June 15uBlind Tom famous I negro musician marvel of three generations of playgoers died yesterday in Hoboken N J where he has been living for years in retirement and subsisting on charity Thomas Wiggins is the name given in his burial certificates but the surname I was one which the famous pianist adopted Blind Tom was born near Colum- bus ¬ Ga about 1850 and was the son of negro slaves He was named after his parents former master Thomas I Greene Bethune He was born almost entirely blind and more than half idiotic Musically he was entirely destitute of invention but he was marveiously I imitative I In his early childhood he I imitated the i cries of farm ttnimals the call of birds and the sound of the wind and rain He was still very young however when his attention- was directed to musical sounds- It is stated that often he stole into the house of his master and Imitate il in undertones on the pianoforte tho pieces he heard others play In 1861 he was taken to New York and ex ¬ aboard the May- flower ¬ The charge of gun cotton was greater in the torpedo used than in the ordinary Whitehead said 1111 Metcalf and yet the damage done was confined to the bulkhead selected I for the experiment The vital parts I of the vessel and the armor plate else- where ¬ were not affected The naval constructor had pre ¬ viously estimated the cost of the ex- periment ¬ at approximately 40000 and J do not think it will exceea that amount but the information obtained- as a result of the test will repay the government a hundred fold While we have always had ° the best con ¬ struction in our ships and have had numerous tests with armor plate we have lacked the knowledge that comes from experience gained under condi ¬ tions of actual warfare l In speaking his impressions of I the
