President’s Letter
Hello IFDA Friends,
WOW, what a wonderful event we had recently at Delia Kitchens, the Viking Center, in Westwood. A stunning venue for our vendor tables, everyone felt right at home because we were always in a kitchen, where everyone always likes to gather. We had nearly 90 members attend, both vendors and designers. The networking was so intense that we had to remind people to eat dinner! The 2nd Annual Designer Showcase was a huge success with Design New England once again being our media sponsor. Thank you, Steve Twombly and Gail Ravgiala for your assistance and many thanks to our own member, JoAnne DiFrancesco from JD Communications for promoting and organizing the showcase. Congratulations to our winners: Beverly Rivkind, her second award in as many years for the Dining Room category, Shirin Tahsili for Kitchen design, Karen Dzendolet and
Thom Glynn for Living Space and Deborah Farrand for Specialty Space. Christine Kay won the Community Service Award for her work with the Ronald McDonald House. Good job everyone. You can see their winning entries in the November/December issue of Design New England.
If you didn’t attend the Member Dinner at Delia then you should be sure not to miss the upcoming annual Holiday Party. This year it will be on Wednesday evening, December 8th at the Union Club on Park St., across from the Boston Common. You cannot imagine a more quintessential Boston location during the holiday season than this lovely old mansion. Lots of Holiday spirit abounds with our annual awards, the Angel Tree contributions and good food and friends. Stay tuned for the invitation in the mail.
I recently returned from a trip to Philadelphia, headquarters for IFDA. Jacqui Becker, our President-Elect and I represented the New England Chapter at the annual Presidents Meeting. We quickly came to realize what a dynamic chapter we have and how important we are to the wellbeing of all IFDA members. There are 16 chapters, ours being the largest. We represent 17% of the IFDA membership world-wide. We have a well-balanced membership of vendors and designers unlike other chapters who are heavily weighted to one end of the spectrum. Our programming is very varied and has had some tremendous successes this year. We again had one of the most successful Walks for Education and raised $3,000.00 for the IFDA/Education Foundation, which awards the most grants and scholarships in our design industry.
The IFDA National Symposium is going to be held in September 2011 in Philadelphia at the Hotel Sofitel. They have planned an amazing array of nationally recognized speakers and programs that will benefit all of us small business people. The Philadelphia Chapter has planned for a culturally enriched, unique opportunity for us to tour some of the sites that are not otherwise viewed by the public. It pays to know people in the right places! Mark your calendar for September 15-18, 2011 in Philadelphia. The Hotel Sofitel Philadelphia has luxury accommodations, so plan to treat yourself to a special few days.
During the last few months I have watched the programming of IFDA events get sandwiched between other industry happenings and our scheduling get increasingly harder because of conflicts with both national and regional design dates such as High Point or Neocon. I have also had several members express frustration with the national website, www.ifda.com, and its inability to supply a New England Chapter membership list to use for mailings. A downloadable, easily accessible list of the New England Chapter members was not available on the national website. I felt it was important to the chapter to have a user-friendly web site. These two areas of concern

J.M. Construction Co. is pleased to be the recipient of a Gold 2010 Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award – Eastern Massachusetts region – in the “Residential Bathroom over $60,000” category. J.M. transformed a cramped and outdated bathroom in a 100+ year old stately Newton home without sacrificing the charm of a home from this time period. Utilizing space from an adjacent useless hallway provides room for a state-of-the-art steam shower as well as additional storage - new fixtures and lighting compliment the cool green tiles throughout and add
the final touches to the renovation. The annual CotY ‘Evening of Excellence’ awards presentation was held November 3rd.

New Members By Rob Henry, VP Membership
Our New England chapter continues strong for gaining new members. Since our last newsletter we have gained another 17 members. Our new member count in 2010 is 39, and we feel there will be some additional people that would enable us to beat the number of new members in 2009. IFDA is still offering the opportunity to join now in 2010 and en-joy the balance of this year and all of 2011 for the one-year dues of $250. We are asking you, our IFDA members to advise friends and business associates about this opportunity. The total membership is 174, maintain-ing our position as the largest chapter of the 16 in the USA.
Our chapter continues to have monthly lunch meetings for new and prospective members. These meetings provide a forum to meet other people and get a full orientation about IFDA. Any member that has a candidate that would be interested in attending one of these lunches (at no charge) should contact our VP of Membership, Rob Henry, either by phone (617-653-1013) or email ([email protected])

The login for the members information on the new website is intended for MEMBERS ONLY and is provided on a handout in this newsletter. Any violation will not be in the spirit it was intended. We feel this website is an additional benefit to the membership and adds value to being an IFDA member. You now can market your business to our 170 + members with just a click. The board hopes the entire Boston design community will come to rely on the IFDA industry calendar as a reputable source for area events. It is hoped that other organizations will check www.ifda-ne.org for any potential conflicts BEFORE they schedule their own events. Check out the site, www.ifda-ne.org, and be sure all of your member information is accurate. We are committed to making this happen. Bob Grossman of Wolfers Lighting is the man in charge of the Industry Calendar. If you have any information you want posted on the calendar send it to [email protected]. We hope you enjoy the new site. A special Thank You to Linda Merrill, VP Communications, and Lois Wood Graphic Design for making this a reality.
I hope you will enjoy your Holidays with family and friends.

