Pastor’s Letter for June 2018 Newsletter

“Joyfully give thanks to the Father, who has enabled you to share in the inheritance of the saints in the light.” Colossians 1:12

What do you think is the point of an inheritance? Why do people pass things on to the next generation? Usually I think an inheritance has these essential pieces – they are given in love, they are passed on because the giver of the gift thinks the gift has value, they are given with an eye toward the future.

God has certainly passed on to us a great treasure and he has done it out of love and he has done it in order to provide for our future. The treasure of our salvation is an inheritance that we want to keep passing on for generation after generation. The great blessing of this inheritance is that it never gets used up or devalued. We can benefit from it as much as our ancestors did and even if we use our faith day in and day out there will still be enough for our children and their children, in fact, using this gift helps it to grow!

One thing about an inheritance is that it causes us to both look back to the origination of the gift and it causes us to look forward to those who will use it when we are gone. Our life together as Christians is always rooted in that Easter event so long ago, the good news of Jesus risen from the dead. As we celebrate our little Easters all year long, we are also focused on the future. We are excited about opportunities like the Community Summerfest and VBS which give us the opportunity to share our inheritance of faith.

As you are planning your activities for this summer remember your inheritance and think about how you are living out your calling to pass the gift of faith along. God has sent His Holy Spirit to nurture that gift as we worship together so that we will be vibrant witnesses for the generations yet to come. Let us pray for our congregational outreach as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ our Savior.

See you at worship! Pastor Sally

SPECIAL APPEAL FOR June Shallow Wells Once again this year, we are supporting the Shallow Well Project to support the construction of wells in Tanzania and other African regions. To make a donation, use an envelope from the pew and include your name and ‘water’ on it & drop it in the offering basket please. (To receive credit on your giving statement, please make checks payable to Saint Paul Lutheran Church.) Thanks for your support of this worthy cause. Sympathy is extended to the families of: Velma Robarge, Lorna Myers & Warren Adams. We are praying for the comfort of the Holy Spirit and give thanks for the hope of the resurrection through Christ Our Lord.

Please call the church office if you or a loved one is in the hospital, we do not usually get informed of your stay by any of the hospitals even if you are registered under our congregation’s name, and we

want to make sure you get pastoral care. Thank you! RECENTLY HOSPITALIZED MEMBERS Tom Davidson, Donald Fake, ~ please keep these members in your prayers.

Starting June 1 Chuck Mann will have a summer break from internship. He will begin his extra responsibilities with us when his classes resume in September. We pray that this summer will afford he and his family time for relaxation after a busy year. Thanks to the congregation for your support of this ministry. We will of course see Chuck, Stephanie, Isaac and Bella in their other role as church members and can continue to pray for them during this time of transition.

Prayer Corner

From The World of Prayer by Ditlev Monrad Reading IV: Ditlev Gothard Monrad (1811-1887)

There is perhaps no better way to learn the state of our soul than to note how we say the Lord’s Prayer. If the words come easily, half thoughtlessly, from our lips, it testifies to great immaturity, to sloth and indifference, for they are such weighty words, so rich in content!...When we thank God for all his blessings, we must reckon the Lord’s Prayer as one of the greatest, for it is so wonderfully adapted to all ages, all conditions, all moods. If we were born into a Christian home, we do not remember the first time we prayed it, as little as we remember the first time we saw our father and mother. So much else changes and grows old, but it is eternally young and grows in strength as the years pass. So much else has failed us, but it was our faithful guide through all vicissitudes. They are the same words, repeated again and again, yet how they can change their shape…How flexibly it fits itself to our needs while remaining always the same, ever embraced and borne up by the words “Our Father”! We desire no higher wisdom than to be able to pray our Lord’s prayer with ever greater sincerity and inwardness, and we do not wish to die with any other prayer on our lips. Therefore, we thank thee, our God, for Our Lord’s Prayer.

Praise God for a safe and successful MIVO trip in April!

On June 3rd the MIVO team that recently returned from their mission work will present a summary of their trip during the Sunday School hour in Fellowship Hall. Please plan to join us to thank them for their work and to hear the latest about the ministry conducted there.
