Competitive power IC requires long term accumulation on technology(An interview with Andy Chang, Marketing Director, Asia Pacific of Fujitsu Microelectronics)

Technology Category: Power Technology | 2009-11-24Yao Gang, Senior Reporter from EDN China

Power Management IC application market is divided into the low-voltage market below 40-volt, the 40 ~ 200 V market(which is mainly for automotive electronics and telecommunication) and the high-voltage AC-DC applications market forabove 200 kV voltage. From the view of the market demand trend, both low-voltage and high-voltage market have thepotential to increase. As the power IC application is used widely for a large quantity, now, nearly 60% of China's ICdesign companies involved in the power management chip development. However, Andy Chang, Marketing Director, AsiaPacific of Fujitsu Microelectronics believes that competitive power IC still requires long term accumulation on technology.

EDN China: How will Fujitsu Microelectronics deal with price competition from the Chinese market?

Andy Chang: The development of power chip can not be achieved in one move such as other digital electronic devicesdevelopment, but it requires a long-term development and accumulation process. In recent years, the company engagedin the development of the power chips increased gradually, and the power chips are widely used in many products. Fujitsuare willing to see the development and the technological upgrading of the whole power-management IC market throughorderly competition by new entrants. As the important device in electronic devices, the stability and reliability of thepower chip are the key points for customer besides price. For example, the notebook computer uses charge-management IC, and due to the special nature of lithium batteries (risk of an explosive under undue charge), there are

Page 8: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com MICROELECTRONICS LIMITE… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... At the recent AUTOSAR Technology

high performance and reliability requirements for power management IC products, which requires long-term R & D andaccumulated experience to meet these requirements.

EDN China: Many OEMs in China generally do not have their own power IC development. How to attract them to useFujitsu power solution?

Andy Chang: Fujitsu has nearly 30 years development history on power chip and has an R & D team with more than 200staffs. In addition to the high reliability and stability on IC products, continuous improvement and application experiencefor decades will help customers evade the risk in power design very well. This is the main reason for customer to choosethe power chip product of Fujitsu.

EDN China: How will Fujitsu Microelectronics power management solutions seamlessly integrate with the system designby customer and realize the best performance?

Andy Chang: Due to the particularity and importance of power supply design, Fujitsu Microelectronics started a localizedlayout in an early time. Now we have FAE in Taipei, Hong Kong, Shenzhen, Shanghai, Beijing, Dalian and Chengdu fortechnique support for customers. Close communication allows Fujitsu to have a rapid response to various issues thatcustomers encountered in product development process. The FAE will help our customers to check the reasonablenessof the power circuit design and reliability, from the entire system architecture and provide suggestions to them. Inaddition, we also provide on-site technical support, our FAE and will have the test and evaluation together withcustomers in their labs.

EDN China: Will Fujitsu's end products bring the worries from power-related systems manufactures?

Andy Chang: No, it won't. For example, since 15 years ago, Fujitsu power management R & D team cooperated withFujitsu notebook R & D department to begin developing the charge management IC for notebook. Such cooperation willmake IC R & D departments to know the market demand earlier and have the product development and improvement intime. Through continuous development and improvement of several generation products, the new lithium battery chargemanagement IC "MB39A132" and "MB39A134" that Fujitsu developed gained high praise both in Taiwan and many placesof mainland China. Including the netbook market which is very popular recently, many manufacturers that trust Fujitsubrand have chosen Fujitsu's power management IC.

EDN China: As analog techniques need to work closely with the processing line, but with the entrance of foundry industryoperator into the field of analog products, will the advantage of Fujitsu Microelectronics on its own processing beweaken?

Andy Chang: Fujitsu's analog products are manufactured based on advanced semiconductor design, assembly andapplication technology. These products have a variety of advanced features for a wide range of applications, includingwireless communications, telecommunications networks, power supply, data storage systems, image processing andhigh-definition television (HDTV). Fujitsu Microelectronics has many own factories in Japan. Even though large foundryoperator has entered the field of analog products foundry many years ago, because of the different processes andtechnology, the focus of the analog products that Foundry can provide are different from ours. We meet customerdemand through differentiation competition and providing cost-effective products.

EDN China: As the industry leading companies are focusing more on demand creation, How about FujitsuMicroelectronics capacity in this aspect?

Andy Chang: As a technology-leading semiconductor company, Fujitsu Microelectronics constantly provides customerswith all the necessary products and technologies. The leadership to meet the market demand and provide the productsolutions is due to the cooperation with the leading companies in various industries including some senior manufacturesin Japan. There Fujitsu Microelectronics is able to complete the R&D and technical reserve ahead of the competitors.

