WHAT IS UNIVERSAL DESIGN?

Universal Design is design that is gives carful consideration to as broad a group of people as possible. It is essentially the idea of making products and places more usable and accessible to everyone.

WHAT DOES UNIVERSAL DESIGN MEAN?

• Easy to use• Intuitive• Tolerant of errors by the user• Simplistic • Accessible • Efficient

WHY UNIVERSAL DESIGN?

• It helps to create a more equal social environment for people of all ages, sizes as well as people who may be disabled.

• Increases positive experiences for all users• Can help businesses to reach a broader target

market which can help to increase revenue

My target group is people who have food allergies which spans various groups of people including age, social and economic classes, ethnicity, race, and essentially any other group of people.

WHAT IS A FOOD ALLERGY?

• A food allergy is when your body rejects/ cannot process a certain type of food

• They can not be cured but can sometimes change in severity as people grow

SOME STATISTICS

• More than 12 million people in the US have a food allergy

• Roughly 4% of the population• Each year it is estimated that 100-200 people

die in the US from food poisoning

WHAT TYPES OF FOOD ARE PEOPLE ALLERGIC TO?

• Eight foods account for 90 percent of all food-allergic reactions in the U.S.

• These eight foods are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and shellfish.

WHAT IS ANAPHYLAXIS?

• Anaphylaxis is a serious allergic reaction that is often rapid in its onset and can lead to death if left untreated

• Some of the symptoms include a rash, throat swelling, and low blood pressure

• It can be caused by food, medications, and insect bites

• Can be stopped with the use of an epinephrine needle, also know as an Epi pen

GOAL OF DESIGN PROBE

• The goal of this study is to gain a better understanding of how people with food allergies live life on campus.

• Some of the things to learn about are:• Daily routines• Top restaurant choices• Top food choices• What dietary/ lifestyle changes do people make• What are some of the difficulties

WHAT IS IN THE CULTURAL PROBE KIT?

• The cultural probe kit includes:• List of approved foods• Some simple meal ideas• A notebook • Writing utensil • Epi Pen

WHY THIS CULTURAL PROBE KIT?

• Its small and lightweight • Easy to carry with you• Helpful when making meal choices• It can be educational• Can help to record what types of food you are

eating so that you can get all of the nutrients you need

KIT BREAKDOWN:

• LIST OF APPROVED FOODS:• Is intended to help remind the person with the allergy

some of the food options that are/ are not available to you• You can add/ subtract from this list at any time• It is a constant reminder of the allergy which can help

to prevent the chance of anaphylaxis shock

• SIMPLE MEAL IDEAS:• These can be meals that you cook on your own• These ideas can be useful because it can help to ensure

you are receiving the correct nutrients each day which you may otherwise be missing on a regular basis• This can also help you to broaden what you eat at times

when you may feel that your options are very limited

KIT BREAKDOWN:

• NOTEBOOK:• For writing down any notes or helpful thoughts and

information that you might consider throughout the day• Things like types of food that you like, potentially

dangerous foods or restaurants, and other notes can help to tell the whole picture• This would also have a pen with it so that you can write

down whatever you need.

KIT BREAKDOWN:

• EPI PEN• This pen is simply in the kit in the unlikely circumstance

that you need to use it after consuming something potentially dangerous. • It is helpful to have it in the kit in case you are eating

new foods that you have not tried before and have the potential to be allergic to them.
