Elaine Scharf Vice-President - Area

Elaine Scharf was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois and transplanted to Los Angeles, California, at the age of 15. She met Robert (Bob) at at L.A. State College Hillel, graduating with a BA in Psychology and promptly got married. Bob’s internship took them to Los Angeles;; his residency back to San Francisco;; and Viet Nam draft to Augusta, GA. Anyone who wants to hear the “painful” story

Francisco Bay area and move to the “other-worldly” place of Augusta, Georgia, in 1974, will have to ask her later. In 1976, when they moved to Dallas, Elaine was able to put down roots where she and her family have lived since.

“I see myself as the last of a dying breed,” said Elaine. While, essentially, a stay at home mother, she often found herself exhausted from doing volunteer work everyday. Elaine has served as president of Wilshire B’nai Brith Girls Chapter;; L.A. State College Hillel;; B’nai Brith Women, in Sunnyvale, CA;; National Council of Jewish Women, Rich-ardson/Plano Section;; and Congregation Beth Torah Sister-hood. She has been a Brownie and Girl Scout Troop leader and a committed volunteer for her children’s public schools.

She has been an outspoken critic of religious right pressure in the public schools. In 1979, Elaine was appointed by the school board to sit on a committee to establish policy on religion within the Richardson School District.

The Plano Public Library System has been the big recipient of Elaine’s volunteerism, too. Chosen as a Trustee for the Li-brary System in 1984, Elaine served an additional 11 years as the lay representative to the Texas State Library System. When the System created an adult literacy program, Elaine became the Literacy Coordinator, establishing a training for one-on-one adult tutoring.

While an active member of Congregation Beth Torah for 35 years, Elaine only recently became involved with Women’s League, holding positions of Books and Magazine Chair and Treasurer within the Southwest Region. Later she served on the Transition Team for merging the Southwest and Midwest Regions. In our new IntraContinental Region,

years and is currently serving as Area Vice President.

Elaine and Bob are proud parents of three children and four grandchildren who all live everywhere but in the Dallas area. They have lots of air miles built up.

Beverly Jones Vice-President - Membership

Born and raised in Chicago, Beverly Jones has graduate degrees in History and Library Science from the University of Illinois. She and her husband Douglas came to Iowa City in 1980 when he joined the Computer Science Faculty at the University of Iowa. After their children Nathaniel and Rachel were born, Beverly took on the role of at-home mom and all-around volunteer, helping at everything from preschool to political campaigns.

Beverly is an active member of her Synagogue. She has worked in the Religious School, and has served as Youth Director. She has also served as Chair of the Tikun Olam committee. She is the Synagogue’s lay representative to the Consultation of Religious Communities, an umbrella organization of local faith communities.

Beverly has held numerous positions on the Sisterhood Board, as well as serving as Sisterhood President from 1999 to 2003. She is currently an at-large member of the Board. While Sisterhood President, Beverly became active in the Midwest Branch of Women’s League where she served as Recording Secretary and Community Service Vice-President. Sandy Polanski Vice-President - Program

I am, I’m told a very unassuming person. So with that in mind, it is very hard to write about oneself. My life can be divided in to 5 parts or sections. Each is a passion.

My husband is my strength. Without him and his easy going manner, I would not be able to do or achieve the things that I do. His support is my lifeline.

My 2 sons and daughters in law are a source of joy to me. Their accomplishments in life make me very proud. I have 2 grandsons in Vancouver and 2 grandsons in Winnipeg. They make life worth living. When I am around them, I have a perpetual smile on my face. This is what drives me. Each of my grandsons is very special in their own way.

I am very committed to my Sisterhood and Synagogue. I am the Torah Fund Chair for Sisterhood and of course do whatever else is asked of me. I would not miss a meeting nor not attend any Sisterhood program. I also am on two Synagogue committees.

I am honored to sit as a Vice President of Programming on -

ence years ago, I look forward to each and every Confer-ence. I have met many wonderful women over the years, and count myself as lucky to be able to call these specialwomen my friends.

I own a boutique gift store in Winnipeg and work many long hours in a week. I do love to cook and entertain. It is my pleasure to have the entire family at my house for all theholidays.

I would not trade my life for anything! (Boy what a lot of “I”s).

See you in San Antonio!