In fact, Fujitsu Microelectronics has also attached great importance to the localization. Through the spread across sales, technical support and R & D centers, we can provide the products services and technical support that is close tocustomers. In addition, Fujitsu Microelectronics help customers reduce development costs and enhance marketcompetitiveness by providing high value-added integrated solutions.

are the battery charge management ICs for 2-4 batteries whose key applications are notebook and netbook. Our goal isto expand product lines continuously and extend the charge management IC to various products, such as power tools, and even the electric bicycles and electric vehicles with more batteries.

As the portable product is very sensitive to the noise of power supply, Fujitsu reduces the power supply noise by usingspread-spectrum technology to further solve EMI problems. At the same time, we adopt the MOSFET part of low parasiticresistance and parasitic capacitance and solve the EMI problem with RC filter. Fujitsu is full of experience on powersupply products and can help customer fix IC specifications, frequency, current depending on the application demand andcharacteristics in order to meet the EMI requirements. Then, we continue to have adjustment to the System through testand meet the requirements of laws and regulations on EMI. Fujitsu also specifically developed SSCG products which cansolve the problem with a single chip.

Although there is no dedicated power supply IC such as PFC, many PMU made by Fujitsu have actually integrated suchfeatures. For example, LED driver, PFC, CODEC feature was integrated to meet the manufacturer's variousrequirements on capability, size, power consumption and weight. The mobile phone manufactures have the strictestrequirement on functional PWM. Fujitsu is meeting the demand on new features trough continuous integration.

Fujitsu offers a lot of PMU products, such as MB39C311 which integrated the power management and Audio AMPtogether. For wireless applications, Fujitsu has also developed a WiMax chip for the PMU MB39C316, which is providedto customers as a module together with WiMax chip.

Fujitsu's goal on products development is to support new energy and new applications, and fully play the advantages ofFujitsu on lithium batteries in order to meet the application requirements for new energy. The products for electricvehicles are in planning.

For the netbook market which is very popular now, Fujitsu introduces a power management unit MB39C308, which issuitable to UMPC, MID using Intel Menlow platform. We will cooperate with platform the manufactures on the comingproducts to meet the market demand.

In addition, we also get great improvement on the power management IC for large-size LCD panels based on China R &D Center. 3 products have been released and get positive response from customers. With the investment increasing ondomestic LCD industry, we are looking forward to cooperate with more LCD panel manufactures domestic through thedevelopment of localized product.

One feature of MB39A132 is the wide input voltage(up to 8V~25V) and the maximum input voltage is up to 27V, therefore, it has high suitability to the power supply. Theoutput voltage of MB39A132 is 4.0V, 4.2V or 4.35V with the output accuracy of ±0.5%, and the typical standby current is6μA. PWM switching frequency can be set within 100kHz~2MHz. It supports two, three, and four lithium batteries. Themaximum leakage current of the battery is 10μA with thermal protection. It can provide voltage output for each inputcurrent and charge current when the battery is full. The package is OFN-32.

MB39A134 adopts asynchronous rectifier mode with 28V maximum input voltage and 4.2V or 4.1V output voltage. Itfeatures the charging status display function, without output voltage for input current or full current. Other features arealmost the same as MB39A132's and the package is lead-free TSSOP-24.

The character of MB39A132 and MB39A134 is the small ripple when the load various. Through a constant voltage controlloop and two constant current control loop, the load changes can be rapid feedback to the control terminal and quickadjust the output to achieve high-precision rapid feedback. There is high precision charge control within the chip with theaccuracy of ± 0.5%. When charging with the allowed voltage, it is necessary to maintain a certain margin and to be highenough in order to accelerate the charging. Output terminal adopts MLCC ceramic capacitors with low ESR to do filtering, whose shock is smaller, so that the output is more stable.

It is worth mentioning that the Fujitsu's MB39A132 and MB39A134 are the industry first products to support lithium ironbattery. The performance of lithium iron battery is close to lithium battery with the voltage of 3.7V when it is full. The costof manufacture and usage is lower. In addition, it has very rich material resources. The capacity of lithium iron battery isvery large and it is more environmentally friendly, which is very suitable for electric vehicles.

In addition, Fujitsu has developed some dedicated power IC for liquid crystal flat-panel power IC for Taiwan's LCD panelmarket. MB39C313A can be used to the LCD panel with 120Hz frame rate. It has 4 channels, using voltage-mode PWMcontrol and its switching frequency is 500KHz or 750KHz. The feed-forward input voltage mode can achieve excellentvoltage regulation. The integrated active and passive pump driver supports the charge pump output of 100Madc. Thefeatures include: the maximum voltage of build-in software is 18.1V; the accuracy of the boost converter is ± 1.0%; themaximum software current limit is 2.8V; the accuracy of the 1.5A buck converter is ± 1.5%; the input voltage is 8V ~ 14V;build in sort comparator. It also has the over current protection, over voltage protection and thermal protection, adoptingTSSOP-28 package.

