COMMENT: EU stats send positive message.....................................................................Page 4

The latest data releasedby ACEM, the Brusselsbased motorcycleindustry trade

association, show motorcycleregistrations up by +8.3 percentin the first six months of 2015 in26 of the 28 member states ofthe European Union.

At 505,229 units (compared to466,496 units in the first six monthsof 2014), this is the best first half-yearmarket performance in Europe formany years, and after a couple ofyears in which the sales decline of therecession slowed and in whichregistrations stabilized and thenposted modest growth in 2014, this isthe first and most important piece ofmajor good news for the motorcycleindustry in Europe since 2007.

In total PTW (Powered TwoWheeler) registration terms the firstsix months of the year saw 3.4 percentgrowth at 666,119 units from644,527 in the first six months of lastyear. On small volumes, Europe'smoped market is still in declinethough, down by -9.6 percent at160,890 units (from 178,031 in2014).

France remains Europe's largestmarket in total PTW terms, althoughat 127,425 units for the first sixmonths (compared to 131,210 unitsfor the same period last year) theFrench market remains the only one ofEurope's "majors" where sales arestill in decline, at -2.9 percent; thatsaid, in motorcycle terms, French

market decline has slowed and at only-0.3 percent for the first six months(87,672 units, down from 87,424 in2014) suggesting that this year willsee the French market stabilize, following the same pattern that hasinformed recovery elsewhere inEurope.

In total PTW terms the Germanmarket is the second largest behindFrance at 114,770 units (+1.8 percentfor the first six months) with Italy third

largest at 113,246 units (+2.3percent).

However, in motorcycle registrationterms, the Italian market is Europe'slargest at 100,672 units (up by a veryhealthy +5.1 percent for the halfyear), with the German market secondat 96,709 units (+5 percent) andFrance third.

Spain is Europe's fourth largest innew motorcycle registration terms forthe first half of 2015, according toACEM's pan-European data, at64,616 units (+20.9 percent for theyear to date), with the UnitedKingdom fifth (56,950 units, +15.3percent); Greece sixth, Austriaseventh, Poland eighth, Belgium 9thand Portugal 10th. If it was an EUmember, Switzerland would actuallybe just behind the UK market (seereport elsewhere in this edition ofInternational Dealer News, as it is infact Europe's sixth largest motorcyclemarket overall.

France is Europe's largest mopedmarket; followed by Germany, thenItaly. At the time of going to pressACEM's data had yet to include thenew registration data from Malta andSlovakia.

IT is rare for being wrong to be a good thing, and rarer still foranything in life to be a surprise anymore, especially not in a "good way".However, the latest new motorcycle registration data released by ACEM, the

Brussels based motorcycle industry trade association, appears to show therecovery in new registrations in EU members to be "robust".Of course the headline news is an average of national data that conceals big

variations in individual European markets; even among the "big five" there is abig difference between what is happening in the UK and Spain (in particular) andGermany, where the 12 month cycle has had downs as well as ups, Italy wherestability is still fragile, and France, especially, with a market only just now startingto edge towards the bottom of itsown very broad PTW sales cycle U-curve.Indeed, even within national

markets, there are wide variationsbetween sectors of the market andbetween regions. In general though the trend data

is positive in two key respects.First of all in terms of the headline numbers. Overall, and as reported on the

front page of this edition of International Dealer News, market growth does nowappear to be solid, and it shows pretty decent numbers; mid single digit growthis a "good thing" in that it generally isn't to be confused with the stability that ischaracterised by low single digit growth, and is sustainable in a way that doubledigit growth generally isn't.Second, while there is still softness in the lower displacement sectors of the

market, sectors that, arguably, can point to demographic issues in terms of youthentry, the strongest growth is taking place in parts of the market that are financiallymore important to Europe's hard-pressed dealers, and more important to Europe'saftermarket parts, accessory, apparel and service-item vendors - the largerdisplacement markets and, especially, among the middleweights and everincreasingly important adventure tourer sector.

