Women and EducationEducation is important for girls and for women, yet it is often

denied to them. A 1997 United Nations report notes that inlow-income countries, 60% more women than men are

illiterate. School enrollment for girls at the primary level is13% lower than for boys. In China, there are twice as many illiterate women as men. Education is an integral part of empowering women. Education enables young girls toenvision new opportunities for their futures beyond child-bearing and an early marriage. Education increases girls'

self-esteem and helps them to use and understand family planning techniques better. A study of 30 countries showedthat women with no schooling bore an average of 6.9children, while women with some schooling bore anaverage of three children.

Women and Politics Women need to be able to participate in community-decision-making processes. Often the important roles

that women play in a community are over-looked by development projects and local decision-making.Projects and policies that support women'sinvolvement in local and national decision-making arealso important. International treaties that affirm

women's rights are also important tools in helping women gain access to the opportunities that they deserve.

Women and Economic Opportunity Women comprise two-thirds of the worlds poorestcitizens. Many women cannot own any of the land that

they work upon or borrow money to start a business without getting a man to sign for the loan. With noincome of their own, women are dependent upon themen in their family to provide for them. Lackingmoney and therefore the ability to leave a household,

women feel they have little power to negotiate for theirown needs within the household.
