“Life’s challenges are not supposed to paralyze you; they’re supposed to help you discover who you are.”

How to discover this in the New Year 2013?

Really the Old Year has gone. The New Year has taken possession of the clock of time. When we look back, yesterday was a dream and tomorrow is only a vision. But we can make every yesterday a dream of happiness and every tomorrow a vision of hope if we live well today. To attain success in our endeavour, ‘we must first improve, to improve we must first practice, to practice we must first learn, and to learn we must first fail’. It is a basic statement. We have to accept finite disappointment without losing infinite hope. It is because, for a majority of people, failure is an opportunity to begin again more wisely and sensibly. Anyhow, we all have to do our duties during the coming twelve months of the year promptly without fail. For this we are supposed to live each day as we would climb a mountain with an occasional glance toward the summit keeping the goal in our mind, observing panoramic views around us thus diminishing the exhaustion of climbing.

New Year is a time for new beginnings and learning experiences for all of us. We have to begin with doing great things by impulse bringing together a series of small things. That we don’t have enough time is a lame excuse. As, we have exactly the same number of hours per day as availed by those who had done wonders in their lifetime. ‘Time has no divisions to mark its passage. There is never a thunder-storm or blare of trumpets to announce the beginning of a new month or year’. In this juncture, what we always require at the start of a new adventure is not to wait for time but initiate with motivations and boosting our morale. Many occasions become more precious when we have things to ponder upon. Our finest moments are most likely to occur when we are feeling deeply uncomfortable, unhappy, or unfulfilled. Along with this, the stories of the past courage can offer hope and provide inspiration in us.

Dear Members

It is the end of another eventful year for IEEE Kerala Section. The year 2012 has brought a significant amount of recognition to the Section, and has ended with one of the largest events that IEEE Kerala Section has organized so far, INDICON 2012.

INDICON 2012 was a resounding success not just from the number of papers presented--which was significant enough, at about 900 submissions and close to 240 final presentations - but also from several other perspectives. First, it brought together a set of senior IEEE Dignitaries, including the 2013 President, Peter Staecker and a past IEEE President, Michael Lightner, the IEEE CS 2012 & 2013 Presidents, and senior IEEE staff as well as global and R10 leaders in different domains to Kerala Section. Second, it provided a rich set of ancillary events including the first-ever IEEE CS All-India Student Congress, GOLD Entrepreneurship Summit, the WiE track, the E4C/SIGHT track, and the Educational Symposium. Thirdly, several India Council events took place during the Conference, with participation from several Sections from around the country.

It is gratifying to note that these set of events were managed by volunteers from the Section without any external event manager on behalf of the Section, I thank the Advisory Committee members, Track Chairs, Reviewers, Chairs of different Committees, and volunteers from IEEE and other institutions, who were instrumental in planning, organizing and conducting this excellent event. We are also thankful to the excellent co-operation and support from the Director, Principal, faculty members and volunteers of Rajagiri School of Engineering and Technology, which hosted the event.

Kerala Section has also made its impact in terms of most metrics of activity within IEEE, including membership growth, size, activity profile, affinity groups (such as WIE and GOLD), student activities, technical society activities, and humanitarian activities. Some areas where Kerala Section can make improvements are enhancement of share of professional members, increasing the number of technical societies and affinity groups, increasing Senior Members & Fellows, ensuring even more awards & recognitions, and finding roles for Section members in higher-level IEEE structures. We have to focus on these areas for the

future, while continuing the current vibrancy of activities.

It is with a profound sense of satisfaction that I step down from two years of chairing IEEE Kerala Section. I thank all members for the co-operation extended to me and my team. I request members to continue their contributions to the Section and help the incoming leaders to take the Section to even greater heights.

Wishing all members a very productive 2013!

Satish Babu Chair, Kerala Section

Moreover, when we think about life it is not easy for any one of us to encounter. Challenges are more than what we expect in general. Throughout our journey in life we have to face numerous challenges, problems and setbacks. Sometimes new challenges need a whole new set of strategies to survive and prosper in the venture. For this, we must have perseverance and above all, confidence in ourselves. Knowing how to solve problems, how to get by, how to identify an advantage and seize it are all qualities we inherited, hidden skills we have to rediscover. But to enhance this, functions of intellect are insufficient without courage, love, friendship, compassion, and empathy. If we accept that we are persistent, strong and resilient we will keep trying until we prove our beliefs are true. We must believe that we are gifted for something and that thing, at whatever cost, must have to be gained to craft every tomorrow a vision of hope.