Middleweights have been somewhat of a "Cinderella" sector for years, and growth there is to be welcomed as they represent units that aremore likely to be daily riders, and more likely to be a parts and accessory

spend opportunity for dealers. The growth in "naked" style middleweights (kudos to Yamaha) and adventure

tourers means the mid single digit growth we are seeing in Europe will punchabove its weight in aftermarket, apparel and accessory terms; it will also result inincreases in the number of miles being ridden (as is already being seen in somemarkets despite the theoretically much lower bike parc), which in turn goes to unitgrowth, and participant stability is good news for workshop bookings and serviceitem consumption.Regular readers will know that, personally, I have remained rather sceptical,

cynical even, about the prospects for any real evidence of real growth emergingfor another couple of years at least. My thesis has been that there are still too

many macro economic uncertainties and too little consumer confidence as a resultfor any anticipation of what ACEM’s half-year data represents to be realistic. However, ACEM's methodology is sound and the diligence with which their

figures are compiled (some weeks after the first releases of major-market data bythe national trade associations) makes their analysis "considered" and definitelyworth taking notice of.

I t was ACEM for example who, as long ago as the autumn of 2012, startedpointing to signs of an impending slow-down in market decline and a cyclethat would see stability established in 2013 and 2014 - a cycle that would be

followed by market conditions that could well permit modest growth to evolveinto something more meaningful.

There is no doubt an element ofdeferred spending going on, with a lot ofbike park renewal taking place ratherthan overall bike park growth as such. Inrecent years older machines have beenworked longer and harder and as amodicum of consumer confidencereturns they, no doubt, are finally beingretired in increasing numbers.

Indeed the questions that still haunt the industry in terms of licensing andtraining, youth entry into PTW transportation and leisure options, and thecomparative weakness of lower displacement sales, then the growth cannot yetbe explained by young riders coming into the industry in increased numbers.Either way ACEM's late 2012 prognosis has proven to be spot-on and, for once,

the scepticism of those, like me, who have still been unsure about market prospectsfor the past 12 months, has been misplaced. In my case it still hasn't gone away entirely. While some markets (the UK for

example) have started to see small increases in the number of people completingtheir rider education processes, I think it still behoves us to temper optimism withrealism. It may well be that we are all in for a pleasant surprise and if we are, well,it is the kind of surprise that I'm sure we'd all embrace willingly. That said though, as this edition of IDN went to press there are still macro

economic issues threatening the prospects for sustained job and wealth creationin Europe's single currency zone; not least the financial problems that now appearlikely to envelop China. For as long as the Euro languishes and the spectre ofdeflation hangs over us then the very real risk is that the next decade will be oneof Japanese style stagnation rather than real growth - and under those conditionsit is likely that consumer demand will remain unstable.

IT would appear that attemptsto secure a future for Spanishtrials bike manufacturer GasGas/Ossa under the presentmanagement have failed.According to a recent pressrelease from the company it isstill hoped that a new ownermay buy the assets as a goingconcern and recommenceproduction."Update regarding the currentsituation with the company..."In recent months the companyhas gone through several legalproceedings in order torenegotiate the debt and tocontinue operations.Unfortunately, despite thevaliant efforts made to achievethis goal, it has been impossibleto reach and finally they havedeclared to proceed with theliquidation of Gas Gas Motos SA.

"In this process, the currentmanagement team, the receiversand the council representativesof all employees are workingfull-throttle to collect all of thenecessary information to beginthe process of selling the factoryand to close the subsequent saleprocess with potential buyers inthe fastest way possible."The target set by the sale ofthe production unit is to be ableto reactivate the Gas Gas Motosfactory in a way that allows us

to produce our motorcycles, both enduro and trial, andensure a solid and sustainablelong term viability of thecompany".In 2013 Gas Gas received a 4million euro investment by aninternational consortium, and in2014 the Catalan governmentagreed to provide Gas Gas witha further 2 million euro to funda recovery plan for the company,a plan that included acquisitionof new technology to improve

their two and four stroke engineproduction. Last year, it was announced thatGas Gas would merge with Ossaand re-launch that brand, havingpreviously agreed to shareproduction facilities andpersonnel. Ossa was re-launchedin 2009, three decades after itsclosure, and were believed to beproducing around 800 trialsmotorbikes. At this time it isunclear whether the Ossa brandand prospects for its productionis wrapped-up in this latestdevelopment, but it is likely thatit is.Gas Gas itself was founded in1985, so was hoping tocelebrate its 30th anniversarythis year. It is estimated that thecompany was producing some9,000 bikes per year as recentlyas 2012/13, exporting to over 50countries and generating some500 direct and indirect jobs inCatalonia, north of Barcelona.

