Ways to Participate in IEEE Standards Development
Start At the IEEE Standards Association home page http://standards.ieee.org/
Find
Search for PROJECTS by topic http://standards.ieee.org/develop/project/ Search for WORKING GROUPS by topic: http://standards.ieee.org/develop/wg/ Search by SPONSOR (usually IEEE Societies): http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/detailed_index.html
Contact Reach out to the working group contact to join the working group
26
IEEE Standards Development: Project Approval Process
Any individual or company with a technical idea may start a project
Determine need for project
Referred to as a Sponsor
Sponsor does not have a financial role
Sponsor provides guidance and support
Find a technical
group within IEEE to
sponsor the project
Develop scope and purpose of the project
Submit a Project Authorization Request (PAR)
form for approval by New Standards
Committee (NesCom)
27
IEEE Standards Development: Develop Draft Standard
Standard is written by working group
Working group writes initial draft or develops draft from existing documents and specifications
Working group follows the policies and procedures of the Technical Committee
Draft document is revised and reviewed
28
IEEE Standards Development: Ballot = Vote
Interested parties are
invited to ballot on draft
standards
IEEE-SA Members receive
document, review it, and
vote on it
29
IEEE Standards Development: Approval Process Publication
Submit the final draft
standard to Review
Committee (RevCom)
RevCom recommends approval to
IEEE-SA Standards
Board
IEEE-SA Standards
Board approves the draft standard
Publish standard
