Junior Section Player and Parent Information Pack
Introduction
Bideford Juniors are fully committed to safeguarding and promoting the wellbeing of all its members. The Committee believes that it is important that members, coaches, administrators and parents associated with the Junior Section should, at all times, show respect, be encouraged to be open at all times and to share any concerns or complaints that they may have about any aspect of the Junior Section / Club to our Child Welfare Officer: Paul Lamanna, 14 Fulford Close, Bideford, Devon EX39 4DX Mobile 07974829768. As a member of Bideford Juniors you are expected to abide by the
following Junior Club rules:
1. All members must play within the rules and respect officials and their decisions.
2. All members must respect opponents. 3. Members should keep to agreed timings for training and
competitions or inform their coach or team manager if they are going to be late.
4. Members must wear suitable kit and gumshields for training and match sessions, as agreed with the coach / team manager
5. Members must pay any fees for matches, membership or any other events promptly.
6. Junior Members are not allowed to smoke on club premises or whilst representing the Club at competitions.
7. Junior Members are not allowed to consume alcohol or drugs of any kind on the Club premises or whilst representing the Club.
Code of Conduct for Parents and Carers
1. Encourage your player to learn the rules and play within them
2. Discourage unfair play and arguing with officials 3. Help your player to recognise good performance and not
just the results 4. Never force your player to take part in sport if they do
not want too. 5. Set a good example by recognising fair play and applaud-
ing the good performance of every player and not just your own player
6. Never punish or belittle a player for losing or making mis-takes
7. Publicly accept officials’ judgements 8. Support you player's involvement and help them to enjoy
their sport. 9. Always use the correct and proper language at all times.
The Good Players’ Code Players should be encouraged to: 1. recognise and appreciate the efforts made by coaches,
parents, match officials and administrators in . 2. play the game and enjoy the rugby environment. 3. Understand the values of loyalty and commitment to adults
and team mates. 4. recognise that every player has a right to expect their
involvement in rugby to be safe and free from all types of abuse.
5. understand that if an individual or group of players feel they are not being treated in a manner that is acceptable, then they should tell an adult at the Club or the club's welfare officer.
6. play because they want to do so, not to please coaches or parents.
7. remember that skill development, fun and enjoyment are the most important parts of the game. Be attentive at all training and coaching sessions.
8. work equally hard for themselves and their team - both will then benefit.
9. recognise good play by all players on their team and by their opponents.
10. be a sportsman - win with dignity, lose with grace. 11. play to the IRB Laws of the Game and accept, without
question, all referees' decisions even if they appear to make a mistake.
12. control their emotions. Verbal or physical abuse of team mates, opponents, coaches, match officials or spectators is not acceptable.
13. treat all players as they would like to be treated themselves. Do not interfere with, bully or take advantage of any player.
The Good Spectators’ Code
Spectators should:
1. act as positive role models to all players.
2. be familiar with and abide by the RFU Child Protection Guidance in
relation to verbal and emotional abuse.
3. respect guidance from the club with regard to spectator behaviour
4. remember that children play sport primarily for their own enjoyment, not
for that of the spectators
5. acknowledge good individual performance from all the players,
irrespective of the team in which they are playing.
6. respect the match officials’ decisions, even if they appear to make a
mistake—remember that they are volunteers providing an opportunity for
young players to play rugby.
7. never verbally abuse players, coaches, match officials or fellow spectators:
such behaviour can create a negative environment for the players and
their behaviour will often reflect this.
8. acknowledge effort and good performance, rather than a ‘win at all costs’
attitude.
9. verbally encourage all players in a positive manner, shouting ‘for’ not ‘at’
players.
10. encourage all players irrespective of their ability. Never ridicule individual
players regardless of the team for which they play.
The Good Coaches’ Guide
Coaches of players should: 1. Recognise the importance of fun and enjoyment when
coaching players 2. Understand that most learning is achieved through ‘doing’. 3. Be a positive role model—think what this implies. 4. Keep winning and losing in perspective—encourage players
to behave with dignity in all circumstances. 5. Respect all referees and the decisions they make, even if
they appear to make a mistake, and ensure that the players recognise that they must do the same.
6. Provide positive verbal feedback in a constructive and encouraging manner to all players, both during coaching sessions and matches.
7. Provide rugby experiences which are matched to the players’ ages and abilities, as well as their physical and behavioural development.