FOLLOWING its debut at EICMAin November last year, one ofthe legendary names of post-war off-road motorcycle sportis now firmly on the come-backtrail.Under the guidance ofrenowned ex Cagiva, Apriliaand Husqvarna motorcycleengineer Ampelio Macchi asCEO, and with the financialbacking and volumeproduction expertise of China'sShineray Group, July saw thefirst new Italian SWM modelroll off a production line in the23,000 sqm formerBMW/Husqvarna productionfacility on a 45,000 sqm sitenear Varese, north of Milan.Originally founded in Milan in1971 by Piero Sironi andFausto Vergani, SWM (SpeedyWorking Motors) was a leadingTrials, Enduro, Motocross andoff-road brand in the 1970sand 1980s, achievingconsiderable race success andbuilding a devoted followingin Italy and internationally.

They started with smallcapacity Sachs engined endurobikes and began making Rotaxengined trials bikes in 1977.This was the era of otherhistorically strong brands suchas Ossa, Bultaco, Montesa andothers, many of which hittrouble one way or another. In the case of SWM the endcame in 1984; fast forwardthirty years to the 'MilanShow' last year and a newcompany bearing the historicname introduced six street andoff-road bikes with enginesizes between 300 and 650cc.Following a formal unveiling atthe "Valli Bergamesche" event, the Italian round of the WEC(World Enduro Championship)at Rovetta (Bergamo, Italy) inJune, the first to roll off theproduction line in July was theRS 650 R, a DOHC 4-valveliquid-cooled fuel injected 600cc single cylinder 4-strokeenduro in a steel single beamdouble cradle frame withupside-down front forks, Sachs

rear shock absorber, fixeddisc/floating caliper brakes,21" front and 18" rear wheels, electric start and 6-speed wet-sump gearbox.Based on an evolution of theHusqvarna TE 610 enduro, withthe same brakes andsuspension set-ups, thecompression of the Husqvarnaengine has been increased andthe single cylinder bored outto 600cc. SWM will use theHusqvarna engine for all theoff-roaders it makes. The production plan

anticipates some 2,500 to3,000 units for 2015 initially, with an SM 650 R due later inthe summer, an RS 300 R, RS500 R and SM 500 R at the endof September, with the returnof the SWM "Classics" - theSilver Vase and Gran Milano440s - by the end of October. The present workforce ofaround 60 is expected to growto some 110 people, and 125ccmodels are planned in the nearfuture.

POSITIVE news from Sweden wherethe market growth seen in 2014 hascontinued for the fist six months of2014.According to the latest data

were +13 percent at 1,119 units;with small cc PTWs (mopeds etc)+32.4 percent at 1,393 units.Per Johansson, the Managing

Director of NcRF puts the turnaroundin Sweden down to several factors."Low interest rates, high employmentand, not least, pent-up need totrade-up. Many have waited a year totrade-up but now decided to acquirea better and more modernmotorcycle".He especially cites the safety

standards of new vehicles as being abig motivator with consumers. "Thetechnological developments in thepast five years mean a lot for safety -there have been big advances inbrakes and lights for example, toname just two important drivers ofimproved safety and improved publicperception of two-wheel safety".Motorcycle registrations in Sweden

'bottomed-out' in 2012 at some7,000 units; they grew in 2013(approx 7,300 units) and 2014 sawthe market recover to around 8,100new motorcycle registrations. The total number of motorcycles

registered in Sweden (the"motorcycle parc") continued togrow throughout the downturn andthat maybe the delayed-spend factorthat Johansson is referencing - fromaround 285,000 units in 2007 it hadreached over 315,000 by the end oflast year. The top selling models in Sweden

last year were the BMW R 1200 GS& R 1200 GS Adventure in top place,the Yamaha MT-09 second, theKawasaki Z800 & Z800e third,Kawasaki ER6n & ER6F fourth withYamaha's MT-07 fifth.Street bikes took 29 percent of the

market in Sweden last year;Adventure bikes second at 18percent (the KTM 1190 Adventureand 1190 Adventure R and 690 SMCand 690 Enduro were the sixth andseventh best sellers in Sweden in2014); custom style motorcycles(principally Harley-Davidsons) took12 percent of the market, equal withscooters, with off-roaders accountingfor 11 percent and tourers 8 percent.