Walk for EducationSeptember 30, 2010
The second annual New England Chapter Educational Foundation Walkathon was a terrific success, nearly tripling monies raised to support the Educational Foundation’s 16 grants and scholarships. Twelve Boston Design Center showrooms formed the ‘walk’, each offering educational programs about their products and services. Walkers and supporters then enjoyed a lovely reception at Janus et Cie, where cocktails and a raffle of architectural photography services by Michael J Lee Photography furthered the good times and the proceeds. Heartiest thanks to our generous Walkathon sponsors: Gerrity Stone, Boston Lights Expo/Designers Lighting Forum New England, California Closets, FDO Group, GettingHomeDesign.com, Interim Furnishings, JD Communications, M-Geough, Michael J Lee Photography, Poggenpohl, Stark Carpet, Steven King Inc. and Venegas and Company.

2010 Designer Showcase AwardsThe International Furnishings and Design Association, in partnership with Design New England Magazine, are pleased to announce the win-ners of the 2010 Designer Showcase & Recognition Awards. The winners were recognized in five categories: Living Spaces, Dining Rooms, Specialty Spaces, Kitchen/Bath and Community Service.
Karen Dzendolet and Thom Gylnn of Eye Catching Interiors, Inc. won in the category of Living Spaces for their work on the project “Nashua Living Room”. This award winning team stayed true to the client’s desire to keep the original footprint of the house while creating a more contemporary feel for entertaining. Karen and Thom maintained the authenticity of the 1970’s Cape style home while focusing on the dynamic contrast between those traditional and modern elements.
Beverly Rivkind, the winner of the Dining Room Award and owner of Beverly Rivkind Interior Design, transformed her client’s stiff traditional dining room into a perfect combination of “country-chic sensibility” and elegance. Ultimately, the room, complete with intricately carved wood structures and Louis XIV chairs, fulfills the client’s goal: it is functional, warm and inviting, as well as full of unexpected appropriate contrasts and surprises.
The project, “Recycled Design Inspiration” by Deborah Farrand of Dressing Rooms, was crowned winner in the Specialty Space category. Farrand transformed an existing two car garage to create a contemporary, yet classical, design studio where the client could conduct their busi-ness ventures. The space is practical, functional and showcases a love of the past with a dedication to the future.
The Kitchen category was won by Shirin Tahsili of Moda Cucina for her work on the project “Design with Challenge”. This Beacon Hill project produced a handsome kitchen that embraced existing structural elements, while customizing features tailored to the client’s expectations.
The final award bestowed was the Community Service Award given to Chris Kay, interior designer and owner of Trademark Style. Kay is in her fourth year as an IFDA NE Board Member and is Vice President of Community Services. Her principal efforts, along with her active participa-tion in her home community of Hingham, Massachusetts, have been assisting the Boston Ronald McDonald House, a home-away-from-home
facility for families with children being treated for cancer.

Members Dinner & Designer Showcase & Recognition AwardsOctober 21, 2010
The consensus from the attendees was this was one of the best IFDA events in recent memory. We had a record number of 91 people attending and the many vendor tables and designer showcase event made the festivities beneficial for both designers and vendors. A big thanks to Delia Inc./Viking Kitchen Center in Westwood for playing host for the evening. The change of venue and the beautiful showroom added greatly to the overall enthusiasm and energy exhibited in their showroom.
After plenty of time for vendors to exhibit their products, networking and a great dinner, the group gathered together for the presentation of the winners of the 2nd Annual Designer Showcase & Recogni-tion Awards. We are pleased that Design New England again sponsored the Showcase and coordinated the panel of independent judges to select the winners.
Rob Henry of Sounds Good was the master of ceremonies of the event. The Design New England team of Steve Twombly, Publisher and Gail Raviala, editor-in-chied, presented the awards to the designers.
Congratulations to all the winners!

Creating Eco-Friendly Kitchens at Poggenpohl October 27
On October 27th, Poggenpohl hosted a lively event to educate IFDA members and non-members with a panel who provided their expertise for kitchen and building sustainability. The conversation centered on the elements of an Eco-friendly kitchen, including natural and sustainable materials and certification criteria.
The panel included Rosemary Porto of Poggenpohl, Nicole Goldman, Founder of “g” Green Design Center and Stephanie Horowitz, AIA Certified Passive House Consultant. Jo Ann Ross shared her expertise as Chief Wine Educator and her vast knowledge of organic wines served throughout the evening that were chosen to accompany the delicious and local hors d’oeuvres created and passed to the guests by Jennifer and Julia Frost of Chive catering. Jen-nifer Frost gave guests a presentation on creating the simple, yet delectable hors d’oeuvres served for the event.