Andy Chang, Marketing Director, Asia Pacific of Fujitsu Microelectronics

We will convert from investing heavily in the wafer factory to emphasizing on developing products and projects.

Fujitsu Microelectronics introduces highly efficient and low cost analog projectCompletes the conversion from IDM to Fab-lite.Benefits from China Government's domestic demand stimulus policy

In December 2007, Fujitsu announced the green guideline innovation project, helping clients to reduce environmentalpollution. By developing highly efficient IT products and by introducing green IT solutions to the public, the green guidelineinnovation project is designed to cut down carbon dioxide emission at the start of the project.

The core the low carbon concept is consistent throughout in all of Fujitsu Microelectronics' newly developed products. For example, the power consumption efficiency is especially attractive as one of the important features in notebooks. For this reason, we rolled out high efficiency, low-power consumption analog products and solutions for notebooks,large-size LCD monitors and more.

With highly efficient power management ICs developed by new R&D process, Fujitsu is helping thousands of notebooksto improve battery efficiency, to expand battery life and reduce carbon emission. Furthermore, Fujitsu has developed themulti-channel integrated analog IC especially for drivers for large-sized LCDs, realizing highly efficient drivers, high-speedresponse, while reducing the number of external components. It assists large-sized LCD screens to become slimmer andhigh speed.

In April 2009, Fujitsu has confirmed the development of ASIC and ASSP with TSMC on the 40nm process. In August, thetwo parties announced again the development and enhancement of the 28nm high efficiency process together for FujitsuMicroelectronics 28nm logic IC production, based on TSMC's technology platform. This means Fujitsu has transferredfrom IDM to the Fab-lite mode.

We will change from the strategy of investing heavily on wafer factory to focusing on product and project development. This is the trend of the whole industry. More and more companies are starting to follow this strategy.

In 2009, the China Government's domestic demand stimulus policy received great success. Our company has benefiteda lot from it, for example, the sale of household appliances, automobiles, set-top boxes and TV sets grew rapidly this pastyear. With the recovery of consumers' confidence in buying, we are optimistic about the growth of automobiles, TV sets, household appliances, medical electronics, notebook computers as well as in the growth in the semiconductor industry. We will increase the investment and operations in China and will further enhance design localization, applications, sales

and market exploration. In 2010, we will maintain the strong support to local clients and partners, introducing newtechnology and products to the important markets.

In the mid- and high-end vehicle electronics market, the demand of 16-bit and 32-bit MCU is ever increasing. We willstrongly promote our new generation of 16-bit MCU16FX series. It has a 56MHz dominant frequency and multi-channelCAN/LIN bus, enabling online debugging emulation. The 32-bit MCUMB91460 series is also one of our main products. Itentirely supports the AUTOSAR standard, promoting clients' international competitiveness. In the personal portablemedical electronics field, Fujitsu Microelectronics has great successes in the electronic blood pressure monitor. We willcontinue to focus on the portable medical health device market, which is one of the target markets in 2010. We willintroduce the low-power consumption MB95F31X series with LCD driver to the portable health device market.

A sustainable economic rebound predicted

Andy Chang, Marketing Director of Fujitsu Microelectronics Ltd Asia

Now that the economy is gradually getting back on track in every country, we are seeing strong demand from theemerging markets while demands from Europe and America are recovering as well, especially the recovery of theconsumers' confidence. This is driving the semiconductor market back to the positive growth. Orders of FujitsuMicroelectronics in fourth quarter 2009 also saw a strong rebound. We have reason to believe that this rally issustainable.

External Storage/Blue-Ray CD-ROM Takes the Lead and USB 3.0 Advances Forwards

Issue 106, China New Telecommunications, December 2009

The information that Intel would postpone the delivery of USB 3.0 south-bridge chip sets was once viewed as the setbackfor the popularization of USB 3.0. However, high-resolution video/audio and external memory device manufacturersjumped at the introduction of USB 3.0 interfaces and hope that it can take them out of the dilemma of insufficienttransmission bandwidth. It also makes the development of USB 3.0 break away from the control of Intel.

Although Intel has postponed the launch time of USB 3.0 south-bridge chip sets from originally latter half year of 2010 to2011, many chip suppliers are itchy to occupy the market and view memory applications and Blue-Ray CD-ROMs aspioneer team for USB 3.0.