8. Ensure all players are coached in a safe environment, with adequate first aid available.
9. Avoid the over-playing of the best players by using a squad system which gives everybody a satisfactory amount of playing time.
10. Never allow a player to train when injured. 11. Ensure good supervision of players both on and off the
field. 12. Recognise that players should never be exposed to
extremes of heat , cold or unacceptable risk of injury. 13. Develop an awareness of nutrition as part of an overall
education in lifestyle management. 14. Recognise that it is illegal for players under 18 to drink
alcohol and those under 16 to smoke. Coaches should actively discourage both.
15. Ensure that their knowledge of coaching strategies are up to date and in line with RFU philosophy.
16. Be aware of and abide by the policies and procedures outlined in the Policy and Procedure for the Welfare of Young People in Rugby Union.
17. Coach to the rules laid down in the Rugby Continuum and keep themselves up dated on rule changes.
THE GOOD MATCH OFFICIAL'S CODE Match Officials should: 1. recognise the importance of fun and enjoyment when officiating
players. 2. provide positive verbal feedback in a constructive and encouraging
manner during games. emphasise the spirit of the game.
3. appreciate the needs of the players before the needs of the sport. understand the physical and behavioural development of players.
4. be a positive role model. Set an example, and as such, comments should be positive and supportive. look to self-improvement e.g. participation in training courses.
5. recognise that the safety of players is paramount. 6. explain decisions - all players are still learning and parents will
understand the game better. always penalise foul play.
7. Play advantage whenever possible in order to let the game flow. show empathy for the age and ability of all players.
8. be consistent and objective. 9. be familiar with the Good Spectators Code and ensure that verbal
abuse from players, coaches or spectators is not tolerated and is dealt with by club officials immediately.
10. be aware of, and abide by, the RFU Child Protection Guidance policies and procedures.
11. officiate to the rules laid down in the Rugby Continuum and keep themselves updated on rule changes.
12. check that the home Club has provided a qualified first-aider, ambulance access has not been obstructed and that appropriate equipment is available along with someone trained in its use before starting play.
13. before training sessions and matches check that studs and other clothing are in accordance with the IRB Laws of the Game.
Bideford RFC – Social Media Policy
This policy is designed to provide helpful, practical advice to members in respect of using social media effec-
tively and positively. As a club we encourage the responsible use of social media.
The club realises that social media has become increasingly popular in recent years, because it allows people
to connect in the online world instantly. It can be hugely beneficial in disseminating information about the
Rugby Club and/or specific age-groups. It is also a popular forum for developing personal and business rela-
tionships.
It can take many different forms, including internet forums, internet blogs, social blogs, podcasts, pictures and
video. There are a wide range of platforms that the term ‘social media’ relates to. However, Bideford Rugby
Football Club recognises that the most popular channels currently used are – Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, In-
stagram and to a lesser extent YouTube.
Bideford Rugby Football Club recognises that we all live in a society that promotes free speech and freedom of
expression, but we would caution that anything that you write has the potential to enter the public domain.
Consequently, we would request that all social media commentary relating to Bideford Rugby Football Club is
of a positive nature - please think carefully before making comments that may lead to unintended conse-
quences.
Any grievance, criticism or resentment should be directed in person to the individual or respective managers
or coaches. Matters of a more serious or contentious nature should be discussed with the Club’s Committee.
We would request that you refrain from any negative comments about, players, parents, coaches, managers,
referees, clubs, etc.
We would request that you avoid gossip, slanderous comments, disruptive comments, threatening comments,
and anything that could be construed as abusive, harassing, obscene, libellous, or an invasion of another’s pri-
vacy (this includes text, audio, photographs and video). Whilst the club realises that a certain amount of
‘banter’ may take place on some forums, we would request that any language used is moderated, please re-
member that these forums can be viewed by a range of age groups from both genders; if you wouldn’t use
that language in your own home then it should not be appearing in the public domain.
If a negative comment is made, we would ask you not to comment on it either way, or to escalate an issue.
Serious instances of irresponsible use of social media platforms associated with Bideford Rugby Football Club
may be referred to the Club Committee, although any action taken by the committee will be judged on a case
by case basis.
Bideford Rugby Football Club requests that you use social media outlets positively, be responsible, share your
achievements, celebrate success, be gracious in defeat, be honest, and enjoy communicating and interacting.

