Participatory Design of Interactive TV User Interface for Elderly People in Indonesia

Abstract—The aging process certainly brings impacts on various aspects of elderly people's life, including social, economic, and health. Basically, elderly people usually spend most of their time staying at home and watching television. The development of interactive television can not be easily accepted by elderly people because of various reasons. This study focuses in designing an interactive television user interface for elderly people in Indonesia. Participatory design was used as an approach in this study. This study involved six elderly people as dedicated participants throughout the design process and who were selected based on several criteria including live independently, familiar with using television, and frequently communicate with their family or relatives. Low-fidelity prototypes (a wizard-of-oz prototype and a mock up prototype) were built based on the selected concept. The prototype evaluation has informed some suggestions to further improve the design since there were users who still experienced difficulties in using the user interface.

I. INTRODUCTION The proportion of elderly population which has reached
over seven percent, indicates that Indonesia has begun to enter the aging population. The increasing number of elderly people indicates that life expectancy in Indonesia is higher from year to year. Naturally, every human being will experience the aging process. The aging process can be slowed by stimulating the brain through a group activity for the elderly. Actively participating in social activities and interaction with others is known to help stimulate cognitive functions and slow the occurence of dementia. The access to the mass media also has an effect on it. According to the national statistical center of Indonesia, the activities of accessing mass media that most elderly do is watching television (79.83 %) and listening to radio (16.72 %).
Television is one of the most influential media in the life of Indonesian people, especially for the elderly. The development of interactive television combined with the internet technology makes the access to the mass media easier. The users can be more entertained with more interactive television and equipped with various features which can support the daily activities, especially for users who live independently. Elderly people living independently sometimes has a particular concern or
need, for example a study shows an idea to design a caring system for the elderly who choose to live independently at home [1]. The caring system consists of a videophone applied to the television, which is used to evaluate the physical and psychological health of the elderly. However, the elderly people have difficulties in keeping up with the development of the technology, especially the elderly people in Indonesia. Limited skills and the decrease of cognitive functions can be barriers for the elderly. Therefore, this paper describes a study to design an interactive TV user interface for elderly people in Indonesia.
II. METHODS Participatory design is the antithesis of traditional design, in
which designers exhibit their own expertise [2]. The key attribute of participatory design is the involvement of end users in the design process, from defining user requirements to conducting prototype trials [3].
The design process was guided by the interaction design lifecycle model [4]. Figure 1 shows the interaction design lifecycle model, which involves four phases: establishing requirements, designing alternatives, prototyping, and evaluating.

III. DESIGN PROCESS
A. User requirements To establish the user requirements of an interactive TV user
interface for elderly people, we conducted interviews with six Indonesian elderly as dedicated participants throughout the design process. They were five females and 1 male with the age range from 62 to 70 years old and were selected based on criteria such as live independently, familiar with using television, and frequently communicate with their family or relatives.
Eighteen requirements were identified and rated by the elderly. Table I shows the identified user requirements of a interactive TV user interface for elderly people in Indonesia.

After establishing user requirements, a persona, scenario and a storyboard were developed to guide the design process further and also give insights about the user group characterictics.
B. Generating design concepts The design process was continued to the process of
designing alternatives. Figure 2 describes the situation of the design workshop followed by four students. The students were
undergraduate students in their last year of their study and had background and experience in interaction design courses.

First, the persona and scenario were introduced to the students participating as designers in the workshop. Then, the user requirements were also revealed to the students. Afterwards, each student was asked to sketch the user interface as a design concept.
Four alternatives of design concepts were resulted in the design workshop. To select one final design concept, participants were asked to rank each other design. Concept 2 was selected as the final design concept based on the highest total rank score.
C. Prototyping The selected design concept was further refined and
developed into a low-fidelity prototype, as depicted in Figure 3 and Figure 4. The low-fidelity prototypes of the interactive TV user interface for elderly are the followings: a wizard-of-oz prototype to show the interfaces in television (Figure 3) and a mockup prototype to show the physical of the TV remote (Figure 4).

D. Prototype Workshop After creating the initial prototypes of the interactive
television user interface, a prototype workshop was conducted to introduce the prototype to the elderly. At this phase, in addition to presenting a demo of an early prototype, the participants also contributed to the completion of the prototype.
As shown in Figure 5, a prototype workshop was conducted with five Indonesian elderly people who live independently at their home with or without their partner.

From the prototype workshop, we obtained some feedback from the elderly to further improve the prototypes, as follows:
• Adding information to the schedules list and icons on the initial menus.
• Changing interfaces background.
• Adding information to the ‘TV’ menus.
• Improving the icon emoticons in messages notification to ‘kirim’ buttons.
• Adding colors background on the ‘CCTV’ menus.
• Adding color background and informations on the ‘Lagu’ menus.
• Adding background color to shows mark options in the ‘Lainnya’ menus.
E. Evaluating To evaluate the prototype, we carried out usability testing
with six Indonesian elderly. We asked the participants to perform five task scenarios with the help of the prototype. The task scenarios include the task of: (1) select a television program, (2) play a song, (3) watch the house through cctv, (4) add details of an activity schedule, and (5) make a video call.
Quantitative measures and qualitative measures were collected to gain user feedback and find out whether or not the built prototypes already meet the user requirements. Table II shows the results of these quantitative and qualitative measures with regard to the user’s performance (i.e. number of error and types of errors).

We also asked the participants to rate their subjective preference on several statements (on a scale 1 to 5, 1 fully disagree and 5 fully agree) regarding the prototype of television interface. Table III shows the subjective preference results obtained from the questionnaires given to the participants.
The analysis of the evaluation results showed that the interactive TV user interface prototype still needs some improvement such as adding labels in the schedule feature, adding signs and changing the information in the menu ‘TV’.

IV. CONCLUSION In this study, we have designed an interactive TV user
interface for elderly people in Indonesia through the participatory design approach. Four phases of the interaction design lifecycle model have been conducted with the help of six Indonesian elderly people who live independently, familiar with using television, and still communicate with their family or relatives.
The prototype evaluation with the help of the low-fidelity prototypes, i.e wizard-of-oz prototype for the TV interface and mockup prototype for the TV remote, has informed some suggestions of improvement. Further design improvements are necessary since there were still users who experienced difficulties in using the interactive TV user interface.
