Objectives

Students will be able to:o Identify the words related to the unit.o infer the answers of the comprehension questions from the

text about festivals o Solve a crossword puzzle by utilizing from the pictures.

Introduction

(5 minutes)

o First, the teacher will write "Festivals" in big font to the board and ask students “Do you know this word?” What does it mean? Can you tell me one festival we have in Turkey, we celebrate in Turkey?

o Then the teacher will write the responses to the brainstorming bubble on the board.

o Then the teacher asks some questions to students about festivals they know and write some of the responses to the board.

Ex:- Do you recall any festival names?- Which festivals we do celebrate and when was that

(mounts& numbers)?- We know Ramadan, Kurban, Cumhuriyet bayrami. Which

festival is your favorite? Activity Purpose:

o Starting the class with a word and brainstorming is a good way to grab students’ attention.

o Asking questions will make the topic more individualized which hopefully makes the topic more relatable for the students.

o Asking questions about their previous knowledge can be good for recalling the topic.

o Writing some of the answers to the board will help students who do not attend actively to follow the class too.

Anticipated Problems & Back-up Plans The students can feel insecure about talking in front of the

class, then the teacher can try to reassure the students that it is okay to make mistakes and they are here to make mistakes and learn.

The students won’t be able to recall any festivals. Then the

teacher can revise some festivals that they have covered f and wait is the students can remember and add some afterward.

Warm-Up

(15 minutes)

o The teacher will open a presentation for students that include some vocabulary from the unit.

- Clean the house- Read poems- Sing songs- Walk in the parade- Seeing relatives- Wear costumes- Make traditional food- Decorate places- Dance o The teacher is showing students the pictures and their

names. While doing that the teacher will ask students if we do those activities and if we do, when (practicing their previous knowledge)?

o Also, the teacher will make sure the students’ pronunciations are correct by making students repeat after her.

Activity Purpose: The purpose of the PowerPoint presentation is to make the

vocabulary visualized and fun. Also, its purpose is to make sure the students recall some

festival names that they have learned. The last purpose is to make sure the pronunciations of the

students are correct.

Anticipated Problems & Back-up Plans There may be a problem with the computer, projector or,

the HDMI cable. If that happens the teacher will act out the activities and want students to guess it. The teacher will write the names of the words on the board.

Part 1: (10 Minutes)o The teacher will provide a sheet which has three kid talking

about their festivals. The kids are from Brazil, the USA, and Türkiye (Turkey).

(20 Minutes)

o The students will read the texts and put a tick if the kid is doing the activities on their festivals.

o Once the activity is done, the teacher will check the answers.

Part 2: (10 minutes)o The students will work in pairs and solve a crossword

puzzle. o The students will look at the pictures and remember which

activity it was and write it accordingly.

Activity Purpose:Part 1:

I wanted to pick two different, possibly unknown countries and its traditions and one familiar tradition.

I believe different countries; cultures should be integrated to the lesson for introducing the students with new information.

Part 2: I wanted to make this a pair work activity because I believe

crosswords are fun to complete with a peer. I intentionally used the same pictures from the presentation

on warm up (figure 1) because if the pictures are not clear enough on the paper, the teacher can open the presentation and show the picture to the students.

Follow-up Activity

o The teacher will write a link to the board (Kahoot.it) and give students a code to join the game.

o The game will be about the vocabularies that they have learned.

Activity Purpose: Ending the lesson with a game is the best way to cool

down. It is both enjoyable for the student and it serves as wrap up for the class.

If there is a problem with the projector, computer, or HDMI cable, the teacher can open the Kahoot game and ask students the questions orally or write some of the questions to the board.

If there is no problem with the projector, computer, HDMI cable and there is an internet connection problem, then the teacher can use her own internet from her phone by connecting her computer to her phones’ internet.

If all of the students don’t have a smartphone, the teacher can chance the activity to a pair work or even a group work.

students to decorate the window for May 19th

o The students can use any colorful products as they like.o Next class, the paintings will be hang to the bulletin boards

in the corridors.
