The leXsolar-PV Medium offers a wide range of experiments involving photovoltaics. It is an inexpensive and compact pro-duct and allows qualitative research using consumer modules like the buzzer or engine. Additionally, the product allows the use of more challenging experiments like measuring the cha-racteristics or the temperature dependency of a solar cell.

The leXsolar-PV Medium is not expandable and includes, un-like its bigger brother the leXsolar-PV Large, a bit less scope of delivery. Therefore, it is the cheapest PV-product in its class.

The insert offers space for two digital multimeters, a pow-er supply device as well as slotted lines. All components are available separately, too. But it is also possible to use the stan-dard equipment that schools normally own.

Correlating school physics with practical usage of the photovoltaic cells is a specialty of this system. These unique didactic innovations are the premier choice when it comes to experiments related to solar energy since it has won the Worlddidac Award.

The system has been conceived in such a way that most experiments can be conducted in normal room lighting. An external current is not necessary for these experiments. The leXsolar lighting module (included) is required only for a few experiments – which can be operated with a students’ power supply.

Additionally, the product is expandable with „Measurements without Measuring“. This expansion allows further qualitative experiments for stu-dents between the ages of 12 to 15.

See the following page for a detailed scope of the delivery.

One focus of the product is the so called off-grid PV-Systems which are independent from the electricity kit. With the aid of leXsolar –PV Professional such solar off-grid systems can be built for training purposes. According to the modular structure the specific behavior of the single components can be analyzed in every detail: for example the switching threshold of a series regulator or a shunt regulator. The included MPP-Tracker facilitates, especially through the integrated manual mode, a very descriptive understanding of the very important principle of MPP-Tracking in practice. With the aid of the PWM charge regulator, the battery or the condenser can be pulse charged

to demonstrate the principle of the pulse width modulated battery charging. An inverter demonstrates the generation of an alternating voltage from a solar voltage module. The product is well-rounded with a variety of electrical loads including one ultra-bright LED and one light bulb between which their efficiency can be compared. A radio, which can also be directly run with the solar module helps to increase attention.

This system provides you with all the answers you need concer-ning the basics of using wind energy. With the help of curriculum-based trials, it discusses different topics, which are necessary for understanding the functions of wind power plants. The study of how wind force, wind direction or rotor type influences the power output are only some examples of possible experiments. Both qualitative experiments – for students from age of 11 through 13 and complete quantitative trials for physics lessons until the age of 19 – are described in detail. For the qualitative trials, the expansion “Measurements without Measuring“ is required.

• Dependence of the wind power plant on wind speed• Variation of the generated voltage produced by changing the load• Analysis of wind speed in front of and behind the rotor• Dependence of the power output of a wind turbine on number of blades (qualitative and quantitative)• Influence of the rotor blade profile on the power output of a wind turbine (qualitative and quantitative)• Dependency of the power output of a wind turbine on blade pitch (qualitative and quantitative)• Effincency determination of a wind power plant• Saving energy• Energy conversion and use of wind energy• Analysis of different rotor types (Savonius-rotor and impeller)• Characteristics of the wind generator• Dependence of the wind generator on wind direction

For the most of the experiments manuals with different difficulty levels are available: qualitative experi-ments for the grades 5 to 8 and quantitative manuals for older students. The expansion “Measurements without Measuring” (Item-No. 1106) is necessary for the qualitative experiments.

As of now all products of the leXsolar-Wind range will be delivered with a new set of rotor blades. With the aid of these blades the following parameters of the wind turbine within the experiment can be varied:

• blade profile (optimized profile and “windmill vane”)• number of blades at the rotor (1,2, 3 or 4 blades)• blade pitch (20°, 25°, 30°, 50° and 90°)

The rotor blades are sympathized with reality regarding blade profile and blade twisting and therefore the only ones in the educational material market who make realistic experiments concerning wind power possible.

• Heat convection tube• Spirit stove• Solar collector (260 mm * 200 mm/ 10 inch * 8 inch)• Thermo siphon tank with hose• Thermometer• Manual• Infrared light source with holder • Stand, stage clamp, clamp and sleeves

The most important component of the kit is the solar collector, which can be used for the conversion of radiant energy to heat using water as an energy source. The solar collector consists of the following components:

• Special frame with threaded holes for either vertical or inclined positioning• Two removable glass windscreens which help to decrease losses based on

convection.• Blackened helix coils made of Plexiglas, six-fold curved with two ports for quick

acting coupling• Black / White lacquered collector back (interchangeable)• Styrofoam-insulation board (also individually removable) with integrated

thermometer

The collector can be powered with both sunlight as well as the enclosed infrared light source. After about 30 min of irradiation, a water temperature difference of circa 20°C (68°F) can be measured. As soon as the elevated is connected via the enclosed hose with the solar collector, a heat convection based on temperature-dependent differences of density will start a water cycle. Therefore, a heat circuit starts up. With the heat exchanger, consisting of copper pipe spiraled inside of a transparent plastic container; the caloric energy can be transmitted from one liquid to another. The transport of water through the spiral exchanger will be supported by a circulating pump, which can be mounted on the collector.

The topics of energy efficiency and saving energy are the key elements for a successful realization of a renewable energy supply, because the bare replacement of capacities for gene-rating energy is virtually impossible. Also the demand has to be reduced. The tracking and the use of saving potentials – wi-thout losing comfort - is the goal of the leXsolar-ESave.
