ISLAMIC COLLEGE OF MELBOURNE TERM 4 ISSUE 1 31.10.2018 PRINCIPALS MESSAGE Assalamualaikum Warahmatullah Wabarakatuh Dear Parents and students, With Term 4 now upon us, the end of 2018 is quickly approaching. It is just as productive as the previous three terms. In term 4, as the year comes to a close, staff will continue to ensure that the students are ready for the next year level, insha’Allah. As always, attendance is an extreme- ly important topic to the college and we strongly recommend and expect parents to have their students attend all days of school. With parents wishing to take students on holiday at the end of the year, we encourage parents to book these holidays after the year ends, so that students do not miss on any learning especially if the students will miss out on the Secondary Transition Week and Orientation Day. Two important events that prepare students for 2019 by keeping them informed of any changes for the new year. The college is and will keep taking action against repetitive unjustified absenc- es and ask parents to contact the college for reasons behind absences. The college uploads all relevant policies for parents on the Parent Portal. The Portal provides important information regarding the college, includ- ing key dates, school fees and updated policies and procedures. Please ensure you are logging into the portal to be aware of any changes or updates to the college’s procedures. On the topic of end of year events, I would like to congratulate the Year 12 students on completing their formal schooling this term. This week, students will commence their Year 12 exams and proceed to being responsible individuals who will insha’Allah achieve great things in the future. Please make du’a for our first ICOM Year 12 Graduates and insha’Al- lah they achieve outstanding results. With the warm weather upon us and being Term 4, we can see the students in their summer uniform again. I would like to thank all parents for assisting their children to abide by the school rules, which also includes wearing the correct school uniform every day. On a similar note, the college would like to remind parents that the college school bag will be compulsory for all students from the beginning of 2019. The uniform shop has informed us that they currently have stock of the bags and I urge all parents to start purchasing uniform items required early for next year. This will ensure you are ready for the new year. On Tuesday, 11 September & Wednesday, 12 September, the college organised information session for parents whose children have been accepted to the college in 2019. The session included an introduction from the College Principal and further information including preparing your child for the first day of school, daily school practices, policies, procedures and the curriculum. This was an important session for the parents where they not only learnt about what will happen at the college next year, but also had the opportunity to ask any questions they had about the college and any improvements that need to be achieved for the best interest of your children. The Pioneer Graduates of ICOM, embarked upon a roll coaster journey of what is Year 12. For many in the group it was a navigation to nd their way, strengths and shine whereas others preferred to remain shy and quiet observers.

In the end it was truly a journey of self-discovery and growth for each and every individual. My message to you all is to be proud of what you have achieved. Explore your options, an ATAR is important but it does not dene you and what you are capable of– do what you enjoy, are good at and never let go of your Islamic Identity.

ISLAMIC COLLEGE OF MELBOURNE TERM 3 ISSUE 6 18.9.2018

I cannot believe it’s nally come to an end!I could say 2018 was an amazing year however, I would not be telling the truth as the word amazing cannot express or dene what we have been through as the rst pioneer year 12 students of ICOM. We denitely had some ups and downs. We were over-whelmed with high expectations that were placed upon us, but we also enjoyed being part of the “minor” competitions we had amongst ourselves (because I was going to rank 1). However our most memorable moments came from the times we spent together in and out of school from excursions with the amazing teacher & Coordinator Ms.Maha, to being in the classroom where we could just look at each other and burst into laughter.I honestly could say, that the 2018 ICOM YEAR 12 batch are more than just friends, but family. Throughout this journey they have surely been there for me and for each other. In my opinion, it is the one thing that really separates us from any other Year 12 cohort. We were together through thick and thin, no matter what storms arose or how bad of a day you were having. Someone was always there to make you smile and laugh, and although we made it to the end, I can tell you for sure that this is only the beginning, and the world better WATCH OUT, because were coming in strong, and we’re not holding back!To the rst Year 12 class of 2018, broth-ers, sisters, and teachers, thank you all for making 2018 an amazing year!

ICOM Library News

Read . Learn . ConnectThe primary library lessons (Foundation to Year 6) have continued for Term 4. Some classes have expe-rienced reading in the beautiful sun outside the ICOM Library. We are all so proud of the fantastic reading improvements that have occurred. We would like to thank our wonderful parents for their hard work at home to keep up with the students’ reading every day. A friendly reminder to please make sure students are bringing their library bags to borrow books. If they have lost it, an environmental bag is okay to protect the books. From Years 5 and up they must also bring their library cards to borrow.

With Term 3 drawn to an end what better way to embrace Footy Fever than with our annual Footy Day at ICOM?Our student's true colours were on display for all to see on the last day of Term 3 with Footy Jumper Day.