Ruth Harris, President Adath Jeshurun Minnetonka, MN

During December and January, the members of the Adath Women’s League collected over 150 pairs of socks which were then donated to “Beyond the Yellow Ribbon,” a program that provides assistance to veterans and their families in need of shelter, clothing and food.

We had an excellent trainer from National, Shelly Goldin, address our board on goal setting and integrating the women of a merged synagogue into our activities. There was a great deal of open discussion and we all came away feeling good about the future of the Adath Women’s League.

Our next project was sponsoring a free tax clinic through Community Action Partnership of Suburban Hennepin. Several of our members took a brief course in “greeting and screening” and assisted at the February 29 clinic.

We are looking forward to recognizing our Torah Fund donors at a luncheon in March, having a rabbinical candidate at our sponsored Shabbat in April, a fashion show in May, and

February 3 and 4 were Sisterhood Shabbat in conjunction with our synagogue’s Kaplan Scholar-In-Residence annual program. Sisterhood members led the Friday night dinner blessings and the Saturday morning service. On Sunday, February 5, we had a bus tour of historic local Jewish sights which included a stop at one of our former synagogue buildings that we used until around 1964.

April 11 is our annual Torah Fund Luncheon that is held during Pesach. This widely attended (usually around 130) and popular event was begun in the late 40’s by one of our rebbitzin, of blessed memory. In order to be able to attend the luncheon everyone must make a donation to Torah Fund. At the luncheon, the year’s Past Presidents’ Leadership Development Award recipient is announced.

May 15 the year will conclude with a brunch celebrating

Gail Feldstein, President B’nai Amoona Sisterhood St Louis, MO

We continue to be busy here at B’nai Amoona. Sisterhood held Mahj 101 in the fall as a way to teach and give practice to Mah Jongg players at every level. Now, we have informal, weekly Mahj games on Wednesday afternoons. Everyone who’s interested comes and has a group for playing and schmoozing. Some people make a day of it—we have our weekly adult education class on Wednesday mornings with the Rabbi, discussing current events and how the Torah views these issues. A morning class, followed by a brown bag lunch, then Mahj—a great way to spend a day! Looking ahead to May, we’ll tour the Peabody Opera House, a historic theater which originally operated from 1934 to 1991, and recently reopened after a $90 million renovation. This stunning building will be a treat to see in detail, and of course, we’ll all have lunch together afterward! There’s a lot to do before May—Hamantschen to share with the preschoolers in their Purim parade, programs to enjoy, and always new members to welcome. B’nai Amoona Sisterhood really is a dynamic group of women!

Laurie Silverblatt, Co-President Frances Rubin, Co-President Brith Shalom Bellaire, TX

Dancing with the CBS Stars! It was an exciting night. On Saturday, January 14, at 8:00 p.m., Congregation Brith Shalom’s Sisterhood and Men’s Club presented their “Dancing with the CBS Stars” gala, a night of romance and elegance. This glamorous event at the synagogue was crowded with onlookers cheering for their favorite dancers.

Each dance couple danced the waltz and salsa, seeking to win the trophies for People’s Choice and Best Artistry/ Technique. Though it felt like Hollywood, it was really a fundraiser for the shul. All the major players were there;; Rabbi Ranon Teller and his wife, Vicki, (along with 7 other couples) danced in the competition, and Cantor Lance Rhodes and his wife, Dena, announced the winning couples.

Serving as judges for the event were three icons of the Houston community: Ellen Cohen, Houston City Council member, Ziggy Gruber, owner of Kenny & Ziggy’s Deli-catessen Restaurant and Sonia Jupiter, owner of Sonia’s World of Dance.

The Dance Committee was comprised of Chair: Doreen Lerner, Sisterhood V.P., Ways and Means, and Co-chairs: Frances Rubin (Sisterhood Co-president), Laurie Silverb-latt, (Sisterhood Co-president), Steve Rubin (Men’s Club President) and Scott Chanin (Men’s Club Chair).

Anita Barlow, President Emanuel Synagogue Oklahoma City, OK

This fall Emanuel’s Sisterhood of Oklahoma City incorpo-rated the Women’s League and the Torah Fund’s Hiddur Mitzvah theme, for an evening program and came up with A Jewish Antique Road Show. We gathered at the lovely home of one of our members, Julie Plotkin. Each woman was asked to bring a special Jewish ritual item, talk about its history and tell us how she uses it for Hiddur Mitzvah.