Intel Chip Sets are Unavailable, while USB 3.0 Develops at Full Speed

Figure 1. Biao Lu, marketing manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics, thought that full support for USB3.0 of board and cardmanufacturers has proved that the development of USB3.0 market doesn't completely depends on Intel.

Targeting the information that Intel would delay the release of USB 3.0 chip sets, Fujitsu Microelectronics, which focuseson USB 3.0 Device chip market, thought that it wouldn't significantly influence the development of USB 3.0. Biao Lu(figure 1), marketing manager of Fujitsu Microelectronics., pointed out that although it was repeatedly reported that Intelwill postpone the launch time of USB 3.0 south-bridge chip set to 2011, end-product manufacturers can get the solutionsfrom other USB 3.0 Host chip manufacturers even though chip giants, such as Intel, slightly change their strategies.Mainboard manufacturers, such as Asus, GIGA-BYTE and other leading suppliers, support USB 3.0 with practicalactions, actively implement the layout of USB 3.0, first build USB 3.0 control chip sets into new generation ofmainboards, and enter the time of USB 3.0 one year earlier.

Page 19: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com MICROELECTRONICS LIMITE… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... At the recent AUTOSAR Technology

Figure 2. Xinyi Chen, general manager of Zenitron Corporation, thought that the bandwidth of USB2.0 has failed to meetthe demand of new generation memory applications for a long time, so USB3.0 market will develop pretty well before Inteltakes initiative.

This market development is undoubtedly beneficial to Fujitsu Microelectronics, which is engaged in USB3.0 Device chipbusiness. So far, Fujitsu has actively cooperated with USB 3.0 Host chip manufacturers and makes the desktop andnotebook computers support USB 3.0 interface through externally connecting USB3.0-to-PCMCIA or USB3.0-to-PCIeconverters. Biao Lu thought that USB 3.0 would be surely accepted by the market in a short time and wouldn't beinfluenced by any temporary strategy. The support of board and card manufacturers is the most powerful evidence.

Zenitron Corporation is a chip distributor with SanDisk, Fresco and Fujitsu product lines, is also very optimistic about themarket opportunity brought by the combination of USB 3.0 and memory applications, and actively jockeys for position.Xinyi Chen (figure 2), general manager of Zenitron Corporation, indicated that their company has been in close contactwith mainboard and notebook computer manufactures in Taiwan Province in recent years and found that the demand ofthe devices for USB 3.0 solutions isn't influenced by the delayed release of Intel chip sets. Therefore, ZenitronCorporation has viewed USB 3.0 product line as one of revenue growth powers.

USB 2.0 is Losing Its Vigor and Memory Applications are too Impatient to Wait

Xinyi Chen indicated that the reason why the market responds to USB 3.0 so furiously is the bandwidth of up to 5Gbps.Take memory cards for example. The highest transmission speed of SD and CF cards from SanDisk makes USB 2.0become the performance bottleneck of system. In 2010 when new standard for SD card increases theoreticaltransmission speed up to 300Mbps, the bandwidth of USB 2.0 will fail to meet the demand.

Xinyi Chen thought that besides memory cards, external solid-state disk (SSD) and even built-in Blue-Ray CD-ROM ofnotebook computers and other new generation storage mediums will bring the challenges to the bandwidth of USB 2.0, sothe introduction of USB 3.0 is imperative. From the launch schedule of several leading USB 3.0 suppliers, the end of2009 will be a milestone for the commercialization of USB 3.0 and USB 3.0 market will grow rapidly in 2010.

Biao Lu also indicates that with the generalization of high resolution video/audio and explosive increase in the capacityof external memories, the size of files uploaded by the users can easily reach hundreds of Mbytes and this change willput USB 2.0 into the dilemma. This is also the reason why high-resolution video/audio and external memory manufactureseagerly demand for USB 3.0 and board and card manufacturers quickly jump into the market.

LightPeak/USB3.x may be Integrated with Each Other

LightPeak technology was first released at Intel Developer Forum (IDF) this autumn, has higher bandwidth than USB 3.0and is consequently viewed by many analysts as one of potential competitors to USB 3.0. Some people even thoughtthat Intel maybe plans to directly march on optical time.

Biao Lu doesn't agree with this viewpoint and thinks that LightPeak is still an emerging technology and has no globallyapplicable product standard and that there is a long way to go from the theory to implementation. In addition, USB 3.0 canuse both copper and optical fiber as transmission mediums. It is estimated that USB 3.0 with optical fiber as transmissionmedium will have 20~30 times higher bandwidth than USB 2.0 and can provide almost the same transmission rate withLightPeak.