Some 34 percent of the bikes soldin Sweden in 2014 were over 1,000cc; with 19 percent 751-1,000cc and15 percent between 601 and 750cc.Sweden's principal motorcycle

manufactured motorcycle exports toEurope are broadly level, at +1.21percent, 85,331 units for the first halfof the year, which compares to nearly259,000 units for the first half of2007.In total PTW terms June exports to

Europe were -12.73 percent at10,650 units and are broadly levelfor the year-to-date at +0.95percent, 91,118 units. The picture is even worse in the

United States, where imports of250cc+ domestic Japanesemanufactured motorcycles were -

37.19 percent at a mere 3,562 units(which is barely enough for one perdealer!) with the year-to-date there -31.25 percent at 19,097 units. To putthat in context, June 2007 was worth17,787 units, and the first six monthsof 2007 worth 191,000 units.

A lot more Japanese brandmotorcycles and small cc machinesare now coming into Europe and theUSA from subsidiary and affiliatefactories elsewhere in the world, butthe data still makes alarming readingas the historically market-defining

"Big Four" look increasingly like a"Big Two plus a few other models",as European and Americanmanufacturers take ever increasingshares of a much smaller market inEurope and North America.

growth and we will approach150,000 units this year. This isstill far out from goal ofmarket sustainability though, which we see as being around250,000 units a year - which isnot an over-ambitious target, given that the market in Spainsaw more than 395,000 unitsregistered in 2007".Market leader so far this yearfor new motorcycleregistrations is Honda with a16.2 percent share at 13,243units (up 11 percent over 2014).Kymco is second with 14.9percent, with Yamaha third(14.4 percent); Piaggio fourth(9.1 percent); Suzuki fifth (6.6percent); followed by Sym,BMW, Kawasaki, Keeway andPeugeot.

INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015 11

THOUGH still relatively small in newmotorcycle registration terms, themotorcycle market in Poland is aninteresting one - especially in terms ofparts and accessories. Chosen byPolaris for their first Europeanmanufacturing facility, Poland hasbeen a leading choice for motorcycleparts and accessory manufacturing fora long time.

Mostly out-source manufacturingfor Western European brands, the past10 years has seen a growth in thenumber of Polish parts makers nowselling to importers and distributors inthe rest of Europe, and a growth in thenumber of domestic Polish importersand distributors representing leadingEuropean brands. All sectors ofpowersports activity have seenevolution there - the country even hasa small but thriving custom bike scenewith some Polish builders winningprizes at custom bike shows inWestern Europe in recent years.

Pre-owned motorcycles imported toPoland (from Germany in particular)are a huge part of the market (which isvery good news for the parts andaccessory sector), and according to thelatest data released by the motorcycleindustry trade association in Poland(PZPM), new and first time registeredused motorcycles grew strongly in thefirst six months of 2015.

Nearly 50,000 new and usedmotorcycles were registered in Polandin the period January to June, which isup by over 63 percent over the firsthalf of 2014, and by far the highestnumber since before 2010 - the cut-offpoint for PZPM data.

Of those 13,825 were new units (asopposed to first time registered usedmachines), which is a massive 184percent increase on the number ofnew motorcycles registered in Polandin the first six months of 2014 - nearly28 percent of all motorcycleregistrations.

In addition, some 15,913 newmopeds are reported as registered inPoland during the first half of the year, although that is down by over 31percent from 2014; with an additional22,801 used mopeds registered therefor the first time (-26.41 percent).

