Last year, propane was not immedi- ately abundant in Iowa, said Hommes, who is a market analyst with the IDALS. The national propane inventory was close to a 10-year low. “The questions for this year are how much of a draw-down the ag sector is going to need and what wild card Moth- er Nature holds,” he said. “If we have a fall with good drying conditions for crops and less demand on the residential side, we’ll be just fine.” The need for grain drying is antici- pated to be significant this year, Hom- mes said, but he also pointed to the last report from the U.S. Energy Informa- tion Administration (EIA), which said propane supplies have moved slightly above a five-year high. Added to the scenario is the bin- busting record crop predicted by the USDA. A September 11 report issued by the USDA National Agricultural Sta- tistic Service (NASS) said Iowa’s corn production is forecast at a record 2.44 billion bushels, 13 percent greater than last year’s production. The September 11 report is based on September 1 conditions. The next re- port won’t be issued until October 14 and will be based on conditions as of October 1. “As subsequent reports are issued, big crops tend to get bigger,” said Hom- mes. That means Iowa’s corn production this year could be well above the previous record. Another factor to add to the pressure on propane is the progress of this year’s crop in Iowa. Hommes said the NASS crop progress report issued on Monday, September 22, showed the crop was ahead of last year. He added that last year’s harvest was late due to spring rains, followed by an earlier-than-normal visit from Mother Nature. Although the NASS report says Iowa crops are ahead of last year’s progress, Hommes pointed out that, according to the USDA, crops are 10 days behind normal, on average. He said Iowa entered last fall with a much lower propane inventory than was needed, and a significant ag de- mand and an early demand for residen- tial use added to the pressure on the inventory. “It was kind of the perfect storm,” Hommes said. Fortunately, the propane situation is far different this year. “This year does have some similari- ties to last year; no one doubts there will be significant propane use from the ag sector this fall, but much better inven- tories of propane are in place,” Hommes said. He continued the third leg of the sup- ply and demand situation is this win- ter’s weather: will it be early or late, more severe or less severe than nor- mal? “It’s a wait and see approach, but I’m feeling better where we’re at right now compared to last year,” said Hommes. Propane supplies greater this year

Dry down seasonby Gordon Wolf

This year’s wet weather will certainly require some crop drying and put pres-sure on the supply of propane in Iowa, but propane inventory is greater than it was in 2013, according to Harold Hom-mes with the Iowa Department of Agri-culture and Land Stewardship (IDALS).

Last year, propane was not immedi-ately abundant in Iowa, said Hommes, who is a market analyst with the IDALS. The national propane inventory was close to a 10-year low.

“The questions for this year are how much of a draw-down the ag sector is going to need and what wild card Moth-er Nature holds,” he said. “If we have a fall with good drying conditions for crops and less demand on the residential side, we’ll be just fine.”

The need for grain drying is antici-pated to be significant this year, Hom-mes said, but he also pointed to the last

report from the U.S. Energy Informa-tion Administration (EIA), which said propane supplies have moved slightly above a five-year high.

Added to the scenario is the bin-busting record crop predicted by the USDA. A September 11 report issued by the USDA National Agricultural Sta-tistic Service (NASS) said Iowa’s corn production is forecast at a record 2.44 billion bushels, 13 percent greater than last year’s production.

The September 11 report is based on September 1 conditions. The next re-port won’t be issued until October 14 and will be based on conditions as of October 1.

“As subsequent reports are issued, big crops tend to get bigger,” said Hom-mes.

He said Iowa entered last fall with a much lower propane inventory than was needed, and a significant ag de-mand and an early demand for residen-tial use added to the pressure on the

inventory.“It was kind of the perfect

storm,” Hommes said.

Fortunately, the propane situation is far different this year.

“This year does have some similari-ties to last year; no one doubts there will be significant propane use from the ag sector this fall, but much better inven-tories of propane are in place,” Hommes said.

He continued the third leg of the sup-ply and demand situation is this win-ter’s weather: will it be early or late, more severe or less severe than nor-mal?

“It’s a wait and see approach, but I’m feeling better where we’re at right now compared to last year,” said Hommes.

Hommes conjectured what may have made the difference in the inventory this year is an encouragement from Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey to the propane industry and the public to

take advantage of lower summer prices and fill their tanks to capacity.

In the July 24 release, Northey also rec-ommended that those who use propane consider expanding on-site capacity at facilities and homes and to communicate early and regularly with propane suppliers.

Hommes said expanding storage and filling tanks to capacity represents a huge source of capacity.

