If We Had A Time Machine, How could We have Helped?

Connecting to Other Natural Disasters.

 Facts about the eruption:

- Erupted sometime around the 24th of August, of 79 A.D.-Mt. Vesuvius (volcano) buried Pompeii in twenty meters of ash and pumice-Pompeii lies next to Herculaneum-Death toll = 10,000+  Why people didn't leave, was simpily because they didn't think anything bad was to come. By the time it got bad, they would have never made it out alive. They were buried under lots of ash, and were killed. The air was also very thick because of the falling ash and debris, so people were suffocating.suffocated

How could America have helped?

- The people of Pompeii didn't know that Vesuvius was a volcano, so letting them know that it was dangerous could have saved them their life.- America could have sent out boats on the Bay of Naples to get people away from Vesuvius, and to places where they couldnt get hurt by the falling ash.

More ways America could have helped    -Pliny was a witness of the eruption, and recorded it in letters talking about Vesuvius, and how his uncle was trying to help. If we could have helped, we should have gotton more people to write down what they were going through so that we would have it as recorded history.     -If people were staying in their houses then they were bound to die. Their houses did not have strong enough roofs to suport the house, causing it to crumble and kill the people inside of the house. If we were to build better and more stable houses for them, then they could have had a chance of living.

Other World Wide Disasters Related to VESUVIUS!

Haiti, Katrina, Tsunami...

There have been many other natural disasters around the world!

Such as:• Earthquake in Haiti, 2010• Hurricane Katrina,  2005• Mt. St. Helens eruption, 1980• Tsunami in Indonesia, 2004

Similar? Earthquake in Haiti

Deaths: 200,000How is this similar? The Haiti earthquake is similar because the people there didn't  know that an earthquake was coming. Just like the Romans didn't know Vesuvius was a volcano or that it was going to erupt. Also, because this disaster killed many people and so did the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius. Therefore, we know that this natural disaster in 2010, was just as effective as the one in 79 A.D.

Similar? Hurricane Katrina

Deaths: 1,836How is this similar?Hurricane Katrina was similar because both events are famous natural disasters that are still remembered today. It is also similar because many people fled, and others stayed while these events happened. One last connection is that they caused major damage to the cities. As you can see, Katrina is just like Vesuvius!

Similar? Mt. St. Helens

Deaths: 57

How is this similar? This is similar because Mt. St. Helens is a volcano just like Mt. Vesuvius. Another similarity is that they were both first identified as something suspicious by the dark clouds around it. This is why it is similar to Mt. Vesuvius eruption.

Similar?  2004 Tsunami

Indonesia deaths:  122,232Missing: 113,937India deaths:  10,776Missing: 5,640Sri Lanka:  30,974Missing: 4,698Thailand deaths: 5,395Missing: 2,993Somalia deaths: 150Myanmar deaths: 59

As you can see by the data on the left, many other places were effected by the tsunami.  Just like more than one place was effected by the eruption of the volcano Mount Vesuvius.  During the eruption Pompeii and Herculaneum were affected.

If We Had A Time Machine?

If we had a time machine, we could go back in time to help the people survive the Vesuvius eruption.  Just like we have helped all of the victims in other natural disasters, we would warn them.  That way they would know that the worst is coming.  Like we said before, the ancient pompeiians were buried in several feet of ash, and trapped in their homes.  We could help by bringing them medical masks to keep the dusty air out of their lungs while trying to flee.  If we could warn them, we would save hundreds of peoples live.

In Conclusion

In conclusion, what happened, and what has happened since were terrible things that occurred.  No one could prevent them.  If we had a time machine, we could prevent one of he worst historic natural disasters ever reported.