In total Poland was worth over

72,000 new and used PTWs in the firsthalf of 2015 (over 68 percent of themwere new or first time registered usedmotorcycles), a figure that is up bynearly 18 percent over the first half of2014 and the highest seen since2012. www.pzpm.org.pl

Electric and alternate-poweredmotorcycles in the EU

An alternative offer with considerableadvantagesIN recent years, the motorcycle industry has started developing new electricallyand hydrogen-powered models, as well as hybrid vehicles. They emit little or nocarbon monoxide and dioxide, hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides or particulatematter; operate in a smoother manner and consequently have very low soundemissions. From the user’s point of view, these electric vehicles can be easily charged at

home or work, without special charging infrastructure. Moreover, mopeds, motorcycles and quadricycles running on these ‘alternative

fuels’ have substantially lower prices than electric cars, which makes thempotentially affordable to a wider range of people, and as a result of their reducedweight and mass, they are a perfect candidate for electrification. Also, they can take full advantage of the key features of mobility in urban

environments: trips in high-traffic density zones, short travelling distances, andlimited availability of parking spaces.

… but still very much a niche marketIn spite of these comparative advantages, market update remains limited. According to ACEM’s estimations, only between 1% and 2% of all

L-category vehicles (i.e. powered-two and three- wheelers andquadricycles) registered in Europe in 2014 were electricmodels. It is true that some countries are witnessing anincrease in the number of electric vehicles. In theNetherlands, for example, registrations went up from4,090 units in 2010 to 5,123 units in 2014. In Spain, registered vehicles increased from 165 in 2010 to1,053 in 2014. Notwithstanding this, the absolute figures remain at

niche levels for now. The fact that some nationaladministrations do not yet distinguish between internalcombustion engine and electric engine vehicles in their officialstatistics is symptomatic of the situation in this segment of themarket.

The key barrier to market uptake: charginginfrastructure According to the European Commission, limited charging infrastructure is a

major limiting factor in the large scale adoption of electric vehicles, in particularfor cars. This is one of the reasons why in 2013, the Commission proposed theClean Power for Transport package with very ambitious objectives for chargingpoints all over the EU to be achieved by 2020. However, probably as a result of the delicate situation of public finances in

many European countries, the European Transport Ministers rejected the principleof binding targets and proposed a more flexible framework without quantitativeobjectives. In any case, for the European Commission this issue is still on the table,as its recent Communication on an Energy Union suggests.

The importance of common standards Another important area of work is harmonisation. Experts from the public and

private sectors working together at CEN-CENELEC, the European bodyresponsible for technical standardisation, have defined a standard to harmoniseplug-ins for electric L-category vehicles. Although not legally binding yet, this newstandard for type 3A plugs sent a clear signal to economic operators. The European Commission should certainly consider making this standard

mandatory through its inclusion in the Directive on the Deployment of AlternativeFuels Infrastructure. This would facilitate the free movement of products withinthe EU internal market and would increase their acceptance among consumers, providing further possibilities for charging in public spaces.

Creating the adequate fiscal environmentIt is also important to remember that a sensitive combination of fiscal and tax

incentives would also be required in order to create an adequate environment

for the uptake of vehicles running on alternative fuels. Although some European governments have launched rounds of subsidies to

incentivise sales of low or zero-emissions vehicles, powered-two and threewheelers are not always eligible. This is why in several European countries there is still an unequal playing field

between electric mopeds, motorcycles and quadricycles, and other electric meansof transport such as cars or buses.Notwithstanding this, in some countries the situation is starting to change. In

the UK, for example, our colleagues from the MCIA have successfully made thecase for electric motorcycles and scooters to qualify for subsidies under a newscheme announced by the Office for Low Emission Vehicles (OLEV).

Unlocking the potential of innovation Co-operative, publicly funded research can be a valuable complement to in-

house industry research in the area of e-mobility. In this respect, the EuropeanGreen Vehicles Initiative (EGVI), a public private partnership funded by both theEuropean Commission and industry, is being instrumental in promoting “smart, green and integrated transport” in Europe. A concrete example of this: earlier this year, the European Commission decided

to allocate €5-8m to the RESOLVE project, an initiative, led by ACEMmanufacturers KTM and Piaggio, which will develop new

prototypes of vehicles with innovative powertrains. Projects like RESOLVE illustrate the importance ofcreating synergies between partners and are anexcellent example of co-operation between industryand policy makers. Additional research would beneeded in different areas, which would greatly benefitfrom further European support. And this is one of thekey topics we will discuss during our next 2015 annualconference in Brussels.

