15TH SUNDAY REFLECTION

[POWER OF THE WORD OF GOD]

In our African tradition, it is customary to receive parental blessings or elders' blessing before one embarks on any serious project or enterprises. When people get married, the elders invoked blessings upon them for love, peace, prosperity and fecundity and most

people believe that those blessings are very effective. We remember that both Abraham and Isaac blessed their sons and wished them well. These blessings are mere words but

powerful and effective. What becomes the effect of the oracles or utterances of prophets or priests of God. More interesting is the utterance of God Himself. The spoken WORD of God is effective, strong and powerful. God spoke and all things were created. 'For by the word of God were the heavens made.. “Ps33:6. Isaiah tells us that the Word of God cannot go back unless it achieves its purpose. That WORD is made flesh. That word is sown like a seed by

the Son of Man and the earth is the soil. Our dispositions can be the soil, be it rocky, thorny, dry or fertile. 'The word of God is something active and powerful like a double-

edged sword, piercing the soul and able to judge the secret emotions of our heart' Heb4:12. Our non-receptivity of the word will lead to our spiritual dryness and condemnation and thus the word fulfill its mission. 'Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word' Rom10:17. We know that all Scriptures all inspired by God 2Tim3:16-17. Thus the Word of God is used to confront and rebuke the devil, to judge our actions, to correct us, to save us, to advise and admonish us, reproof and for instruction for righteousness. May the Word of God we hear everyday help to bring us nearer to Christ and to lead us to salvation. Be you doers of the

word and not only hearers.
