Welcome to the first ICMM publications guide. This guide has been published to give ourstakeholders and the wider community a convenient overview of our work programs and

the resources we produce.

We work in partnership with other organizations on many of our projects to enhance theperformance of our members and the industry as a whole. The majority of our publicationsand other resources have been produced in conjunction with other organizations.

All our resources are free and many are available in different languages. Publications can beviewed and downloaded from our website and we have provided a url reference for eachpublication. We have also provided an order number where printed copies are available.

We hope you find this guide useful in identifying materials that are of interest as well asproviding a convenient at-a-glance overview of ICMMs work. This guide will be updated asour work programs evolve and more materials are produced.

RESOURCE ENDOWMENT INITIATIVEThe challenge of mineral wealth: using resource endowments to foster

sustainable development

The Resource Endowment initiative began in May 2004 in partnership withUNCTAD and the World Bank Group. It aims to help governments, companies andlocal communities, development assistance agencies and the voluntary sectorwork together so that mining benefits all citizens.

The project has been carried out in three distinct phases:

Phase 1: Analytical framework and tools (May 2004 December 2004)The first phase of the initiative concentrated on developing a practical toolkit toassess local, regional and national socio-economic impacts of mining. This wasbased on an extensive analysis of the performance of 33 mineral dependantcountries across a range of socio-economic indicators and research into existingliterature on the subject.

Phase 2: Testing, synthesis & emerging lessons (January 2005 December 2006)The Resource Endowment Toolkit was applied to two main and two comparatorcountries, Peru (with Chile as comparator) and Ghana (with Tanzania as acomparator). The purpose was to test out the Toolkit in the field, to assess whetherit could be applied to a broader set of mining countries, and to proposerefinements.

04 RESOURCE ENDOWMENT INITIATIVE

Phase 3: Action learning through partnerships (January 2007 onwards)

The third phase of the initiative is now underway.

Following government approval of the four case studies undertaken in phase 2,a pilot study is currently being undertaken in Peru, which aims to develop localpartnerships in order to encourage the uptake of recommendations emergingfrom the project to date. Two further pilot studies are planned anddissemination workshops will be held in Chile and Ghana to provide feedbackto those who participated in the phase 2 country work.

Running in parallel with dissemination activities and pilot projects is theproduction of a mineral taxation report which will be incorporated into therelevant section of the Resource Endowment Toolkit.

The Minerals Industry Risk Management Gateway (MIRMgate)presents health and safety risk management informationrelevant to the mining industry. It allows users to findcarefully-chosen good practice risk management information,identify hazards through the entire life cycle of operations andget decision-making help for both long- and short-termproblems.

ICMM provides funding to enable international data to beadded to the extensive library that has been compiled byAustralias University of Queensland Minerals Industry Safetyand Health Centre.

The Community DevelopmentToolkit was published inNovember 2005 in partnershipwith the World Bank, and withfunding support from EnergySector Management AssistanceProgramme (ESMAP).

It was developed to supportgovernment, industry, andcommunity efforts to realizemore sustainable communitydevelopment around mining andmineral processing operations.

The Toolkit contains 17 practical

The Metals Environmental RiskAssessment Guidance (MERAG) publicationpresents a set of the most advanced andappropriate scientific concepts forassessing the risk posed by the presenceof metals and inorganic metal compoundsin the environment.

Our environmental stewardship work program is aimed atcontinually enhancing the industry's environmentalperformance. Because of the nature of the mining andminerals industry, much of its work is carried out in partsof the world which boast rich natural resources and areoften environmentally sensitive.

ICMM members contribute to the conservation ofbiodiversity and integrated approaches to land useplanning as well as respect legally designated protectedareas. We recognize the need to work effectively withgovernments, organizations and local communities inorder to make sure that environmental behaviour does not

restrict future access to minerals and metals.