Equity Policy Statement
The Junior Section is committed to ensuring that equity is in-
corporated across all aspect of its development. In doing so it
acknowledges and adopts the following as definition of sports
equality:
Sports equity is about fairness in sport, equality of access,
recognising inequalities and the taking steps to address
them, it is about changing the culture and structure of the
sport to ensure it becomes equally accessibly to everyone in
society.
The Junior Section respects the rights, dignity and worth of
every person and will treat everyone equally within the con-
text of the sport, regardless of age, ability, gender, race, eth-
nicity, religious belief, sexuality or social /economic status.
The Junior Section is committed to everyone having the right
to enjoy their sport in an environment free from threat of in-
timidation, harassment and abuse.
All Junior members have a responsibility to oppose discrimina-
tory behaviour and promote equality of opportunity.
The Junior Club Committee will deal with any incidence of dis-
criminatory behaviour seriously, according to the Junior Club
disciplinary procedures.
Managing Concussion Concussion can have potentially devastating consequences and needs to be managed effectively to minimise risks to players.
The key people in managing concussion are the parents. Clubs, like schools, have a 'Duty of Care' to inform parents of any head injuries whether they happen as a result of an accident, or as a result of playing any sport (including Rugby Union). At schools, this is normally done by a phone call to the parents, followed up with a note/letter sent home. This procedure will also happen at our club. If a coach has heard from anyone that a child has received a head injury/concussion at school, but the parents have not informed them, then they then have a 'duty of care' to follow this up with the parents. If they don't, then they could be held accountable. If a child has had a head injury at school, and the coach/team/club have not been made aware of this by anyone, then obviously they can not act and cannot be held responsible.
Please inform your players team/manager, if child has received any injury of any type.
Message from the Committee
Bideford Rugby Clubs Junior Section is run entirely by volunteers. There are a number of people, along
with the coaches, who give up a huge amount of their time to ensure that the club runs smoothly. Unlike
most clubs our Junior Section is financially independent, ensuring that all money raised can be spent
solely on the Junior Section and for the benefit of our junior players. The Junior Section not only spends
money on training and equipment but also subsidises trips such as Super Saturdays to Exeter Chiefs,
along with trips to Twickenham, tours and Christmas and end of season parties. Also, through the sub-
scriptions and other fund raising activities that club has supplied every child with a club hoodie or shirt
and club tie.
We have had numerous debates around membership fees but have always resisted the urge to signifi-
cantly increase them as we are an inclusive and community based club, and don’t want to stop children
and young people playing rugby because of cost. There are over 250 junior players currently signed up to
the Junior Section which means that there should be at least the same number of parents and carers. It
would nice to think that, given the number of parents and considering what the junior players get for
their membership fees, we would like to think we could get a handful of willing volunteers on a Sunday
morning to run the kitchen. However despite one parent volunteering to coordinate the kitchen this year
we have still struggled to secure enough support. Over the years the Junior Section Committee have dis-
cussed numerous options. We have discussed outsourcing the whole catering side of things and have
even considered offering payment to those who are willing to do it. However, there are significant issues
with both of these proposals. As you know both the home and away teams get fed after a match and this
is funded by the Junior Section. The only profit the kitchen really makes is from selling food and drink to
parents and other supporters. Annually, the kitchen makes a profit of around £2000 which goes straight
back into the Junior Section. If we out-sourced the catering the club would have to pay the caterer the
going rate for all the meals and this would equate to roughly £10,000 a year plus we wouldn’t make the
£2000 profit that we do now. In order to cover this deficit the subscription fees would need to increase
by around £48 per child, effectively more than doubling what it is now. We believe that this option is a
non appropriate as it will reduce accessibility of rugby to some. The other option of paying people to pre-
pare and serve food is a potential but is it morally right? Considering that so many people give up their
time to help make Bideford Rugby club such a fantastic club we don’t believe that it’s fair to pay one
group of volunteers and not others. So again we have ruled this out. Therefore the only viable option is
to rely on volunteers.
The Junior Section understands that some of you have genuine reasons why you can’t undertake kitchen duties and also understands that the reason that most of you come to the club is watch your child play rugby. However, it would be very much appreciated if you could spare even just one Sunday morning during the season as it would really help the whole club run much more smoothly. If you could check the fixtures when they are published and let Carol Sheppard-Blandy ([email protected]) know what Sunday you can do she will then populate a rota in advance rather than rushing around the week before.
