Franceses, holandesese ingleses circulavam comcerta regularidade, desde ametade do século XVI, naembocadura do rio Amazonase no estuário do rio Pará.
On the waterside, the hamlet is protected by the small fort andthree other stone bulwarks. The
town dwellers did their bestto keep the forest as far awayas possible, by tearing downthe woods nearby. This map, from the early 17 th century, isa crude, simple sketch, but its
publication, in 2000, made itthe rst known image of the cityof Belém do Pará.
It is a quite detailed portrayalof the settlement created in1616, and was probably meantto aid the Dutch in the event ofan invasion. Since the rst halfof the 16th century, the French,
the Dutch and the Englishroamed frequently the mouthof the Amazon River and thePará River estuary. Europeansventured into the hinterland, negotiating with Indians, building precarious fortresseswhich time could easily destroy.
Their presence, denounced byPortuguese observers, triggeredthe determination to ensuredominion of the Amazon, soonafter the town of São Luiz hadbeen liberated from the French,in late 1615. The expedition sentout with this purpose arrivedon January 12, 1616. The fortthat was built there receivedthe name of Presépio de Belém(or Nativity of Bethlehem), inmemory of the day when thetroops began their journey: itwas Christmas Day.

Although criticized by manyauthors, the choice of locationwas revealing of the colonizers’
predilection for high andeasily defensible sites; thatwas the approach taken bythe Portuguese in most of thestrategically important nucleiduring colonial times. Theslightly raised platform – where
the fort was built, and wherethe town would later develop – was practically isolated fromneighboring areas by a wideswamp, called Piri by thenatives. Surrounded by theGuajará Bay and the GuamáRiver, Belém grows under the
protection granted by thissituation, where the fort’s rolein its defense is more symbolicthan effective.
The site where the rstconstructions appeared, named Cidade, is the mainvisual link with the foreignworld, with the homelandoverseas and with the riversleading towards the lands stillto be conquered, of whichthe Amazon represented theboundary. The small nucleus, the rst urban manifestation
in the Portuguese Amazon, presents itself to the worldat large as a natural fortress, and to the hinterlands as astructure of regularity andorder, opposed to the nativeworld, to nature, to theunknown.

No dia 17 de dezembro de1908, data de aniversário deAntônio Lemos, intendente

On December 17, 1908,the birthday of Belém’sIntendant Antônio Lemos,
artist Theodoro Braga1 presented a painting – Thefoundation of the City ofBelém – that had beencommissioned to him by theMunicipal authorities.
Almost three hundred years
after the city’s foundation, theartist’s canvas portrayed theevents of January 1616 in acontroversial tone. Divided inthe middle by a conglomerateof trees, the painting shows,on one side, the Indianswatching the ships that had

painting has been analyzedby experts of many areas, invirtue of its interpretation of
the historical facts concerningBelém’s foundation, aswell as the importance thiscanvas and this artist wouldhave in the early stages ofModernism, in its specificallyNorthern manifestations.

Enriched by rubber trade, which had bolstered itseconomy since the rst half
of the 19th century, Belémbecomes noble in the rstyears of the following century. Thus, economic growth andnancial autonomy allowthe city to reinvent itself, with the newfound greatnesscelebrated by TheodoroBraga’s canvas.
Now, in yet anotherimportant stage in its history,as a drastic and suddenverticalization follows a periodof intense activity in historicalareas, and with its 400th
anniversary approaching, we publish this guide.
We are moved by theintention to preserve therecords of the most importantmonuments in this long history, the ones that remain fromthe countless that used to
shape this scenery, so oftenreconstructed: rst, out oframmed earth and thatch;later, with perennial materials, that sadly were not immuneto the action of time andto the neglect of men. Littleremained from the anonymous
and fragile civil architecture, which makes this memorya succession of palaces andchurches whose magnicenceis proof of how the city has
prized the image of dominationand possession attributed to itsince its foundation.

Followingthe terrain’s natural lines, andwithout a clearly dened plan, the town’s urban design was, nevertheless, quite regular, dueto the action of arruadores* ,the ones in charge of aligningthe thoroughfares as they wereopened.
The town’s initial
development follows thecreation of religious buildings:by the Franciscans, in 1618,and by the Carmelites, in1626. These two directionsdetermine the expansion ofthe neighborhoods comprisingthe Cidade, now called Cidade