In fact, just because USB 3.0 can also support optical fiber transmission and implement higher data transmission rate,USB 3.0 and LightPeak may be integrated with each other.

Operators demand open platform for set-top box

Cable TV operators are facing the shocks from live broadcast satellite, IPTV and satellite TV. How to maintain yourcustomers and strength their stickness to your product? HD (High definition) is to be an effective way. However, for somecable operators, it is also difficult to access to high-definition. Although there are 10 sets of free HD channels now, cablecompanies can neither get high-definition programming landing fees nor collect the money from end users.

For cable operators, there are three difficulties. Firstly, how to get profit after launching the HD program? Secondly, according to the requirements, the analog signal can not be stopped even after launching high-definition TV. However, ifthe operators are called to introduce HD without stopping the analog signal, how to solve the problem that frequencypoints are insufficient is still an issue. Lastly, there are few set-top boxes are free for the civilians and they have to payfor them. As the price of the HD set-top box is relative high, many customers are unwilling to afford it. If the customersfind less improvement after purchasing the HD set-top box, they will change back to the SD set-top box, which isdetrimental to high-definition promotion.

Currently, a lot of set-top boxes have already been sent to the customers and many operators have launched theiroperation. Some operators have tried the one-way mechanism but it is hard to improve user experience and find the newprofit increasing point. Though interactive can improve user experience and explore some new profit increasing point, itis not available for all the operators to achieve the interactive. It is because there is no two-way network conversion insome district and network conversion also needs large investment.

After launching the interactive program, where can the operator get the interactive resources? In order to solve thisproblem, the operators need open set-top box platform. Previously, when using only one platform, they will be tied up to itwithout freedom to choose others. The open set-up box platform solved this problem for them. The operators canintroduce a lot of set-top box manufacturers and can provide service for the content suppliers at the same time, which willbring more new business for them.

Fujitsu also consider about the HD area and have some actions. For example, for set-top box decoder, we support theH.264 and AVS, which is compatible with MPEG-2. In addition, we adopt the original video fidelity patented technologyand graphics hardware acceleration technology to ensure the significant improvement of the video quality compared toSD set-top box.

In industrial field, motor control, system control and instrument products are developing rapidly, are the result of advancein industrial automation and building intelligence, and require high MCU performance, high product quality and highperipheral integration. In this field, Fujitsu Microelectronics focuses on motor control, industrial variable frequencycontrol, industrial bus control (such as CAN bus control products), instruments and more. At present, FujitsuMicroelectronics' 8- and 16-bit MCUs are the main products in industrial field, and 32-bit MCUs also grow quickly. FujitsuMicroelectronics' MCUs for industrial applications feature rich product lines (including 8-, 16- and 32-bit MCUs), highperformance, high speed algorithm processing, high quality, high reliability and various integrated peripherals (forexample, the MCUs incorporate high-precision internal clocks, dedicated motor control modules, various communicationinterfaces, high performance analog devices and more), all of which meet the industrial demands.

In the field of medical electronics, Fujitsu Microelectronics attaches much importance to household medical instrumentsand portable medical products, such as electronic sphygmomanometer, electronic blood glucose test meter and so on.The consumers in this field demand for low power consumption, multi-segment LCD (liquid crystal) driver and rich set ofintegrated peripherals. Fujitsu Microelectronics recently launched 8-bit MCUs - MB95F318/378 series, which feature lowpower consumption and multi-segment LCD driver, are integrated with high-precision internal clocks, multi-channel UARTs(universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter), I2C interfaces, single-wire on-chip debug modules and Flash analogEEPROM (electronically erasable programmable read only memory), and can meet the requirements of portable medicalproducts.

(2)

We expect that Chinese white goods design of this year will feature energy conservation, environmental friendliness, high performance, high quality and fast update. These features will be reflected by Fujitsu Microelectronics' MCUs whichhave variable frequency control function and offer high performance-price ratio and product solutions. A large amount ofnew standards for power consumption of white goods will be released and executed this year. For example, newstandards for power consumption of air conditioners require that the control method should be improved or innovated, and variable frequency control will be the new technological trend of household appliances in the next few years. FujitsuMicroelectronics announced new 8-bit MCUs of MB95F330 series and 32-bit MCUs of MB91F492 series, which featurehigh-speed processing, rich peripherals, built-in hardware motor control modules, are easy to develop, support 120º and180º DC variable frequency control software algorithm, and are ideal for variable frequency control.