I hope we are prepared for the fabulous and dedicated volunteerism through our professional body in the New Year. Wish you all a very happy and prosperous new beginning for more innovations and achievements in the current year too, especially in the global arena.

‘To accomplish great things, we must not only act but also dream, not only plan, but also believe’.

Road Map to Success in Engineering Studies

As an outreach programme of IEEE, a one day programme on “Road map to Success in Engineering Studies” was organized jointly by Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Malabar Subsection and Institution of Engineers Kozhikode Centre on 16th June 2012. It was inaugurated by A Achuthan, Civil Engineer and Environmentalist at 10.00 hrs at Sports Council Conference Hall, Mananchira, Kozhikode. In his inaugural address, he highlighted the need for social commitment on the part of the engineers. The

commitment to profession has two sides, one to oneself and the other to the society at large. Only those who keep both in their professional activities will be respected by all.

In the morning session, S Gopa-kumar, Former Deputy Director VSSC Thiruvananthapuram gave a presentation for the need for good communication and interpersonal skills for engineers. Even if you are technically knowledgeable, unless you have good communication skills, you are not going to be a successful professional, he stated. K P Mohandas, former Dean, N I T

IEEE Industry Applications Society, SBC, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham, Kollam

The Industry Applications Society (IAS) Student Branch Chapter of Amrita Vishwa Vid-yapeetham, Kollam, was formed on 9th November 2012. Ever since the formation, the chapter is active and conducts various activities that bridge the gap between theory and practice. The first meeting of IEEE-IAS was presided by Srikanth V, Advi-sor, IAS chapter, Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham. The main objec-tive was to select the committee members. Currently the chapter is having 16 student members with Murali Krishnan K as Chair-man and Aryamol Sudhakaran as Vice Chair. The patron of the

chapter is P.S. Chandramohanan Nair, SMIEEE, Chair- Professional Activities Committee - Kerala Section. Within this short period our students could manage to organize few talks which cover the today’s most relevant topics like Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency Considerations, etc.

On 16th October 2012 an invited talk by Jayakumar Nair, Principal Consultant of Sustenergy Foundation was organized in the campus with a participation of 60 graduate and undergraduate students. The talk is based on “Integrated Energy Management Methodology”. Decades of experience of Jayakumar in the

field of electrical engineering, energy management systems and methodologies for corporate, technical training on energy conservation and management to business analysis, problem solving and manufacturing cost optimization were presented before the engineer’s of future.

Jayakumar Nair is the founder member – SEEM, Executive Committee Member – SEEM (Society of Energy Engineers & Managers – TN Chapter), recipient of Kerala State Energy Conserva-tion Commendation Certificate 2008 in the category of Certified Energy Managers and recipient of Kerala State Energy Conservation Commendation Certificate 2010 in the category of Research & Innovation.

Elaborating on a mathematical tool, Sustenergy Pyramid, he dis-cussed how an integrated energy management methodology could help with energy conservation. Energy audits, Reengineering and in-house management, can all be supported through this tool. “Through proper energy

management, we can save nearly 25%-30% of energy per day’’, remarked Jayakumar. Implement-ing a systematic approach for energy conservation is not just for reduction in cost, but also for deriving the most out of conven-tional sources of energy, which most people currently use.

On 14th November 2012, the chapter in association with the IEEE- Professional Activities Committee, Kerala Section could organize an invited talk on “Safe Switching for Operation and Maintenance” by Erling Hesla, LSMIEE, Power System Consult-ant, Seattle, USA. Hesla’s indus-trial and consultancy experience in power system covers five decades.

The seminar provides a practical approach specifying details of switching procedures for operating power system and for maintenance. Impact on system reliability due to changes in switching configuration is covered in depth as is the requirement for maintaining power to essential loads. The seminar addresses how to utilize rigorous calculation of system performance with or without computer programmes as well as how to maintain documentation and control of switching procedures. The feedback from all the 70 attendees, were an inspiration for the chapter to do more successful events.Addressing by Jayakumar Nair

The talk by Magyar was based on “The Electric Car and the Renewable Energy Sources - Hype or Solution?” Magyar asked does the electric car really save energy, decrease the carbon dioxide emission and the environmental pollution? What kind of technical, economical, political and customer aspects affect that the recent development does not obtain broad acceptance? Is it possible to change this trend by using renewable energy sources? The lecture gives an overview

about the automotive structure, energy and electricity generation issues and the impact of the increasing use of renewable energy sources in Germany. Attributes of some newly developed electric cars was demonstrated and the political and economical issues of the conventional and renewable energy sources was critically discussed from the point of view of an electrical engine.