Summing up… The models that the motorcycle industry has launched onto the

European market, as well as those under development, will certainlycontribute to transforming our transport systems and to improving theirenvironmental footprint. However, whether the share of electric vehicles increases or not will depend

mostly on two elements: consumers’ choices and the policies thatwill be put in place by decision makers. For the time being, and quite likely for years to come, internal

combustion engines will continue to play an important role intransportation.

powerful model portfolio and thereputation of the BMW Motorradbrand provide the basis for ourincreasing market success. The newgeneration of water-cooled Boxermodels, our custom roadster and thefamily of sporty S models are creatinga veritable surge in demand".The front-runner in the BMW

Motorrad sales ranking remains thewater-cooled R 1200 GS, with 14,099units supplied to date this year. This isfollowed in second and third place bythe two Boxer models, R 1200 GSAdventure and R 1200 RT, with 10,429and 6,471 units respectively, withmore than 40 percent of Boxer GSmotorcycles ordered of the Adventuretype. Salon de la Moto'Paris Show'THIS year sees the 'Paris Show'return to the French capital'smuch re-modelled primaryexhibition centre at Porte deVersailles from December 1st -6th 2015.The Salon de la Moto, Scooter,Quad et Equipement (to give it itsfull title) is staged every otheryear, alternating with INTERMOTand Cologne, Germany, and afterbeing cancelled during the depthsof the recession is nowcontinuing to build back itsaudience and working hard toattract young riders in particular.France in general, and Paris inparticular, have becomenotoriously difficult markets forthe motorcycle industry inregulatory terms, despiteregulators there being exposed toseveral well-researched projectsthat point to the congestion, emissions and journey timereduction advantages of PTWs for

urban mobility.Of all of Europe's "big five"motorcycle markets, the Frenchmarket continues to languishwith the best hope for 2015being that dealers there continueto see a slow-down in marketdecline followed by somestabilisation in 2016.With that being the hope, theprimary motorcyclemanufacturers, parts andaccessory importers anddistributors, and the small buthigh-quality domestic Frenchcomponent and apparelmanufacturing and brand owningcommunity, is expected to comeout in force for the show. There appears to be positivemarket sentiment and attitude -Thierry Archambault, the DeputyChairman of the CSIAM (theInternational Automobile andMotorcycle association in France),says that "the two-wheel

manufacturers, members ofCSIAM, are working relentlesslyto promote the show, so two-wheel fans can discover the manygreat new motorcycle andscooter models and parts, accessory and apparelprogrammes that will belaunched for 2016.The latest data available fromCSIAM (January - April 2015)show that the total number ofmotorcycles, scooters andQuads/ATVs sold in France stoodat 58,851 units, down by -4.0percent over the first four monthsof 2014.However, motorcycles andscooters of all displacementswere down by only 2.7 percent(48,415 units); better still sales ofmotorcycles over 500 cc wereapproximately level with the first

four months of last year, at justover 30,000 units, meaning thatthe prospects for a successfulshow and better businessenvironment for the industry inFrance in 2016 are good. The show is open to the public forsix days, with Monday November30th and Tuesday December 1st(through to 4:00 pm) reserved fortrade and press visitoradmittance.

16 INTERNATIONAL DEALER NEWS - AUGUST/SEPTEMBER 2015

Tough second quarter for Harley HARLEY-DAVIDSON is continuing toforecast increased unit shipments for2015 as a whole despite the fact thatQ2 and year-to-date unit sales, unitshipments, net income, consolidatedincome, operating income/margin andEPS are all down.

Its latest financial filings state thatthe company "continues to expect toship 276,000 to 281,000 motorcyclesto dealers and distributors worldwidein 2015, an approximate 2 to 4percent increase from 2014" and that" revenue, earnings and motorcycleshipments" for the second quarterwere "in line with [April revised]company expectations".

This optimism is despite a secondquarter decline of -1.4 percent inworldwide sales (88,931 units soldagainst 90,218 in the second quarterof 2014) and a 0.75 percent drop inthe United States (57,790 unitsagainst 58,225 in Q2 of 2014).

In international markets, dealerssold 31,141 new Harley-Davidsonmotorcycles during the secondquarter compared to 31,993motorcycles in the year-ago period, with sales up 16.6 percent in the AsiaPacific region and down -8.9 percent

in Harley's most important MiddleEast & Africa (EMEA) export market, -2.6 percent in the Latin Americaregion and -9.9 percent in Canada.