After sampling delicious hors d’oeuvres and desserts provided by Julie, the president talked about Hiddur Mitzva as our “experts” arranged the ritual objects according to categories: dreidles, chanukiahs, candle sticks, chal-lah covers, children’s Sunday School projects, etc. Then

the proceeds were sent to the Torah Fund. Next Helene started off the Jewish Antique Show with an old Torah crown she brought from the Synagogue. Each

woman followed showing off her special object and telling its poignant story.

In keeping with the Antique Road Show Theme, we had a panel of experts but they did not give appraisals. In an ef-fort to include as many women as possible, we try to have at least two evening programs each year.

Rochelle Litman, Co-President Estrid Mandel, Co-President Etz Chayim Winnipeg, MB

Women’s League of Congregation Etz Chayim’s program-ming for 2011-2012 has gotten off to a good start.

Our Opening Program on September 15, 2011, featured Graham Milliken of the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, who spoke to us on the issue of online/internet safety and online child sexual exploitation.

On November 20, we held our Torah Fund Brunch at which time we honoured Evelyn Numerow for her many years of leadership in Women’s League and support of Torah Fund Campaign.

Our Women’s Discussion Group Series in memory of Betty Elfenbaum began on January 15, 2012, with a review of the book “The Coffee Trader” facilitated by Maryann Rosen-bloom. Our February session will be held on February 12 at which time our guest speaker will be Rena Boroditsky from the Chesed Shel Emes Jewish Funeral Chapel who will speak to us on Jewish Traditions pertaining to Death and Burials. The March and April sessions will feature Chana Thau speaking to us on “Jewish Genealogy: Tracing Our Roots (Parts I & II)”.

again we got to take home our artistic creations to admire and enjoy. In our next sessions on Februry 7th & 21st Jane Reider and Maryann Rosenbloom will teach us how to design a mezzuzah and challah cover. We thank Jane and Maryann for sharing their talent and expertise with us.

Our sisterhood planned a Purim celebration, “Vashti’s Banquet” which took place on Sunday afternoon, Febru-ary 26. This exciting program featured belly dancing, henna tattoos, nail art, hand massages, crafts, shopping at various vendors, a book market, and of course Middle Eastern Music and Food. Attire for the occasion was “Harem Casual” -- caftans, harem pants, jeweled shirts and lots of jewelry. It

Judy Press, President Ohev Sholom Prairie Village, KS

Ohev Sholom Sisterhood had a very special guest at our November 13, 2011 program: President Harry Truman!

Yes, that’s right! Our program, entitled “A Safe Haven: Harry S. Truman and the Founding of Israel” partnered with Dr. Niel Johnson, a historian and Truman re-enactor associated with the Truman Presidential Library in nearby Independence, MO. Dressed as Harry Truman, and imitating his speech and mannerisms, it was easy to believe that President Truman was in the room with us.

Joining him was local community member, Loeb Granoff, whose father, A.J. Granoff together with Eddie Jacobson, made several visits to the White House to speak with Truman regarding Israel. Mr. Granoff read a letter from his father about the Truman visit. This letter is in the Truman Presidential Library.

presentation and commentary put together by our program co-chairs, Fran Kanter and Bev Levine. The venue was Village Shalom, the local Jewish continuing care community. About 100 people attended including Village Shalom residents, synagogue and community members. Refreshments were donated by Sisterhood members. This was a very unique and well-crafted program and every Sisterhood member in attendance was proud to be a part of it.

Micki Kingsley, President Shaare Zedek St Louis, MO

Thanks to mild weather at Sukkot, our traditional sisterhood dinner was held in the sukkah. Our chazzan, who accompanied herself on guitar, did a musical tribute to Debbie Friedman who had recently passed away. Dinner was very good and the program meaningful. At the end, the chazzan handed out music and we all joined her for the singing of Debbie Friedman’s mishaberach prayer. We usually get a crowd of about 45-50 women, some with children, and some with invited guests from other congregations.

Our Women’s League Shabbat was on January 21 and, other than the Torah reading and our obligatory Men’s Club representative with a Torah aliyah, the entire service was done by the ladies of Sisterhood, including the delicious Kiddush following the service.