This year, home appliances to rural areas expand rural market, which demands for high quality and reasonable price.Fujitsu Microelectronics recently launched low pin count MCUs of MB95F200 series, which feature high quality and highperformance-price ratio, are easy to develop and are ideal for this market.

With the increased update rate and reduced development cycle of home appliances, the manufactures require thatelectronic component venders can provide not only MCUs, but also related product solutions. While promoting MCUproducts, application development team of Fujitsu Microelectronics also provides the corresponding solutions andactively cooperates with home appliance manufacturers. For example, we have begun to collaborate with nationalfamous home appliance manufacturers on variable frequency air conditioners, variable frequency washing machines, capacitive touch panels and high-power induction cookers.

Page 23: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com MICROELECTRONICS LIMITE… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... At the recent AUTOSAR Technology

(3)

To realize low power consumption, Fujitsu Microelectronics improves MCU cores, adjusts internal analog and digitaldevice design for MCU and adopts new wafer manufacturing process. With these measures, we have reduced operatingpower and standby power of MCU products to meet the demand for low power consumption.

We are expected to announce the MCUs for ultra low power consumption next year, such as ultra-low-power 8-bit LPCseries and 32-bit application ARM Cortex-M3 series of MCU cores for portable medical product, portable digital productand smoke sensor markets.

3. Fujitsu Microelectronics: strong advantage to fast response market demand

Based on the demand change of China home appliance market, Fujitsu Microelectronics introduces the according newproducts rapidly and obtains positive feedback from customers in China.

Fujitsu Microelectronics is the main MCU suppliers for China's white goods market. With the development trend of homeappliance to be smarter, more efficient and energy saving in China, Fujitsu Microelectronics earlier predicted the markettrend based on its years' accumulation: the inverter appliances will replace the traditional home appliances. Fujitsubegins to develop a series of new MCU product in 2008 including 8-bit, 16-bit and 32-bit products, and launched severalnew products to meet market demand this year.

China will release and implement several new standards on energy consumption for white goods in 2009, which makesthe inverter home appliances become a major technology trends in the next few years. Therefore, FujitsuMicroelectronics introduces 8-bit MCU-MB95F330 series and 32-bit MCU-MB91F492 series this year. These two seriesrealize a high processing speed and includes multiple peripherals, built-in hardware and motor control modules, whichmake the development easier. Meantime, the new product support 120 degree and 180 degree DC inverter controlsoftware algorithm and meet the needs of the inverter control applications completely.

At the same time, in response to the Rural Home Appliance Subsidies policy promoted by Chinese government to expanddomestic demand, Fujitsu Microelectronics has recently launched a low-pin MCU --- MB95F200 series. This series ofproducts are of great features including reliable quality, easy development and cost effective and are suitable to thecountryside markets.

In order to shorten product development time for customers in China, at the same time promote the MCU products, application development team of Fujitsu Microelectronics can also provide the corresponding solutions, and activelycooperate with the appliance manufacturers. For example, in 2009, the company have co-operation with the well-knownChinese home appliance manufacturers in the inverter air conditioner, inverter, washing machines, capacitive touchbuttons, as well as high-power Induction.

It is foreseeable that Fujitsu Microelectronics will obtain great development in the near future based on its activefollow-up to China's market demand as well as rapid response ability.

Battery Recharge Management: Flexible Suitability is of high importance

Different from the past electronic portable products which mainly used disposable batteries or alkaline batteries as powersupplies, today, most laptops, mobile phones or MP3/MP4 players use lithium ion, nickel-cadmium or nickel-hydrogenrechargeable batteries instead. This replacement does not only cut the cost but also protect the environment, and what ismore, it enlarges the capacity of the battery so as to obtain longer battery life. Because of the characteristics of therechargeable batteries, it presents new challenges for the system developers. The correct designs of the rechargingcircuits and good selection of electronic devices is essential for a longer battery life. Both external charger and internalrecharging management solution should be based on careful considerations of its specific usage.

Single-chip recharge management may become a mainstream solution Usually there are two ways in battery rechargingfor portables. One way is to use the host MCU of the system-self with a PWM, and the other way is to use highlyintegrated single-chip recharging management IC. Wang Yun, Fujitsu Microelectronics Marketing Manager, said in aninterview, "The greatest advantage of the single-chip recharging management IC is that it has a higher reliability, while theMCU + PWM solution is simpler and more cost effective." he explained, "System providers can compare the two optionsand choose the most suitable solution for them. In the long run, along with the decreasing of the costs and increasing ofthe external communication functions, the single-chip with more applications and more reliability will become popular".

