Moving West (Northwest territory) Traveling west was not easy
There was a need for good inland roads
In 1806 Congress approved a National Road leading from
Baltimore, Maryland to Illinois
River travel had advantages
Robert Fulton developed a steamboat to go upstream for
passengers to use
steamboats brought a new age in river travel

A New York man came up with the idea to link river travel
together. He wanted to build a canal
A canal is an artificial waterway
The first canal built in America was the Erie canal
It linked New York City to Lake Erie
The success of the Erie canal lead to the building of more
canals

New Land Changed
In 1790’s as America moved West, 4 states were created-
Vermont, Kentucky, Tennessee, and Ohio
Western movement slowed during the war of 1812 then
picked back up when the war was over
More new states were added along with the dramatic
population growth
Life in the West did not include the conveniences of the
Eastern town life