For the first six months of the yearHarley report worldwide sales downby -1.4 percent at 145,592 units from147,633 for the first six months of2014; with domestic US sales -0.7percent and -7.7 percent in theirEMEA region.

On a discretionary basis, the

company repurchased 2.8 millionshares of Harley-Davidson, Inc.common stock during the secondquarter of 2015 at a cost of $164.8million.

As reported by AMD Magazinerecently, the company is torepurchase up to an additional 15million shares of its common stockand, significantly, to do so with nodollar limit and by incurring long-termdebt in the third quarter of 2015 in

the amount of $750 million to fundthe share repurchase. This is inaddition to the 20 million sharerepurchase announced in early 2014;there are approximately 200m sharesoutstanding at this time.

AMD, a noted authority on theHarley-Davidson and custom bikemarket, believes that a stalled shareprice performance and recent softfiscals make Harley vulnerable tohostile take-over activity.

THE AMERICAN REPORT

THE combination formula of AIMExpo, with OEmotorcycle manufacturers guaranteeing astrong dealer attendance, exhibits orattendance by most of America's parts, accessory and apparel importers anddistributors, and an unprecedented line-up ofconsumer-facing initiatives to also buildenthusiast attendance, makes AIMExpo the"ideal platform for European vendors looking tobuild brand awareness, contacts and sales inthe United States" according AIMExpo founder, former Cycle World publisher and long-timeMotorcycle Industry Council Chairman LarryLittle."We know how hard it can be for European

parts, accessory and apparel designers, brandowners and manufacturers to build a businessplatform in the USA, just as it can be forAmerican companies to break into Europe."AIMExpo has been conceived to bring

European style expo values and concepts toAmerica for the first time - the kind of valuesand concepts that European businesses arefamiliar with at the leading international tradefairs there such as INTERMOT and EICMA."This makes AIMExpo the first expo-project

in the United States to have the strategic needsof European vendors built-in to it from the start. We believe that AIMExpo is quickly establishingitself as the must-attend annual one-stop-shopbusiness opportunity for European motorcycleindustry visitors and exhibitors just asINTERMOT is for Americans looking for contactsin Europe".International Dealer News will be exhibiting

there this year, along with our INTERMOTindustry colleagues, and AIMExpo also hasstrategic alliances in place with EICMA and theItalian Trade Commission.

If you would like information onexhibiting at AIMExpo contact the IDNoffice in the UK ([email protected]) and we will introduce youto the AIMExpo team by email. If youwant to register to attend AIMExpoyou can do so by following the links atwww.aimexpousa.com.

THE American International MotorcycleExpo (AIMExpo) at Orlando, Florida, continues to build momentum as it headstowards its third year (October 15-19,2015).Now the only 'mainstream' motorcycle and

wider powersports industry expo in the UnitedStates (since the closure of Advanstar's DealerExpo), the AIMExpo formula is new to the UnitedStates. It is the first motorcycle industry expo tobring a European INTERMOT style combined OEand aftermarket exhibitor culture to the US market, and the first expo to offer those exhibitors the bestof both worlds in business terms - a combinedindustry and public attendance (October 15th &16th are trade/dealer only days - the weekend isadditionally open to riders). The reaction to this unique-to-America formula

has been overwhelmingly positive, with attendancelast year building on year one and expected togrow again this year as acceptance of the conceptbecomes widespread among the OE motorcyclemanufacturing community. In a short time AIMExpohas built an impressive list of motorcyclemanufacturer exhibitors, including the likes ofYamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki, Honda, BMW, Kymco,CF Moto, Zero, CanAm/BRP and Arctic Cat - manyof whom are operating outdoor display and testride opportunities as well as indoor exhibits.Critically, as AIMExpo deepens its OE

manufacturer roots, it will deepen the importanceof the show to dealers - the OE involvement couldprove to be the magic key that unlocks nationaldealer attendance; in the past regionalism hasbeen a big criticism and perceived flaw of thetraditional trade show formulas in the UnitedStates. With more than three months to go, the total

number of exhibitors had surpassed last year'sfigure with over 500 companies booked in total. The AMA (American Motorcyclist Association) willagain be hosting their annual Hall of Fameinduction ceremony at AIMExpo, and a whole slewof attendance-driving enthusiast-facing initiativesare set to capitalise on timing that sees the eventstaged on the same weekend as the long-established and popular Biketoberfest Rally atDaytona Beach, Florida, which is just an hour's ridenorth east of Orlando. Those enthusiast-facing initiatives include an

