Greetings from the Pastor,
23rd Sunday in Ordinary Time! "If your brother sins against you, go and tell him his fault
between you and him alone." Gossip has become a modern pas-
time. We publish magazines with the latest celebrity chatter, and
create websites and blogs that reverberate with "opinions" about
public and private personalities alike. Many people utilize social
media to rant about the behavior of others, and the good old-
fashioned coffee break still provides ample opportunity to reveal
the offenses we have suffered or to dish out dirt about people
who aren't present.
Although it can take many forms, at its core, gossip is about
tarnishing people's reputations without giving them a chance to
defend themselves. Today, Jesus recommends a different ap-
proach. He encourages us to deal directly with people, which in
effect means to treat them with dignity and respect. Rather than
making preconceived judgments about another's behavior, Jesus
asks us to talk to the person involved ... first. Instead of running
around venting our frustrations elsewhere, or even "tattling" on
someone who has legitimately wronged us, we are called to ad-
dress our concern head-on, with charity and compassion.
As Jesus suggests, "If he listens to you, you have won over
your brother." In other words, by speaking directly to those who
have offended us, we actually have the chance to resolve the
situation before it grows out of proportion. Of course this doesn't always work; that's why Jesus mentions the other steps to take if
necessary. But we will be the ones to blame for the continuation
of the conflict unless we follow the Lord's advice and give peace
a chance ©Liturgical Publications Inc.
Have a Blessed Week.

The Gospel of
Mark
The gospel of Mark was the earliest of the four gos-
pels to be written, and it gives us a striking picture of Jesus
of Nazareth, and the impact of his ministry upon those he
encountered. Through the pages of Mark’s gospel, we too
can encounter Jesus of Nazareth as he continues to have an
impact on our own lives and through us on our world.
Jim Krisher, director of the Spiritual Renewal Center
and religious studies faculty member at LeMoyne College,
will be leading an exploration of this gospel in a four ses-
sion course. He will discuss the historical and cultural
background of the gospel, as well as its theological and
spiritual significance for believers of the twenty-first cen-
tury. Lecture outlines will be provided for each class.
SJW and IHM parishes will be hosting this study,
which will meet on Wednesday evenings, September 24,
October 1, 8, &15, 6:30pm to 8:30 p.m., at St. Joseph the
Worker parish center. Registration materials and costs will
be included in the September bulletins. Contact Micki Bliss
for details and directions to the parish, 451-2452.

IHM wraps Panera Bread every Tuesday & Sunday at 8pm

the church or at the Ryan Center.
Donations Needed for “Breakfast Run” September 21st -
The “Breakfast Run” is a ministry in which Catholic
churches from the Syracuse Diocese provide a pick-up-and-
go breakfast and bagged snack for the men who use the
Catholic Charities Men’s Shelter (formerly the Oxford Inn).
The Men’s Shelter is an outreach program of Catholic
Charities of Onondaga County that gives overnight shelter
to homeless men over the age of 24. SJW will be providing
and distributing food for the “Breakfast Run” on Sept. 21st.
We are asking parishioners to help us by donating granola
bars, cases of bottled water and snack size bags of chips.
Donations can be placed in the food cart in the back of
church or brought to the parish center by 11am on Sept.
20th. For more info contact Mary McCulley, 457-7418.