“In the summer, there’s propane beg-ging to be used, and he (Northey) wanted to make sure the propane used for drying grain starts off full as well as the tanks for residential customers,” he said.

The difference in this year’s inventory may have also been spurred by the memo-ry of last winter’s prices.

Hommes said, for example, in earlier years someone with a 1,000 gallon tank would look at propane at $1.50 per gallon and be tempted to wait until October 1 to spend $1,500.

“A lot of people like to put that off, and then they go into the fall with less than an ideal inventory,” he said. “But summer

rates are pretty competitive, and to start off the season with a full tank helps us get through the season. I think that call was heeded by most.”

Hommes added that most of the Iowa Propane Gas Association members, who distribute gas to residential and agricul-tural customers, had record summer fills and sales.

“I think regardless of getting the word out, filling the tanks in the summer may have been a reflection of the high peaks of more than $4 and nearly $5,” said Hom-mes. He added last year’s peak propane price was $4.95 a gallon.

“Maybe it was just the vivid memory of those prices that did more than anything else to prompt people to fill their tanks,” he continued.

“We know that, regarding inventory on the farm and on residences, most of the tanks are now full. And we know that in the propane industry, the retailers have added capacity and we know they are going into the fall and winter season with full tanks.”

According to the most recent report is-sued by IDALS, the average price of pro-

pane in Iowa is $1.58 per gallon. The price is one cent less compared to last month’s report, said Hommes. Last year at this time the price was $1.39 a gallon.

The IDALS heating oil and propane price report is issued once a month during the summer and once a week from October through March.

“I think we’re in much better shape this year, but we’ll have to wait and see,” said Hommes.

A change in Iowa’s pipline sources oc-cured when the Cochin Pipeline stopped as a supply option. Kinder Morgan Partners MLP reversed the Cochin Pipeline that had delivered Canadian propane to Iowa.

Cochin Pipeline provided 13 percent of Iowa’s propane supply.

The 13 percent has easily been made up by those who have filled their tanks to ca-pacity during the summer, Hommes said.

Hommes explained it is a matter of lo-gistics of moving the propane around. The only Cochin Pipeline terminal in Iowa was in New Hampton. Trucks that went there have many other options for supply within the state.

Hommes said Iowa has 11 terminals in

Iowa.“Iowa is blessed, compared to most

states,” he said. “The terminals are spread around.”

The 11 terminals don’t take into account terminals that are just beyond Iowa’s bor-ders, such as those in Plattsmouth, Ne-braska, and Yankton, South Dakota.

Last year, Governor Branstad signed an emergency declaration that temporarily suspended the hours of service require-ments for truck drivers delivering propane, in order to assist with the Iowa corn and soybean harvest.

Hommes recalled that truck after truck went to Conway, Kansas, until the terminal in Conway priced itself out of the market.

“Fortunately, the terminal in Mont Bel-vieu, Texas, didn’t follow Conway’s price and trucks started going into Texas. That brought Conway’s prices back into line,” he said.

“Gas is in the country. It’s a matter of how far to drive to get it,” Hommes con-tinued. “But if we have a normal winter, we can rely on the pipelines and termi-nals in Iowa, and that’s what we’re hop-ing for.”

Fall is my favorite time of the year. Since I really don’t like hot weather, I enjoy the switch to cool, brisk days where the sweat no longer glistens down my face from the Iowa summer.

I delight in seeing how long I can last at a Friday night football game before I have to put on a sweater or coat, usually at halftime at September games and by two minutes into the first quarter at October and No-vember games.

I was a football cheer-leader for my high school, back in the days where switching to pants was a punishable offense. I think in four years of high school we only put on pants once, and in all fairness the snow was falling.

My love for high school football is strange, considering that my dad never played football. Ask him about it, and you’ll get a 30-minute speech on how he had to sit on the tractor helping his dad harvest. Oh, he saw the lights go on in the distance and turn off in the distance, but he wasn’t able to go to the games or play football. That’s really the entire speech right there, just repeat it for the next 29 minutes and throw in a bit more sadness, grief and mis-ery and you’ll get the full experience.

Both my parents were farm kids, in the days where farm kids were expected to pull their full weight on the farm helping out whenever they could with chores and farm work.

I grew up in a town of around 300. We

didn’t have a lot in the way of chores, and I think my sisters and I were fortu-nate to be able to do any extracurricular activities we wanted. I took full advan-tage of my school’s activi-ties, and on some Fridays I left the house at 7 a.m. and didn’t get back until midnight. I had cheerlead-ing before school, volley-ball practice after school, then cheering at the football game followed by going out and celebrating afterwards. Fridays were full!