AMD World Championship of Custom Bike Buildingaffiliate round - the all new Championship of theAmericas - which gives any US expo a big draw forbike builders, trade and consumer attendees; in thecase of being based in Florida, for the first time italso gives trade visitors from central and southAmerica a viable business nexus for the first time. The winner of the Championship of the

Americas will receive expenses paid entry to the2016 AMD World Championship at INTERMOT inOctober 2016 and the chance to compete againstmany of Europe's greatest custom bike designersand engineers.

New battery preparation made easy!

Correctly preparing and activating a new battery isessential - it guarantees that the battery will performat full power from the get go and have the bestchance of delivering the long service life themanufacturer says it should give.

However, due to time pressure and other issues itis a process that's often overlooked; simply put, acustomer buying a new battery at the parts counteris usually anxious to get his vehicle going, or thehappy rider about to pull away on the bike he's justcollected wants to get going the moment the sale isthrough. For those customers "come back tomorrowwhile I finish preparing the battery" just does notwork.

Martin Human, the brains behind the OptiMatebattery maintenance and diagnostics programme, told IDN...

"The problem with badly prepared batteries is thatthey will work to begin with, because problems don'temerge until months or even a year later. For dealerspoor battery preparation is a potentially expensivegamble - in financial and reputational terms - if it hasto be replaced within the warranty period.

"Even with battery acid at full strength when fresh, poor preparation brings the new battery only to 70-80% of deliverable power. Some cells may be at alower voltage than others, due to some plates withinthose cells not yet fully interacting with the just-received acid", Martin continued.

He explained that the final 20-30% of power isachieved with controlled charging that gentlyactivates the full surface of each lead plate and thusbrings each of the 6 cells to equal voltage. This is theproblem that the specifications of his TecMateOptiMate PRO-S (single bank) and OptiMate PRO-4(4 bank) are designed to deal with - to do thisautomatically, and quickly with only one hour ofcharging.

"It’s easy and does not take a lot of time. All thedealer or battery buyer has to do is fill the battery withacid as normal per manufacturer’s recommendations,

wait 30-45 minutes for the acid to settle, then select'NEW' on the OptiMate PRO, hook up the battery andwalk away.

"One hour later that new battery is good to go,ready to deliver full power and well prepared to lastwell past its warranty period - that can be 100%guaranteed if maintained by an OptiMate consumercharger".

OptiMate PRO also revives new batteries that havelost their charge due to being in storage for 3 monthsor longer, and can also automatically save a sulphatedbattery that has been discharged down to as little as1 Volt.

"Once again it is a simple procedure", says Martin."Simply select 2A or 4A for batteries larger than 10Amp-hours, hook the battery up and let the OptiMatePRO do the rest.

"We use what we call an 'AmpMatic' micro-processor, and this automatically adjusts the chargevoltage and current to match the connected battery’ssize and condition. It saves, charges and equalises the

cells within the battery, then tests and indicates to thedealer how well the battery recovered".

Polyester filtersITALIAN Sprint Filters have been chosen by the BMWItalia SBK team for Ayrton Badovini's S1000RRassault on the World Superbikes championship, andby the BMW supported MotoXracing Team in the FIMSuperstock 100 Championship.

Proud "holders" of no less than five world landspeed records thanks to San Diego Motorcycles'adventures with the S1000RR on the Bonneville saltflats, Sprint Filter’s race and street filters use a PO8air filter and a P16 intake-inclusive "Factory Kit" airfilter, which are said to feature polyester patented

technology and a long-life warranty.Sprint Filter use 80 micron polyester, composed

of wires with a diameter of five microns, whichallows a claimed doubling of the airflow and ahigher filtration power compared to any other sportair filter.

The use of polyester means that no filter oil isrequired, and no soap or shampoo is needed forcleaning - Sprint Filter say that a 30 second treatmentwith compressed air removes the dust and dirt andrestores the filter to maximum performance.
