod Shop’s booth.

The Mustangs Plus crew arrived on Friday and set up our pit area and display booth right down from Shelby American and their huge display. Made us feel almost puny! Also, Dembeste was on the other side of Shelby, displaying many Cobras and a couple of the NASCAR Nationwide Series Mustangs to boot. A true high performance weekend in the making for sure! After getting our area set up, it was off to the hotel for some R&R before what was sure to be a wild day on Saturday! It’s always a lot of fun to see people who you haven’t seen since the last track event and so we did a fair amount of catching up before hit-ting the rack for the night.

6am Saturday morning came all too early but we grabbed some breakfast and headed to the track to get the cars teched and fueled up for the day. Race Gas at $10.00 a gallon made me wish I was down at the local Chevron fi lling up for less than half that amount! But, it wouldn’t be 116 leaded at Chevron, either. And when you consider that new pistons would be more costly then the gas, you realize that the $10.00 per gallon gas is actually a great deal!

At 8am we all went to the drivers meeting and Tom Georgalos re-freshed all the drivers on safe driving and the race flags. This never hurts as there’s always some new drivers who aren’t familiar with the fl ag colors and all their meanings. For instance, watching racing on tele-vision, everyone knows that the white fl ag means it’s the last lap, right? Wrong! At these events, the white fl ag means that there’s an emergency vehicle on the course and to slow down so you don’t hit it. It’s usually a tow truck or an ambulance but it could be just a truck picking something up off the track. Something a little tougher. What does the green fl ag mean? In NASCAR and all other forms of racing, it means to start racing and keep everyone else behind you! The green fl ag here only means that the track is ready for you to drive your car as fast as you’re comfortable driving it. Let’s see how you do here. Do you know what the difference in a yellow fl ag being held up at a corner and a yellow fl ag being waved at a corner is? This can have up to three answers and here they are. If the yellow is simply being held up for you to see at a corner, something has happened and there’s danger in the area so slow down. If the yellow is being waved to really get your attention,

Being the 50th Anniversary of Shelby and the Cobra, a lot of Cobra owners made the trek to Sears Point for the event. It was really special to see them, and hear them, all on the track!

A few months ago, Mustang Plus was contacted by a group of hot rod enthusiasts who asked if they could come and tour Mustangs Plus and The Restomod Shop. As we talked, I found that this was an annual hot rod run that was connected to the Goodguys Hot Rod Association which is the organization that host several automotive swap meets and the cool-est cars shows that we have here in northern California each year. In fact, Goodguys host events all across the United States! So, Mustangs Plus and The Restomod Shop were honored to be asked to be a stop on their week long tour!

As always, we wanted to have refreshments ready and arrange parking for when arrived so I asked how many people and cars would be com-ing. I was told about 180 people and over a 100 cars! What a great tour! I was also told that several people that were coming were from Australia, New Zealand and other countries. So, on Tuesday, August 21st at around 10:30 am, here came the fi rst of the hot rods followed by two busses that brought those from over seas who didn’t have their cars in this country to drive. As soon as the fi rst arrived, it didn’t take long for Mustangs Plus and The Restomod Shop to be fl ooded with smiling enthusiasts! There were hot rods, street rods and, of course, Mustangs and other American cars that were all beautifully built.

For the next hour and a half, we hosted at least 180 people (I actually think there could have been more! but trying to count them proved impossible) at Mustangs Plus and The Restomod Shop. We gave complete tours, let them roam as they wanted, talked cars and showed the high quality of paint and body work that The Restomod Shop is known for. And, I have to add, they were all very respectful of the ongoing business that we had to do to get the orders out. A great group, in all senses, and all of us had a blast. I’m sure you can see that by all these pictures! Sodas, bottled water, coffee, cookies, and chips and other snacks all disappeared. Then, just as quickly as they came, they started leaving and were off to their next stop. But what a great hour and a half it had been!

TCP’s patented line of high performance center-take-off rack and pinions enables correct geometry and a level of positive, direct steering that is not possible with adapted OEM units. Power versions feature quick ratio, straightcut gears, requir-ing only three turns lock-to-lock (standard OEM 4-5/8 turns, Performance OEM 3-3/4 turns). The unique modular design utilizes an assortment of mounting brackets and centerlinks to adapt to classic Mustangs .Existing factory mounting loca-tions are used whenever possible to simplify rack installation. Once installed, the rack becomes a rigid crossmember brac-ing the lower control arm mounts; an improvement over the original bent tubular design. Mounting brackets along with the centerlink are specific to engine type and are used to vary the height of the rack as needed for oil pan clearance.

I have a 1999 Mustang that I replaced the rear bearings in at about 97k miles. I have about 115k miles now and the bearings are bad. Why would they be going out when all pinion and carrier bearings and races, both axles, seals gaskets, fresh differential oil, etc....were repalced 18k miles ago?

I’m told that axle bearing life is greatly reduced if the new axle bearings are not manually greased when they are installed in the axle tube. They come from the factory as a clean, grease free part and if they are installed without being greased properly they run for a considerable amount of time with no lubrication until the oil from the center section of the rear end reaches them. The heat that they generate while being run without lubrication damages them and early failure occurs.

Also, the axles could have had some damage to the bearing face which helped to wear the new bearings out. So, here’s what you need to do. You need to take apart and inspect the axles. Change them if necessary. Also, go to Ford and buy the new axle bearings and seals. The additional cost, which is really not all that much when you look at the labor involved, is like insurance that you’ll get a quality part. Make sure that whoever installs the new axle bearings applies a very liberal coat of grease to them AFTER they are installed properly in the axle tube. Following these instructions, you’ve done all you can to prevent pre-mature axle bearing failure. If it occurs again, then you could have bent axles or a bent axle tube. A lot of problems are blamed on bent axles and axle tubes but it’s rare that it is the problem. I hope this helps. Good luck with the problem and let me know what you fi nd out. At tached are pictures of our 1965 Mustang purchased in 2003. Majo r modifications over t he past nine years include 4 barrel carb, MSD ignition, and headers added to t he 289. Tranny was replaced with a ‘94 AOD linked to 3.55 gears. IFS includes 2” drop spindles wit h power disk b rakes and R & P steering. The rear suspension is four-link with coil- over shocks. This spring t he interio r and t he t runk were custom upholstered. Facto ry air was replaced with Classic Air, and AM/ FM/CD sound was added. The car was repainted in Bright Silver Metallic. Many, many part s were o rdered from Mustangs Plus and t he car is driven 5000+ miles a year.
