Addressing Threats

Just as mountain gorilla habitat is transboundary, so are the threats to their existence including habitat destruction and encroachment, risk of disease transmission from humans to gorillas, and snares set in the park for poaching small antelopes. Therefore, IGCP works to address the threats to mountain gorilla conservation across the borders of DRC, Rwanda, and Uganda.

Mountain gorillas, Gorilla beringei beringei, are classified as critically endangered due to their low population numbers and limited habitat range within the Virunga Massif and Bwindi ecosystems, surrounded by densely populated human communities. Although their population numbers have been increasing in recent decades, the threats to their existence remain.