Lately, I’ve been seeing the big kid for just about the same amount of time. He’s a junior this year, so I think this is God’s way of prepar-ing our family for him going

to college in a couple years.I see him first thing in the morning when

he wakes up. Some days, I might see him for a couple minutes in the afternoon. Most of the time, I don’t see him again until he comes home after musical practice around 10:30 p.m.

Texting ... I can reach him through tex-ting and the occasional phone call. That’s about it.

On Fridays I also get to see him on the field for marching band, and during the game I get to hear him over in the band section. Well, I don’t hear him as a lone trumpet, but I hear some trumpets so that counts, right?

The little kid is now in middle school, but I still get to see him. He’s in his second year of playing tackle football and I do believe he

enjoys it. He likes playing defense more, because I think the thrill of taking out the quarterback appeals to him. As much as I explain that the offensive line is just as im-portant (you’re the guy keeping the other team from taking out YOUR quarterback), I don’t think he likes it as much. For an 11-year-old, just pushing someone back isn’t as fun as actually tackling him.

The little kid has been trying to tackle his dad lately too, which is not as much fun for my husband as you’d think.

He didn’t play football as a kid, but was able to play in the marching band. When he attended Iowa State, he was also able to play in the marching band there as well. Besides FFA, I think marching band was the only activity in which he was able to participate. Like my parents, he had a lot of chores on the farm which took away from being able to participate in after or before school activities. Marching band was part of the band class, so he was able to do it.

I’m so thankful that advances in technol-ogy have made farm work easier and that less people are required to complete the work.

A couple weeks ago, a representative from Iowa State stopped by the high school to visit with students. The big kid talked to her about the different options at Iowa State. He came away thinking that perhaps something in robotics with agricultural applications would interest him.

I didn’t understand it, so I asked what he thought he would do with that sort of degree (in a completely different way than my dad’s “what the heck will you do with an English degree” question). He said he would like to make farming more efficient and less time consuming.

Sounds good: more time for football!

Study highlights importance of added organic matter to soil

New research suggests that conventional corn-soybean systems, man-aged with synthetic fertil-izer alone, do not produce enough plant material to sustain soil organic mat-ter levels, reducing crop yield in the long term.

Iowa State University agronomist Michael Cas-tellano, who led research on a recently completed project funded by the Leo-pold Center for Sustain-able Agriculture, studied soil properties at four field sites in Iowa, each with continuous corn and corn-soybean rotations.

Plots at each site have been maintained for 13 years under specific fer-tilizer regimes, ranging from 0 to 240 pounds of

synthetic nitrogen per acre per year, including some maintained at the agro-nomic optimum of about 150 pounds per acre.

Results of the two-year study show that when managed at optimum lev-els, continuous corn sys-tems generally produce enough residue - about three tons per acre per year - to maintain or in-crease soil organic matter.

Soybeans, on the other hand, create half that much residue, so corn-soybean systems overall do not produce enough bulk matter to replenish soil organic matter stocks in the long term, even at optimum fertilizer levels.

Moreover, increasing synthetic fertilizer inputs

beyond optimum levels does not appear to impact soil organic matter be-cause it does not increase residue inputs and is rap-idly lost to the environ-ment.

“The corn-soybean system in Iowa is los-ing organic matter when managed with synthetic fertilizer only, even in the absence of erosion,” said Castellano.

“Our data highlights the importance of getting as much organic matter into that system as possible.”

Funded in 2011 by the Leopold Center’s Ecology Initiative, the project was conducted on sites with little or no slopes to con-trol against erosion, oth-erwise the biggest factor

in soil organic matter loss. The carbon and nitrogen content of soil samples collected in 1999 were compared against samples from 2009.

More detailed analy-sis was also done on the continuous corn systems to understand what per-centage of the soil organic matter was chemically available for plants to take up, and what percentage formed stable aggregates resistant to breakdown by soil microbes.

The soil aggregates, be-cause they resist decom-position for many years - sometimes centuries - are critical for long term car-bon and nitrogen seques-tration.

On corn-soybean op-

erations, Castellano said the best way to increase soil organic matter, after controlling for erosion, is to return manures to the soil, since they contain carbon in addition to ni-trogen.