6. Sobre Landi, ver texto adiante.
There are very fewblueprints or illustrations ofreligious temples in Pará,
and many of these churches, chapels and oratories havedisappeared, making it difcultto analyze their buildings anddecoration. Most churchesdon’t have known authors, architects or master builders, and most were not evenconsidered nished at thetime, since very few had theirinternal decoration completedbefore the 19th century.Churches built in the 18th century, on the other hand,
particularly the ones designedby architect Antônio GiuseppeLandi 6 , have maintained theirstructure intact, or at leastrecognizable, even with laterreforms. The work of thisItalian architect, hired by thePortuguese government, wouldbe crucial to the changes thatwould take place after 1753.
The traditional architectonicstructure used in monasteriesand convents, accordingto Lúcio Costa, was the“disposition of the variousbodies of construction on a‘square’, as it was called at
the time, forming one or more patios”.
In Belém, this procedureis adopted by the Jesuits, the Carmelites and theFranciscans. One part of the

even in churches with moreelaborate interiors, such asthe Jesuit church of Santo
Alexandre. This building, fromthe early 18th century, hasa central nave and a deepchancel forming the shapethat was predominant in allchurches of the time, with aLatin Cross oor plan. Theexistence of interconnectedchapels along the naveand the sacristy does not, however, disgure thechurch’s rectangular shape.
During the Pombaline period, the arrival of a group of military engineers,
astronomers, mathematiciansand other professionals fromall over Europe, hired bythe Portuguese to help withthe demarcation of borders, would bring about majorchanges in urban planningand architecture, including
churches. In this respect, wemust mention the churchesof São João and Santana. Theformer is the only instance ofan octagonal oor plan in theregion, although inscribed ina square shape. The Churchof Santana has a unique oor

Pinturas decorativas e a talha colonial
Decorative paintings and colonial carvings
There are some notableinstances of colonial carving and
painting in Belém, particularly inthe churches of Santo Alexandreand Carmo. In these churches,
we can perceive the interventionof Indian workers in the imagesof mestizo angels and of localora and fauna instead ofEuropean models.
The paintings at Santo Alexandre are the oldest
surviving ones in town, and theirremarkable lively colors andexuberant lines were broughtto life after restoration in thedecade of 2000, even thoughthe gildings have been lost. These paintings, particularlythe ones in the sacristy, are not
merely decorative; they conveynot one, but several messages. Itwas a habit for the Jesuit Order, and a feature of the Counter-Reformation, to reinforce faiththrough images, allegories andsentences inscribed on profuselydecorated ceilings and walls.

Another important set ofcolonial paintings in Belém’schurches were those madeby Antônio Landi in the smallChapel of São João, duringthe 1770s. Restored in 1996,
these paintings currentlydisplay the originalityof their trompe l’oeil designs, hidden for decadesby neutral colors andNeogothic wooden altars.

Colonial tiles
The use of tiles isundoubtedly one of the mostdistinctive aspects of Pará’sarchitecture. The oldest of theones that remain are those inthe Church and Convent of
Santo Antônio, from the 18th century. Recent surveys onthe site of the former Chapelof Santo Cristo, next to thefort, found fragments of tilesfrom even older times, “inPortuguese tapete patterns, made in the 17 th century, in
blue, yellow and white”7 .
Azulejos no período colonial
Santo Antônio, datáveis do séculoXVIII.

The existence of steepleson churches is an interestingissue, particularly relevantin the case of Belém. It hasbeen discussed throughoutthe 17 th to 19th centuries, and was introduced tothe city in the early 20 th century. It derives from thetraditional construction ofPortuguese churches andthe Jesuit influence on theconstruction of religiousbuildings in Brazil. Since theconstruction, in Lisbon, ofthe Church of São Vicente deFora, in 1582, every majorchurch built in Portugal hadsteeples. Refusing this trend, the Jesuit churches generallyfollowed the design of theirheadquarters in Rome, thesteepleless Church of Gesú,by Vignola. In Brazilian Jesuitarchitecture, the churchesof Salvador and Belém doPará are considered by Bury
“not only the two mostbeautiful Jesuit monumentsin Brazil, but also, alongwith Santarém (Portugal),the most important in thePortuguese-speaking worldat that time”. The Portuguesechurch at Santarém has

AS CAPELAS, AS CONSTRUÇÕES DESAPARECIDAS
The Chapels, the Vanished Constructions
Belém’s rst chapel, devoted to Our Lady ofGrace, was built inside thefort and soon transferred
to the area right in front ofthis military building. Thismeasure, taken in 1617 byVicar Manuel Figueira, madethis new temple, built “ofwood, thatch and clay”, theMain Church. Meira Filhotells that the colonizers
who had arrived the yearbefore had brought withthem an image of Our LordHoly Christ. Thus, the rstconstruction, inside the fort, was named Santo Cristo, orHoly Christ, as it most likelyhoused the aforementioned

. In 1724, the smallchapel could still be seenon a town map. The datein which it disappearedis unknown, but recentexcavations (2001-2002)have conrmed its location12.

No século XVIII, quase
needy and rescue orphans, not easy tasks in this messycolony suffering from a lack
of resources. This church, made of rammed earth, likeall other religious buildingsof the time, has disappearedwithout a trace, although it
played an important role inthe expansion of Campina.
During the 18th
century, virtually all of Belém’schurches were, to someextent, inuenced by Landi’sdesigns. That he was directlyresponsible for most of themajor churches in town, such as Sé, Santo Alexandre,
Carmo and Santana, is nowveried, but he also builtseveral chapels – of those, theSão João is certainly the mostrelevant.
However, some of his minorworks have vanished, such asthe Chapel of Santa Rita – that
used to be located at Rua dosMercadores (currently João
Alfredo), in front