Because of unforeseen problems in December, we re-scheduled our traditional Chanukah Paid-up Membership Brunch to Tu B’shevat with a program on fruits/trees/grains

of Israel and the Bible. Our Torah Fund brunch was at the end of February and featured not only a master chef, but a program by a well-known area chazzan called “Who Wrote the Songs that Make the Whole Shul Sing!” We will once again met our Torah Fund goal. Starting January 1 of this year, we have converted our kiddushes to “Green”, meaning that we are now using only biodegradable plates, cups, utensils, and napkins, and are collecting them in special containers during and after Kiddush and take them to a special center in St. Louis to be broken down with food leftovers into compost.

Louise Raber, President Shaarey Zedek Winnipeg, MB

This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Shaarey Zedek Sisterhood Interfaith Luncheon. Since 1963, we have had a variety of wonderful speakers who have been from our local Winnipeg community, well-known Canadians, and an international celebrity, Mitch Miller, authors, such as Pulitzer Prize winner, Carol Shields, and even an Indian Chief.

This event has always been very successful with more than 100 in attendance. The Sisterhood also invites clergy of different faiths as our guest. This year our guest speaker will be Brenlee Carriington Trepel who is a lawyer and human rights advocate.

We are celebrating our 50th on May 1. Our members are encouraged to come and bring a friend of another faith.

Temple of Aaron St Paul, MN Marcia Taple, President

Temple of Aaron Sisterhood in St. Paul, MN is a very ac-tive group of women coordinating many ongoing programs within the Temple and also in the local community.

In January, we held our annual Sisterhood Shabbat begin-ning with Friday night dinner. Then Sisterhood led Friday and Saturday Services. Judy Goldstein, the IntraContinen-tal Region President of Women’s League, was our Friday night speaker;; our Saturday Lunch & Learn topic was “Are We Still One People?”

In February, the St. Paul Israeli Shlicha (Emmissary), Roni Levin, gave a presentation on growing up and cooking in Israel. She shared a popular egg recipe called Shakshuka.

Our Gift Shop has a wide variety of Judaica items includ-ing items from Michael Aram, Gary Rosenthal and Tamara Baskin. The Gift Shop also provides a Bar/Bat Mitzvah & Bridal registry, gift wrapping and offers gift cards.

Ongoing Temple of Aaron Sisterhood activities include: Book Club, Women’s Shelter Donations, Food Shelf Col-lections, Building Fund Cards, Knitting Club, baking for Selichot, Rosh Hashanah Greeting Fundraiser, Hamantash-en baking and sponsoring our weekly Onegs. Upcoming Events: March – Laughter Yoga;; May – Women’s Fashion Show presenting Karma and Cabi clothing. Temple of Aaron’s Sisterhood has a full calendar of exciting events.

Amy Cook-Porter, President Temple Shalom Colorado Springs, CO

From Vashti & Esther to Jochebed and Miriam, the Women of Temple Shalom have scheduled a month of activities to honor the stories of the women who have gone before us;; and to write the stories of the women who have not yet come.

Our activities began with a Vashti & Esther luncheon that preceded our Sisterhood Shabbot on March 9 and 10. At each event, we asked the question, “What role do you play in our Sisterhood? Are you a Vashti, Esther, Jochebed, or Miriam?”

Our Sisterhood Seder will be April 2. It will once again give us an opportunity to retell our story – that of the women of the Exodus, Miriam, Jochebed and Zipporah as well as the tales of contemporary women who too are in exile.

Later in April, we will host a Sisterhood Night @ the Improv with the proceeds going toward renovating our milk kitchen.

will have planned.

Lora Lee Spiro Presidential Committee Chair Tifereth Israel, Des Moines, IA

One of our most successful events was an elegant High Tea honoring a beloved member of our Women’s League as “Woman Of The Year”. She is a valued member who has run our Gift Shop for more than 20 years.

We presented a program that told her life story through narration and musical parodies of popular songs. The event was extremely well attended and everyone enjoyed the afternoon very much.

Song parodies were done to the music of: “Can You Feel The Love Tonight?” (“Can You Feel The Love Today?”) “You Were Meant For Me” (“He was Meant For Her”) “Sunrise, Sunset” “You Needed Me” (“We Needed Her”) “You’ve Got A Friend” (“We’ve Got A Friend”)

We also had a Tribute Book printed honoring our “Woman

with special messages of love to our honoree. The funds raised from this book were contributed towards construction costs for the new Gift Shop in our Synagogue.