Wang Yun

According to Wang Yun, Fujitsu positioned its recharge management products mainly above the 2Cell market, and thelaptop market is the biggest market for 2 ~ 4Cell applications.15 years ago, Fujitsu power management R & D team andFujitsu notebook R & D departments started co-works on the development of the laptop-oriented recharging managementIC. After several generations of developments and improvements, the new products of lithium battery rechargingmanagement IC---MB39A132 and MB39A134---are used by a large number of users in Taiwan and mainland China, andhave a good impact on the popular netbook market. He said, "Due to the events of rechargeable battery explosions in thepast, all notebook manufacturers have placed increasingly importance on the designs of recharging devices, they tend tochoose big brands for power management IC with high quality, stability and reliability.

However, Dr. Wu Xin, director of AC / DC Products from BCD Semiconductor Corporation, is more optimistic about theMCU + PWM solution. He believes that the circuit control solution for special recharge management IC is simple, but thefunction is limited, usually it only works on the lithium-ion battery with specific parameters, and different portable modelsare often using different lithium-ion batteries, if we use special chip, it will result in duplication developments and waste ofresources. He said, "Buck circuit with MCU + PWM is of low-cost with flexible control, and can be improved and upgraded in an easyway. In addition, it can be applied to any lithium-ion batteries."BCD Semiconductor is an analog signal IC manufacturer (IDM) in Greater China, engaged in power management ICdevelopment. Unlike the rest of the Fabless design company, BCD has a 6-inch wafer fab (including the manufactureprocess such as Bipolar, CMOS, BiCMOS, and BCDMOS), the combination of product design and advanced processingtechnology enabled BCD to optimize product performance and cost, so as to provide cost-effective application solutions.

In fact, the focus of BCD is on low-cost, high efficiency AC / DC off-line power adapter/charger control chip. The firstgeneration of primary-side controller AP370x series introduced by BCD, in 2006, is one of the first products of its kind onthe market. According to the report, AP370x is built around the primary-side control and output cable compensationproprietary technology, built-in temperature compensation and transformer primary side inductance compensation.Without opto-coupler and secondary feedback control circuit, it can also achieve high-accuracy voltage output andcurrent control, thereby greatly reduced the counts of components in power circuit and simplifying circuit design.Nowadays it has been successfully used in the chargers / adapters of mobile phones, wireless public telephone, cordlessphones and wireless routers and others. Wu Xin said, "In order to further improve the power conversion efficiency, reduce standby power consumption, we have further introduced the second generation of the primary side controllerAP376x series which meet the standard of five-star. The less then 30mW no-load power consumption can easily meet allthe charger / adapter efficiency and no-load criterions, including energy Stars EPS v2.0 and five-star standard of mobilephone charger."

The increasing diversities of power input

With the increasing variety of people's living environment, the rechargeable battery power supplies have beendiversified. Apart from 220V AC adapter, people also hope to recharge their various equipment batteries through USBinterface or vehicle power supplies without any interruption of their functions, which calls for a more flexible rechargecircuitry to accommodate a wider range of application environments.

Clearly, that presents a greater challenge to the system developers. "The challenge first comes from the wider operatingvoltage ranges required by charge-management IC, and this leads to higher voltage semiconductor process to carry outthe chip design." Wang Yun said, "The second challenge is the IC must be able to make corresponding adjustments ondifferent input powers, and be able to manage certain battery recharging and system power supplies ". He took theFujitsu MB39A132/134 charge management IC as an example, and illustrated the dynamic distribution of the input currentto ensure the system power supply and battery recharging can be hold simultaneously.

As the voltages and currents provided by AC adapter / USB / Car power supply are different, while the voltages and thecounts of rechargeable batteries are not quite the same, when the recharging voltage is higher than the supply voltage, avoltage boost is an necessary, and there's no such charging management IC which boosts and bucks in the market. Inaddition, while working and recharging at the same time requires a better anti-jamming design for the management IC. Inthe case of low battery voltage the recharging current must be higher than the discharging current to ensure to "makeends meet". "In respect of charging IC design, the current challenges include: 1, how to further improve the conversionefficiency and lower standby power consumption; 2, how to effectively manage multi-channel power supply and load; 3,how to shorten the recharging time and at the same time to ensure the battery life; 4, how to further expand the flexibleconfigurations of recharging control method, in order to adapt to different types of battery ". Xin Wu added.

