Through the combined ef-forts of IES, our student council, and two volun-teers, I spent an amazing Sunday after-noon making sushi. This was something that was on my per-sonal bucket list and some-thing I know that no one

else had the opportunity to experience yet. It was one more thing that only Japan would be

able to offer.

We met at Kemiga-wahama Station at noon. It would be three more short hours until I would be able to taste the fruit of my labors. But first I would have to make it. We walked to the Culture Center where we met the two

wonderful volunteers, Aoki-san and Mitsuhashi-san. After setting up, it was time to begin. First we watched them make the sushi. It was a little intimidating how fast and precise they were. Steps were soon building in my head, “Put the pink rice on the egg, roll the egg, roll the egg roll on the second egg; separately, take the sea-weed and put rice on it, add seaweed strips and vegetables; then place the large egg roll on top,

roll it altogether, and cut”.

After I had these instructions down, it was finally our turn. The steps looked easy enough, but then they were just done by professionals. When my partner – Rebekah Percival – and I tried, we realized how exact everything has to

be. But after a few slight mishaps – nothing that couldn’t be undone – we cut our sushi and were presented with rolls with perfect rose

shapes.

After this, we learned two more sushi rolls and then tried them ourselves. We were able to create a daisy shape as well as a daisy with a stem and leaves. While we were cleaning up, the volunteer made a special sushi roll just for us – a panda! With everything clean, it was time to eat our artwork. And believe me, they were worth the time and effort! Thank you IES for allowing me to have this unforgettable op-

portunity!

春学期の学生の強い希望から、千葉の郷土料理である祭り寿司を、ホストファミリーをしていただ

いている青木さんと、ご友人の三橋さんに教えていただきました。料理好きな学生が集まり、楽し

く習った日本の郷土料理、アメリカに帰っても是非作ってみてくださいね。参加した学生の中から

Kyriちゃん（ピッツバーグ大学）がその日の体験をまとめてくれました。

春学期2回目の文化体験は、6月29日、御徒町にある工房にお邪魔しての七宝焼き

体験でした。最初はみんなうまくできるか心配していましたが、どの学生も自分で

デザインした素敵なペンダントを完成させていました！学生たちの作品はお店のHP

Over half of the stu-dents were accom-panied by IES staff to Mobara, Chiba for a 3-day homestay program. Although the program was relatively brief, it was filled with lasting experiences. Upon arriving, students

were able to roam freely through downtown Mobara and get a feel for the town. Next, they were paired with their host fam-ilies, and watched a traditional song/dance performance by ‘Tsutsujigumi,’ a

local dance team. Then, the students excitedly returned home with their new families!

The following day was dedicated to travel-ing and spending quality time with host fami-lies. Some students with to the famous Otaki Castle, whereas others hung out at the beach. Whether the dining was homestyle, kaiten zu-shi, or Italian, the students were all raving about the deliciousness of every meal they had in Mobara!

On the third and final day, the host families brought the students to a banquet hall for a farewell party. Before entering, students

worked on tanzaku, writing their wishes for the upcoming Tanabata festival. A feast ensued, followed by a riveting performance by a local taiko group. Upon bidding farewell, it was not uncommon to see tears shed, both from our students and their respective families!

This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was made possible thanks to the cooperation of over 20 Mobara families. IES is grateful for the passion and generosity of these families, and for the hard work that Ensemble Mobara pro-vided to allow for an organized and effective program.

The most amazing thing that I obtained through the intern-

ship in IES Tokyo is learning Japanese culture from the students’

perspectives. It was tough to explain about Japanese topics,

even though I was born and raised in Tokyo. I still had reverse

culture shock when the internship started I myself had just come

back from studying abroad in the United States. I applied to the

internship because I wanted to support foreign students the way

I was while abroad, but I was shocked to realize that there are

still a lot of things that I did not know about my country. This

internship, as a whole, strengthened my motivation to learn

about Japan and Japanese as well as obtaining English skill.

Through working as the program assistant, I became more

and more proud of my country. Moreover, I held a dream that I

would get a job to support foreigners in Japan after I graduate

college. This internship gave me an opportunity to take an objec-

tive look at the culture that I depend on, as well as the precious

memories that I was able to make with the students.

今回の夏プログラムは通常のスタッフのほかに5人の短期スタッフ

が関わってくれていました。その中から神田外語大学に通う山本み

きさんがプログラムを終えて感じたこと伝えてくれました。

夏学期、プログラム中は都内の研修センターで寮生活をしている学生たち

が、楽しみにしているものの一つが千葉県茂原市でのホームステイ！今回も

多くの学生が参加し、日本の家族生活を体験しました。学生たちの体験を夏

スタッフのAnishさんがレポートしてくれました！

On June 8th, IES Tokyo Center held its very first re-

union party. For the night, 14 alumni came to join us. It

was so great to see everyone after the programs. It was

also mazing to hear that they were still in touch with the

families and friends they met here while studying abroad

back then. We also invited our former director Dr. Malik

and celebrate his 79th birthday!!

Tokyo Center welcomes about 150 students every

year with several programs. It is one of the fortunate

centers at IES that many of the students decide to come

back for live/work or even just for traveling!

6月8日、東京センターで初となる同窓会が開催されま

した。現在日本で生活している中から14人の学生がこの記念

すべき日に、懐かしの海浜幕張まで足を運んでくれました。

東京センターでは平均で150人前後の学生を毎年受け入

れさまざまなプログラムを運営しています。学生たちの帰国

後、仕事やさらなる勉強、旅行などで日本に帰ってくる学生

たちの近況が知れるのは、留学団体としてとてもうれしいこ

とです。

同じセンターに留学しながらもプログラム自体は違った

学生も多く、今回の同窓会を通して新しい友人も増えまし

た。
