THE WORK TRIANGLE

Most activity in a kitchen happens between the cooker, the sink and the fridge. We call these three points, and the imaginary lines between them, the ‘work triangle’.

The basis of all kitchen design is to get the right distance between the three corners of the triangle: if they’re too far apart, you waste time and energy moving between them; if they’re too close, the kitchen feels cramped.

Having used the work triangle to decide the overall layout of your kitchen, you need to think about your main tasks and the ‘zones’ where you’ll carry them out.

This will help you decide the type of storage and appliances you need, and exactly where you should position them to ensure everything’s just where you need it.

FOOD STORAGE ZONE

First, make sure you have enough storage space – for tins and packets, and all your fresh ingredients. Then think about your shopping and cooking habits, and decide what type of units you need. Also consider a worktop in this zone to make unpacking your shopping easier.

CLEANING ZONE
