Welcome to a double first forInternational Dealer News - the firstof our sequence of editions reviewingthis year's EICMA 'Milan' Show, and
our first ever entirely digital-only special edition.Itself conceived for two very goodreasons (extra space for some of thelarge volume of content wegenerate during our visit to theshow, and as a "bonus extra"opportunity for our advertisers), thisspecial edition isn't instead of ourusual post-show exhibitor news andbooth photo feature - but anaddition.Around a week after this digital-onlyedition is sent out, we will also besending the link to our regularDecember/ January print/digitalmagazine, and with it a further 16pages of further industry and vendornews and parts, accessory andapparel manufacturer and brandowner reports.The most striking thing about thisyear's EICMA was the considerablyhigher number of new products thatwere being introduced. Not justmore than last year, but probably more than the last threeor four "Milan" shows added together.We are accustomed to the number of new productintroductions remaining high on the context of the verydifferent environment and profile of INTERMOT at Cologne,Germany, every other year, but at EICMA it has proven tobe variable, with the event showing definite signs of theeconomic issues the motorcycle industry has been facing.However, with at least somewhat of a recovery underwayin most of Europe's main markets (despite ongoing politicaland macro-economic concerns), "Milan" is growing again.At the time of writing there had not yet been any kind ofofficial attendance statement from ANCMA (the Italianmotorcycle industry trade association that operates EICMA
(and personally I wasn't there to witness the weekendcrowds), but despite the fact that the recovery in newmotorcycle registrations is still at its early stages in Italy,there was no disguising the more positive attitude amongthe show's exhibitor community and the improved energy
most were displaying.It has always been the case that whena downturn hits, the two firstexpenditures to suffer are marketingand research and development -ironically the two most important tomaintain during poor economicconditions.We here at International DealerNews can report that market budgetsare on the rise again in most sectorsof the industry, and the new productlaunches at EICMA also show thatthe pent up demand andopportunities for new products arefinally being exploited.The outcome of all recessions hasalways shown that the primary losersare those who reduce marketing andR&D, and that the primary winnersare those who maintained theirspend and activity.So, while we are never able to visit
and report on all exhibitors at multi-hall events such asEICMA and INTERMOT, in this and the subsequent editionsof IDN and MotoWEEK we will report on as many of those"winners" as we can.

This year's EICMA saw many new products makingtheir exclusive world premieres at the show, but theone that really caught our attention here atInternational Dealer News and MotoWEEK is whatis believed to be the first ever commercially availableoff-the-shelf automatic eCall system for motorcycles.Founded in Germany in 1991 as a service providerfor electronics manufacturing and development,Digades GmbH evolved into a system supplier in theautomotive, building and infrastructure industries.Their specialist knowledge in radio transmissionsystems, miniaturisation and energy efficientelectronics design took them into developing eCalltechnology for the automotive sector - customersinclude the likes of Audi, Bentley, BMW, Daimler andVW to name a few - and now the company haslaunched "dguard", an automatic eCall systemdesigned specifically for motorcycles.The system processes data from several sensors thatmonitor values like inclination, acceleration andmovement, and when all the system sensors reportthe parameters that mean an accident has takenplace, it automatically connects the rider to thecountry’s emergency call centre.The system only needs two primary components tobe operational - the communication unit itself andthe dguard eCall sensor. A third component, the"dguard" eCall button, fits on the handlebar andgives the rider control of the system - includingoverride function and non-detected incident reportoption; a "dguard" app is available to monitor thestatus and correct installation of the system.If the rider is incapacitated and unable tocommunicate directly with the emergency responseteam at the call centre themselves, then the callcentre will automatically send an ambulance to theGPS coordinates of the accident, with nominatedfamily/friends also automatically notified of theincident.Shown at EICMA installed on a BMW R 1200 RT,where the system components fit easily in the spaceunder the seat, and on a KTM 300 EXC they had beenusing as a test platform, the unit sells as a self-contained complete kit - once installed all that isrequired is for the rider to then register the device forthe service provided by Digades. The service fee forthe first 2 years is included in the recommended retailprice.By 2018 all new production cars sold in the EU willhave to have such systems fitted as standard, withthe required infrastructure available in Europe in2017. However, so far, not much attention has beenpaid to the needs of motorcyclists.
This new "dguard" system also does double-duty asa motorcycle tracker, informing the rider if the bike isbeing moved without his or her consent.However, in recognition of them being the first tohave such a system available for riders now, in anextension of the HOT100 new product awards that
it has been making to selected aftermarket parts,accessory and apparel product manufacturers anddesigners for some three years already, InternationalDealer News is awarding the "dguard" its firstannual International Motorcycle Industry NewProduct of the Year Award.

TheTouring line includes the new Eve boot, intendedfor women who want a comfortable boot for on andoff the motorcycle. Slovenian exhaust manufacturer Akrapovic has added an EC-ECE type-approved titanium versionmuffler to its Slip-On line. Seen here configured for the Ducati Multistrada, it is a development of thecarbon fibre construction that has already been seen for several bikes since its INTERMOT 2014 launch,with a hand-crafted carbon fibre heatshield, a larger-diameter inlet pipe and an upgrade of thehexagonal carbon fibre end cap design. Titanium "considerably" reduces the weight over the stocksystem, and when used in combination with the optional titanium header, is said to "provide animpressive performance increase throughout the entire rev range, giving improved throttle responseand offering even greater control over the power distribution".