Cover crops may also increase soil organic mat-ter levels. At the Marsden Farm, where researcher Matt Liebman has run a diversified cropping sys-tems project since 2002, Castellano collected soil data from a two-year corn-soybean rotation versus a three-year corn-soybean-oat + red clover cover-crop system.

Preliminary analysis confirmed previous re-search suggesting that the three-year rotation

has more nitrogen avail-able for plant uptake, re-sulting in greater yields than those observed for two-year rotations.

Castellano hypothesized that high-quality manure or crop residue benefits soil quality.

He’d also like to test the hypothesis that soils with low organic matter levels have lower fertilizer and nitrogen use efficiency than well-managed soils with high organic matter.

Answering these new questions dovetails with Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy goals to reduce nutrient loading of water-ways.

While over-fertilization results in nutrient pollu-tion to air and water, Cas-tellano’s work shows that under-fertilization is also detrimental, since it re-duces the amount of soil organic matter that acts as a reservoir for nutrients put onto the field.

Meanwhile, the “opti-mum” level of synthetic nitrogen inputs is always variable, depending on factors including field site conditions, management goals and weather condi-tions.

“There are many sites that don’t respond to ni-trogen fertilizer in one given year, and we don’t even know how to predict those,” said Castellano. “There’s always going to be uncertainty surround-ing whether (farmers) are managing their organic matter optimally.”

Given all this variabili-ty, he said, manure inputs or cover crops provide a level of insurance against nutrient losses. By im-proving organic matter, they serve as a buffer against year-to-year un-certainties.

“Cover crops are par-ticularly promising,” said Castellano, “because the Iowa Nutrient Reduction Strategy has identified those as a big tool to re-duce nitrate loads. So if they also can increase or neutralize the loss of organic matter in a corn-soybean system, there are two factors that really can contribute to long-term sustainability of Iowa’s farmlands.”

Newsletter covers small farm living Drawing for football tickets an incentive to subscribe

Many Iowans are choosing to live on small farms or acreages for a variety of reasons. According to the Census of Agriculture, one-third of Iowa farms are small farms with 50 acres or less. Io-wans say small farms offer a quiet place to retire and open spaces to raise young families.

Some are drawn to the rural lifestyle by memories of growing up on a farm or visiting a grandparent’s farm. Oth-ers want to raise their own food, make a positive contribution to the environment

or contribute to the local food system.Christa Hartsook knows about the op-

portunities and the challenges of small farm living. She and her husband, Greg, are raising three children on a small farm in Story County. She also has been in-volved with small farm sustainability the past 12 years as a value-added agri-culture program specialist for Iowa State University Extension and Outreach. She is a natural fit as the small farm sus-tainability program coordinator with Iowa State University Extension and Outreach, the position she began in June.

Hartsook has her sights set on making sure other Iowans know of the opportu-nities and available resources for man-aging challenges of small farm living.

“Living on an acreage or small farm definitely has its opportunities,” she said. “There are many things Iowans can do to earn additional income, sus-tainable take care of the land and the re-sources, and provide a rural lifestyle for their family.”

Hartsook and the small farm sustain-ability program are re-introducing the ISU Extension and Outreach Acreage Living newsletter in an online format.

Iowans living on small farms recently received introductory postcards encour-aging them to subscribe.

Hartsook added an incentive for those that subscribe before October 5: their names will be entered into a drawing for tickets to the Iowa State vs. Texas Tech game on November 22.

“We want people to be excited about the newsletter and the information that will come to them every three months, so we are building on the excitement around the Cyclone football team,” she said. “Readers will find valuable infor-mation in the Acreage Living e-newslet-ter, regardless of why they are choosing a rural lifestyle.”

The first issue includes information about backyard poultry, fall turf grass management, well maintenance and in-spection, promoting pollinators and ver-min management. The newsletter will be emailed directly to subscribers and coun-ty extension offices across the state, and will be available on the ISU Extension and Outreach small farm website.

“For those that didn’t receive a post-card or have misplaced it, they can read the newsletter and easily subscribe by

going to the small farm sustainability website,” Hartsook said.

The website address is http://www.ex-tension.iastate.edu/smallfarms.

The small farm sustainability website organizes resources under the headings of planning and management, marketing and food systems, alternative and spe-cialty crops, and niche livestock. It also encourages visitors to send a note if they have a question about small farming. A team of trained ISU Extension and Out-reach specialists are ready to respond to small farmers and those living on acre-ages, and connect Iowans with the Iowa State resources. Hartsook said the small farm sustainability program brings re-sources from across the university and the extension system to Iowans. Publi-cations, people and agencies that serve as resources will be highlighted on the website, in the e-newsletter and through online learning opportunities that will be available early in 2015.

