What is an internet search engine?
◦ An internet search engine is a special site on the web that is designed to help people find information stored on other websites (Franklin,2012).

◦ Searches the internet or pieces of the internet based off of important words.
◦ Keeps an index of words and where they find them.
◦ Allows users to look for words or combinations of words found in the index (Franklin, 2012).

Helpful tips when searching the internet
Use specific words instead of generic categories (Microsoft, 2012).Example: Instead of just printables type
a specific software type: Free Educational Printables.
Use quotation marks to search specific phrases (Microsoft, 2012). Example:
“Free Educational Printables”

Use the minus (-) sign before keywords to exclude pages with that term (Microsoft, 2012).
Example: -Software, not – Software
Eliminate common words such as “a,” “my,” or “the,” unless searching for a specific title (Microsoft, 2012).

Use synonyms or alternative search terms (Microsoft, 2012).
Search a specific website or domain (Microsoft, 2012).
Use a specialty search engine or provider, such as an image search, to look for pictures (Microsoft, 2012).

Many websites provide teachers with free printable materials that can assist with lesson plan creation and add meaning to learning for students.
Some examples of printable materials would be for math a practice sheet with problems.
In a geography class a world map where students have to label the continents of the world.
In a history class a timeline or list for a specific event or series of events that has occurred through out history.
Types of Free Printables and their uses
A good website that provides handouts for math practice is the TeAchnology website.
This website provides many great free math printouts with answer sheets for all grade levels including 9-12 graders.
This website also provides other free printables for all grade levels and subjects.

Free Printables for Math
Many sites also provide free printable maps for teachers to use within their classrooms. One example is the Maps to Print website which allows teachers to print for free maps of the World, different continents, or the U.S. and it’s states even down to the breakdown of the counties within a state.

Free Printables for Geography
Many printable worksheets of lessons or timelines in history, in this case World History, are very useful for 9-12 grade learning. This website has links to different events in history with lesson plans, power points, and printouts for each.

The handouts provided consist of a copy of the power point presentation for the Searching for Free Printables for Educational Learning Training.
A list of resources I used to create my training session on free printables as well as a few other informational sites with a short overview of what is provided and can be found on each website.

Make sure you use a reliable and well known search engine such as Google or Yahoo when performing an internet search, in this case for free educational printables, this can insure a wide selection of search results for your topic.
Understanding how search engines work and how they bring back information can help with the selection of words used to search for your topic of interest.
Summary
Using helpful tips such as using specific words instead of generic categories along with quotation marks or minus signs can insure that only specific phrases or topics are brought back when performing your internet search.
Many websites provide free printables and other materials so teachers can add extra practice or value to their already developed lesson plans.

When performing a search for “free printables for education” the Technology,Inc site is very broad and is a good example of a useful site to obtain free printables for all subjects. This as well as the other sites provided in this training along with the reference handout are good resources for just some of the subject areas teachers in 9-12 grades can use to effectively teach within their specific subject area.

In conclusion, teachers can really add value and meaning to their lesson plans while still addressing the main topics of their lesson. When teachers practice the right searching techniques, when searching for free educational printables on the internet, they can promote productive educational learning as well as practice the most effective internet searching techniques when searching for a topic of interest.