He believes that the market for portable chargers such as cell phone charger is a relatively mature and stable, while

Page 26: If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> - fujitsu.com MICROELECTRONICS LIMITE… · If you can't read the mail, please visit here >> ... At the recent AUTOSAR Technology

domestic producers are long in manufacturing but short in R&D. The charger's profit margin is small, so the cost controlpressure is high and the willingness of acceptance for new technologies is also relatively low. In recent years, becauseof the increasing public awareness of environmental protection, the government and various environmental organizations, agencies, including the cell phone maker themselves, have put forward a number of environmental standards related toenergy-saving charger, such as, mobile phones and recharge converters and interface technology requirements and testmethods issued by the MII, (YD/T1591-2006), Energy Star EPS2.0, mobile phone charger grading standards, etc., all ofwhich aimed at reducing the waste of resources, improving energy efficiency and reducing idle load. The introduction ofthese standards stepped up the technological innovations for charger products to a large extent.

"The major difficulty faced by Chinese manufacturers is the inadequate of technical practice, and they are unable to fullyunderstand the requirements of charge design." Wang Yun said, "And the functions of charge management ICs fromdifferent makers are not the same, users have little knowledge about new products, designers have difficulty to get in.The solution for these problems is to further promote the products and technologies by the manufacturers, to providemultiple technical supports to designers, and let the designers to master the Charge Management Technology as soon aspossible."

Engineers attached a great importance on the notebook recharge management IC designs. Otherwise, once somethingwrong, it will cost a lot of time and energy, so early detection of problems during R&D is critical. Wang Yun said, Fujitsunot only provides evaluation board for the clients, but also developed a laptop power supply design evaluation system, aslong as the clients providing a complete circuit, the clients can check any problems that may occur in advance to reducedevelopment risk.

The global financial tsunami occurred in the second half of last year have a big impact to the consumer electronics."However, we are delighted to find out that consumer electronics has stared to recover ahead of the overall economy. Inparticular, benefited from the state policy of financial subsidies for household appliances, the markets of notebookcomputers and LCD TVs have quickly recovered." Wang Yun said. "Next year we will continue to increase the powermanagement IC investment, and will offer a new generation of charge management products. In recent years, newenergy technologies developed continuously, and battery technology attracted much of the attention, lithium batteries /lithium iron batteries will be applied to more and more products. Power management IC with more security, high-precision,multi-protection, external communication functions, cell balancing and multiple sets of batteries wide voltage input willtake the lead in the battery management technology in the future. "

Power management using high-integrated programmable logic devices

The most serious challenge for energy-saving design is using microprocessor to manage power supply. Microprocessorsare not optimized for power management, and they must deal with too many instructions. As the reaction is slow, thermalbreakdown will be occurred, even a sudden or catastrophic circuit board and system failure may happen. Although powermanagement with microprocessor has been the traditional approach, logic power management is faster and morereliable.

In April 2009, Lattice Semiconductor introduced the new products of Power Manager II series, among which, the POWR1220AT8 provided an excellent solution for power monitoring, power dressing and voltage measurements. Thisprogrammable device can replace the reset generator, control IC, watch dog timer, sequencing / tracking, hot-plugintegrated circuits and many other ICs, it provides the users with necessary tools and functionality to meet the greenstandards of energy-saving in the areas of large-scale base stations, high-end servers and small single-board computeretc. The energy-saving rate may different according to each specific design, but 30% energy-saving is most common. .Turning off the non-function parts on the circuit board, and reducing the power consumed by IC when the load is low, is animportant way to reduce power consumption. The Highly Integrated Programmable Power Manager II included the voltagemonitor IC into a single device, which cuts down the cost and raised reliability. For example, Power Manager II 1220AT8monitors up to 12 circuit board power supplies, and provides up to 20 open-drain digital output and 8 DC-DC trim / marginoutput. Using the 48 on-chip macro-cell CPLD and 4 programmable timers, the device is able to generate CPU resetsignals including pulse tailing and power failure interruption. Four out of its twenty outputs can be configured forhigh-voltage MOSFET drivers. There are also six general-purpose digital inputs that can be used for other controlfunctions.

The advantage of this design is that it can be used as the standard power management solution in any power-sensitiveplatform. The efficiency of establishing such a standard solution on the platforms and product lines is obvious and theeffect can be seen both from the design time and the number of the required devices. The demands for energy-savingdevices in the past few years greatly increased, and this trend will continue. It is expected that the integrated, programmable power management devices will be more widely used.

The next generation of power management devices from Lattice Semiconductor will be more integrated with morefeatures. They are not only support power management, but also enable the management of the circuit board itself. Itsfunction will be expanded to cover temperature monitoring, fan control, NV error log, user logic and system interfaces.Apart from power management products, the company also offers a range of low-power programmable logic devices, including ispMACH 4000KZE ultra-low-power CPLD and LatticeECP3 FPGA series, which is only about half the cost andpower consumption than the other FPGA with SERDES features.
