• ne .. ' arrests for fingerprintable offenses are reported to the ~ew York State Division of Criminal Justice Services by arresting agencies, the PRS file is searched to detenr.ine if the arrestee is currently on probation. If the arrestee j.s on probation, a "hit" notice is sent to the local probation department and a recnrd of the rearrest js maintained in the PRS system.

FeT each rearrest, if more than one charge is made, only the more Fer:!o\ls chpTge is listed on PRS. The same individual may be involved in more than one inctance of rearrest, as ~ell. The statistics reported here are not copvictions. All of the 2,818 hit notices are based on QTrest charge~.
A total of 2,283 individuals ~ere arrested for these 2.818 new offensps (1,075 jn~:i\'iduals were involved in 1,138 new DWI. offenses and 1,367 indivjdual mil r-ffenders 'Were involved in 1,681 criminal arrests). 124 DWI' to on rrobation ~ele involved in both ne~ D~l and ne. criminal behavior-.--
It is also interesting to note that separate PRS reports on all prohationers in the State reveal an equivalent number of new DWI offenses by Non-D\"l prC'bationers during 1987 (1':1099). This suggests the need for attention to the alcohol abuse issue among non-DWI offenders.

Annual DWI Probation Rearrest Rates
1,138 1,680
D~~ probation rearrest rates have been examined for the past six years. The total annual caseload of DWI probation cases increased by 151% in five years (from 10,588 in 1982 to 26,563 in 1987). The twelve-month rearrest rate, however, has remained. consistent at 10-11% for the past five years, after declining from 12% in 1982 to 11% in 1983, and then to 10% in 1984.
Rearrests for continued DWI charges in 1985 and 1986 represented 4% of all DWI cases supervised. In 1987 charges of continued DWI activity were lodged in 1.138 instances, again representing 4% of all DWI cases under supervision.
Among those rearrested, it is noted that the percentage involved in continued DWI activity has declined over the six year period.