Primary students took part in a handball competition at lunchtime while our Secondary students showed o their skills with a goal kicking contest with Mr Karas and Mr Salih!

Students were also able to embrace iconic Aussie Footy culture by having a Pie or Sausage Roll for lunch and getting their faces painted.

Ms Sahin ran a spectacular integrated maths activity for our Year 3’s where students took part in a water run and kickball session and had to measure volume and distance. What a fantastic way to combine PE into a Numeracy Session! Thank you to Ms Sahin and the Year 3 Team.

Primary Activities

Year 2 IncursionsDuring Term 4, the students in Year 2 have been learning about simple machines and the forces used to move them. Students have been particularly looking at the push and pull forces. On the 16 and 17 October, 2018 the Year 2 students participated in an incursion where they were able to use a variety of tools to build their own mini billy cart. It was an enjoyable day and the students did a fantastic job! Ms Maria Kyriopoulos Year 2 Team Leader

YEAR 5 SWIMMING EXCURSIONS

This term, our Year 5 students thoroughly enjoyed this year's swimming program during week 2. The boys and girls, in their small groups took up every opportunity and challenge, enjoying the ability to learn new skills and continue to practice what they already knew. All of the students who participated showed wonderful improvements. We look forward to next year !

Ms Nathalie McConnellYear 5C Teacher

Year 2 Zoo ExcursionsYear 2s went on an excursion to the Werribee Open Range Zoo during Week one of Term 4. It was a great oppor-tunity as students got to experience the natural habitat of animals up close. The students were able to come in a close encounter with animals like Wallabies, Rhinos, Hippos, Bandicoots, Giraes and Lions. The highlight of the excursion was the safari bus, as students were able to experience the animals outside their enclosures. It allowed students to observe natural movements and habits of wild animals. Overall, environmental literacy and animal encounters helped educate students to develop an emotional connection and care about endan-gered animals. It was a day lled with knowledge and entertainment. Ms Maria Kyriopoulos Year 2 Team Leader

This notice is from the Australian Government Department of Educa-tion and Training (the department), to advise you that the department has requested that your child’s school provide a statement of addresses, in accordance with the Australian Education Regulation 2013 (Cth) (the Regulation). A statement of addresses contains the following information about each student at the school:

• Student residential address (not student names)

• Student boarding school status (i.e. whether the student is board-ing or a day student)

• Names and residential addresses of the student’s parent(s) and/or guardian(s)

Schools generate a record number for each student for the purposes of this collection, which is also provided to the department.

Purpose of the collection

This collection is routinely used to inform Commonwealth school education policy, and to help ensure that Commonwealth funding arrangements for non-gov-ernment schools are based on need, and are fair and transparent. The National School Resourcing Board recently completed a review of the socio-economic status (SES) score methodology used in the calculation of the Commonwealth’s needs-based funding arrange-ments for non-government schools.

The information collected in the statement of addresses will be used to progress the Board’s recommenda-tions, which have been accepted by the Government.

Further information on this review and the Government’s response can be found here: https://www.educa-tion.gov.au/review-socio-econom-ic-status-ses-score-methodology.

Your personal information is protect-ed by law, including the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth). Any use and disclosure of your personal information relating to the statement of addresses will occur in accordance with the Regulation. Your personal information may be used by the department, or disclosed to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (the ABS), for the purposes of SES score policy development, reviewing SES score methodology, calculating SES scores, Commonwealth school education policy development (including school funding), or where it is otherwise required or authorised by law.

AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM ADMIN

Helpful

Tips

I would like to start by thanking the parents, students and sta who are now following the pedestrian safety rules around the school and crossing the road at the pedestrian crossings available. Research shows that young children do not have the skills and experience to be safe in trac on their own. Parents and carers need to take special care and supervise young children in trac.

Further to pedestrian safety, parents, guardians and carers are reminded that a speed of 40km/h applies on Buttery Boulevard. On Wootten Road, time-based school zones operate between 8–9.30am and 2.30–4pm on weekdays during Victoria’s school terms (except for public holidays).

Reduced-speed areas that operate near schools are designed to keep students (your children) safe by lowering the speed limit around the school, especial-ly when children are travelling to and from school. There has been a number of parents, carers & visitors enter the parent carpark through the “Exit Only” gate near the Administration Building. The sta have seen a number of near misses. Please ensure you enter the parent carpark via the entrance next to the assembly area only.

Lastly, parents, guardians and carers are to be consid-erate of others, meaning they should not double park, park on the crossing next to the Administration Oce, no U-turns on Buttery Boulevard and look out for students crossing the road.