“We want to make learning and knowledge exchange readily available so Iowans can learn when they have time in their schedules and a need to know,” she said.

20 selected for Iowa Corn Leadership class

Twenty individuals from across Iowa were selected for the Iowa Corn Leadership Enhancement and Develop-ment (I-LEAD) Class 7.

The class consists of farmers, educators, agribusiness and governmental leaders from across the state.

The I-LEAD program was developed and is sponsored by Iowa Corn in recognition that the future of Iowa agri-culture depends on developing leaders who have a pas-sion for agriculture.

The goal of the two-year program is to provide Iowa’s talented men and women with the tools they need to succeed as leaders and spokespeople.

The first session includes leadership style learning and team building activities. Other sessions will include com-modity information, a domestic agricultural mission and policy information.

Integral parts of the I-LEAD program include gaining an understanding of agriculture and making decisions as a group and developing leadership skills.

Many of the two-day meetings are spent discovering more about members’ leadership style and building a foundation for working with different personalities and points of view.

The class may choose to fundraise for an international mission to a location of their choice in the second year. Members of I-LEAD Class 7 are Randy Bruck (Neola), Constance Casson (Underwood), Matthew Eddy (Pleas-ant Hill), Alex Edgington (St. Ansgar), Michael Fritch (Mitchellville), Drew Gieselman (Marion), Katie Hall-Despins (Clive), Laura Holoubek (Ankeny), James Jordan (Roland), Bonnie Kroneman (Osage), Brandon Maier (Eagle Grove), Christopher Mehrens (Story City), Marc Mummelthei (Waverly), Maury Noonan (Mason City), Gretchen Paluch (Des Moines), Sara Ross (Min-den), Jason Schwenneker (Ankeny), Marcie Stevenson (Ames), Adam Theis (Omaha, Nebraska), and Charles White (Grinnell).

I-LEAD Class 7 will start its journey in November. For more information, visit iowacorn.org/ilead.More than 120 leaders have graduated from the I-

LEAD program and many have gone onto leadership roles within the Iowa Corn Growers Association, the Iowa Corn Promotion Board or other community or com-modity organizations.

While thousands of people checked out Nebraska City’s AppleJack Festival, those in the know heard from a modern day Johnny Appleseed.

Andrew Pittz, a co-owner of the Saw-mill Hollow Family Farm, has planted aronia berry bushes in each of Iowa’s 99 counties, and his family has grown the stock of the lowly black chokeberry to a commercially viable product.

“We are the first aronia berry farm in America, right here in western Iowa,” said Pittz, who is a sixth-generation farmer.

U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, D-Iowa, high-lighted the innovation behind the farm’s success in his keynote welcome the morn-ing of September 20 at the seventh annu-al North American Aronia Berry Festival.

He quoted Ralph Waldo Emerson: “What is a weed? It’s a plant whose vir-tues have yet to be discovered.”

Harkin said the chokeberry “was cer-tainly overlooked” until Sawmill Hollow came along.

The aronia berry is known for a sharp, tart taste, but its antioxidants have gar-nered attention as a “superfood,” a par-ticularly nutrient-rich health food in the same company as other antioxidant-rich berries as blueberries and acai berries.

What sets apart the aronia is the con-

centration of antioxidants: five times that of a blueberry and three times that of an acai berry, Harkin said.

With the entrepreneurship of Sawmill Hollow, the fruit has gone from a farmers market novelty to a multimillion-dollar industry.

Whole Foods and Hy-Vee now carry the berries. Missouri Valley Mayor Clint Sargent, whose city is about eight miles south of the farm, delivered a proclama-tion declaring the weekend Whole Foods Market Days in recognition of the Omaha store being the first retail outlet for Saw-mill Hollow.

“Here in Harrison County, we like to think of ourselves as one big commu-nity,” he said.

Besides Whole Foods, Harkin did his part in putting the aronia berry on the map, Pittz said. He supported the busi-ness and raised awareness since he first met “our hero and our friend” at a Des Moines farmer market.

“This is very special for us,” Pittz said of the retiring senator including the festi-val on his farewell tour of the state.

In his keynote, Harkin said he was nostalgic to return to the “spectacularly beautiful” Loess Hills farmstead, which is surrounded by trees whose leaves were turning colors as autumn began to de-scend on Harrison County.