The development of transpo- rtation vehicles is one of the greatest achievements of modern

technology. Especially the automobile has become an important part of everyday life because of providing individual mobility for the public. However, the large number of automobiles in use has caused serious problems for the society and has been considered responsible for air pollution, global warming and intensive use of the limited oil resources. The interaction of developers, manufacturers, energy authorities, politics, media and customers is increasing the

interest and the pressure on the development of new, green solutions, among others electric cars hoping to solve all of the above listed problems by using electrical drive train technologies.

The talk by Narayanan A.M is based on “Energy Efficiency Con-siderations in Power Systems”. Narayanan A.M. is the Divisional Head of Energy management Centre, Dept. of Power, Govt. of Kerala, also he is a Certified Energy Manager and Auditor by BEE, Govt. of India. He has about twenty eight years of techno-managerial and business admin-istration experience in regulatory, energy management and large EPC energy projects.

The seminar mainly focused on improving the energy ef-ficiency in generation, transmis-sion and distribution. As power density in modern data centers increases, more focus has been placed on improving efficiency in

the power distribution infrastruc-ture. Dramatic changes, such as switching to 400V or DC distribu-tion systems, have been explored, but there are some practical and affordable options to significantly improve efficiency without mak-ing major changes to the existing power delivery infrastructure.

The start of activities of this new IAS SBC is marked by these events. A new initiative, the Facebook page of “Industry Application Society SB Chapter AVV” was also launched. These activities clearly indicate the en-thusiasm of the IAS members of this budding chapter Those who are interested in sharing the ac-tivities, comments and other kind of information are encouraged to contact the chapter.

Ultra-stretchable Fibers

With Electrical Conductivity in-tact

Compiled by: n T nair, Life Senior Member, IEEE and Chief Editor, Executive Knowledge Lines monthly

Electronic textiles (e-textiles or smart textiles) are fast emerging as a major area in textile industry. These fabrics will have electronic sensors, digital circuits with computing and/ or communication capabilities etc. embedded in them to do specific functions - say, for example, monitoring body’s vital parameters like temperature, blood pressure etc. The field of embedding advanced electronic components onto textile fibers is also called fibertronics. One of the fundamental requirements in such fabrics is to have the ability to stretch some of the interwoven fibers that are required to conduct electrical signals among the digital components.

Now researchers led by Michael Dickey, assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at North Carolina State University, have created a wire that retains its electrical conductivity even when stretched eight times its length. The fibers consist of a liquid metal alloy, eutectic

gallium indium (EGaIn), injected into the core of stretchable hollow fibers composed of a triblock copolymer, poly[styrene-b- (e thylene-co-butylene) -b-styrene] (SEBS) resin. The hollow fibers are easy to mass-produce with controlled size by using commercially available melt processing methods. The fibers are similar to conventional metallic wires (metal core, surrounded by polymeric insulation), but can be stretched orders of magnitude further while retaining electrical conductivity. Dickey said: “Our approach keeps the materials separate, so you have maximum conductivity without impairing elasticity.” For example, users of headphones may never again

have to run the risk of the wires breaking, thanks to these stretchy cables.

While making the stretchy wires is relatively easy, Dickey says, solving the problem of the liquid metal leaking out of the polymer if the wires are damaged

will have to be address before they find their way into popular electronics like headphones or phone chargers or used to make electronic textiles.

The panel was chaired by PJ George. The minutes of the panel discussion are as follows:• Pre-learning helps students to

grasp the concepts quickly.• PG & UG courses need to

emphasize on publishing papers for which some amount of credits to be given as incentive.

• Innovative thinking to be encouraged in students.

• Assignments to be practical oriented rather than “written assignments” which is quite common.

• If online sessions of teaching is introduced students can get a break from the usual “classroom teaching”.

• The fact that imagination is more important than knowledge needs to be stressed upon so that scope of production of new innovative products expands.

• Vacation for students is an essential and integral part of student life and such breaks are quite necessary to improve their performance.

• In the process of gaining knowledge, emphasis of spiritual, social and moral values must not be lost, hence care to be taken to organize such programs along with the curriculum.

• Residential form of Professional Study and its importance.

• Examination questions must test the knowledge of that student at application level rather than theoretical level.

• Autonomous status of a college can help in improving its quality of study.CEC2, achieved its goal in

introducing and spreading the word and possibilities if IEEE and its benefits to young and future academicians of the State.
